What kind of warranty do they have?

Dog Training Collars Warranty Guide

All of the remote dog training collars that we sell come with a 30 day money back guarantee. Gun Dog Supply covers this period of the product. If you have a problem inside the first 30 days contact us, and we will get it straightened out.

After the first 30 days the manufacturer's warranty picks up. Comparing warranties from one company to another can be tricky.

Tri-Tronics and SportDOG have very simple warranties that last for a set period of time (one to two years depending on the product). After that period is over, if your system needs out of warranty service it can be repaired for a fee.

DT Systems and Dogtra have a "Lifetime" warranty on many of their products. These products are completely covered (parts and labor) during the first year or two. After that, you will have parts covered, but not labor.

Innotek products have a one year parts and labor warranty but they require a service fee with warranty repair in the first year (costs are dependent on the processing time and the desired shipping options).

Many Innotek products have a "Limited Lifetime Warranty." After one year from date of original retail purchase, they will repair, replace or upgrade your product at a fixed rate based on the component.

To me the "Lifetime" concept isn't that different from what Tri-Tronics and SportDOG offer since you will be paying something for the service. The difference is in how much you are going to pay.

Tri-Tronics Repair Charges:

These prices are for the repair of the individual items in G2 EXP and G3 systems. For instance, if you have a Classic 70 G3 EXP with one collar and both the transmitter and the receiver need repair then the charge would be $100.00+$75.00 for a total of $175.00. Tritronics no longer services pre-G2 units.

SportDOG doesn't list their service prices on their website but as of 2013 the average price per component out of warranty is $50.

Which type of warranty is better?

Well, that depends on how you look at it. Repair prices will increase over the lifetime of your unit, but wholesale costs and service fees will also go up. Repairing electronic components will always be expensive and if you plan on using your unit for many years (5 to 10 years) you should plan on having to spend some money on it in the future no matter which warranty you go with.

Also keep in mind that electronics will improve over time. If you have an older system that needs repair, you may be better to purchase newer technology for a few more dollars.

I look at warranties as a way to protect the consumer from faulty products and manufacturer defects (both uncommon problems in the remote collar industry)

We recommend that you register your collar with the manufacturer at the time of purchase. Some systems include warranty cards or you have the option of registering online at the respective company's website. Some of the warranty protections (such as the DT Systems "Lifetime" warranty) require that the product be registered within 30 days of purchase.

The following information was copied from the respective manufacturers websites in 2013. We will update this information as warranty coverage will change from time to time. If you have questions on warranty comparisons we recommend that you check the company websites or call them directly at the numbers provided.

We have also removed warranty information about products that are no longer made by these companies to save space. If you have questions about older units, give us a call or check with the respective company.

Most warranty situations will require you to ship the unit to the manufacturer for repair or replacement. We recommend that you ship your collar via a carrier with tracking ability (UPS, FedEx, etc.) and that you insure your collar for replacement value.

LIMITED WARRANTY:

Tri-Tronics warrants its products, when subject to normal and proper use, to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for either 1 or 2 years (varies by product, see list below) from the date of purchase from Tri-Tronics or one of its authorized dealers. Within these periods, Tri-Tronics will, at its sole option, repair or replace, at no charge, any components or rechargeable batteries that fail in normal use during the warranty period with new or reconditioned components. The warranty is void if the product has been altered or if unauthorized service has been performed on such product. The warranty does not cover physical damage or abuse to the product.

This warranty does not apply to: (i) cosmetic damage, such as scratches, nicks and dents; (ii) consumable parts, such as common replaceable batteries, unless product damage has occurred due to a defect in materials or workmanship; (iii) damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, water, flood, fire, or other acts of nature or external causes; (iv) damage caused by service performed by anyone who is not an authorized service provider of Tri-Tronics; or (v) damage to a product that has been modified or altered without the written permission of Tri-Tronics. In addition, Tri-Tronics reserves the right to refuse warranty claims against products or services that are obtained and/or used in contravention of the laws of any country.

