Brag Dog and Other Stories -- The Best of Vereen Bell Book
Limited hardcover edition complete with slipcase
Copyright 2000, 244 pages, hardcover with slipcase, black and white photos and illustrations, Limited Edition
Vereen Bell was a promising young author with three books and dozens of articles to his credit when he was killed in the Second Battle of the Philippines in World War II at the age of 33. Had he lived, he undoubtedly would have been discussed in the same breath with sporting writers such as Rutledge and Babcock. His best stories were about bird dogs and quail hunting, and many appeared in the leading magazines of the day, such as the Saturday Evening Post and Collier's.
The title story of this collection, Brag Dog, has been included in several anthologies of the best dog stories in the last 50 years. This edition also includes his wonderful novella, Two of a Kind, about an emerging dog trainer on the field trial circuit in the 1930s, and a host of short stories about dogs, quail hunting, and adventures afield. Many of these stories have never been in book form before and offer some excellent reading. His writing is one of the true hidden gems left in sporting writing.
This special limited edition is slipcased and bound in fine cloth, and features the etchings and dry-points of Marguerite Kirmse, one of the most famous dog illustrators of the century. Edited by Darren Brown.