The warranty is transferable to a new owner. Proof of purchase may be required to obtain warranty service. The customer, at its sole cost, shall be responsible for shipping the product to Tri-Tronics. Tri-Tronics, at its sole cost (in the US and Canada only), shall be responsible for shipping the product back to the customer after it is repaired. All repair work done by Tri-Tronics on its products, under warranty or not, is warranted for 180 days from completion of such work except Beeper, Tracer light, & Bark Limiter which are 90 days. If the unit sent in for repair is still under its original warranty, then the new warranty is 180 days (90 days for Beeper, Tracer light, & Bark Limiter) or to the end of the original warranty, depending upon which is longer.

Always contact our Customer Service Department to obtain a return authorization number before sending in your product for repair or return.

Products covered by a 2 year limited warranty: all Sport, Field and Pro Series products; all Pro Control transmitters and receivers; all EXP additional receivers; and NIGHTRAZOR.

Products covered by a 1 year limited warranty: all Bark Limiter products; all Beeper products; and all Tracer products. THE WARRANTIES AND REMEDIES CONTAINED HEREIN ARE EXCLUSIVE AND IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING ANY LIABILITY ARISING UNDER ANY WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, STATUTORY OR OTHERWISE. THIS WARRANTY GIVES YOU SPECIFIC LEGAL RIGHTS, WHICH MAY VARY FROM STATE TO STATE.

IN NO EVENT SHALL TRI-TRONICS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, INDIRECT, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, WHETHER RESULTING FROM THE USE, MISUSE, OR INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT OR FROM DEFECTS IN THE PRODUCT. Some states do not allow the exclusion of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations may not apply to you.

Tri-Tronics retains the exclusive right to repair or replace (with a new or newly-overhauled replacement product) the device at its sole discretion. SUCH REMEDY SHALL BE YOUR SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY FOR ANY BREACH OF WARRANTY.

ONE YEAR NON-TRANSFERABLE LIMITED WARRANTY

WHAT IS COVERED: Radio Systems Corporation, owner of the PetSafe Brand, (hereinafter referred to as "PetSafe") warrants to the original retail consumer purchaser, and not any other purchaser or subsequent owner, that its PetSafe product, when subject to normal and proper residential use, will be free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of one (1) year from the purchase date. An "original retail consumer purchaser" is a person or entity who originally purchases the product, or a gift recipient of a new product that is unopened and in its original packaging. When serviced by PetSafe Customer Service, PetSafe covers labor and parts for the first year of ownership; after the first year, a service or upgrade charge will apply relative to replacement of the product, with new or refurbished items at PetSafe's sole discretion. The limited warranty is non-transferable and shall automatically terminate if the original retail consumer purchaser resells the PetSafe product or transfers the property on which the PetSafe product is installed. DISCLAIMERS: Replacement as provided under this non-transferable limited warranty is the exclusive remedy of the consumer. Neither labor to remove the part nor labor to install the refurbished or replaced part is covered.

This non-transferable limited warranty is in lieu of all other express warranties. PetSafe expressly disclaims and excludes all other warranties, express or implied, including without limitation, the warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. PetSafe also disclaims and excludes all liability for incidental, consequential, punitive, direct, indirect, special or any other damages arising out of or connected with the purchase, use or misuse of this product or for the breach of any express or implied warranties or breach of contract or otherwise. GOVERNING LAW: This non-transferable limited warranty shall be governed by the law of the State of Tennessee, U.S.A., and by the laws of the United States of America, excluding their conflicts of laws principles. Furthermore, the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods is hereby excluded in its entirety from application to this non-transferable limited warranty. Jurisdiction and venue shall be exclusive to the courts of Knox County, Tennessee.

These warranties give you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights that vary from state to state or country to country. Some states or countries do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you.

To Qualify for the Dogtra Warranty

All products must be registered and/or a proof of purchase is required to initiate repair work under warranty. To register your Dogtra product, log onto our website at www.dogtra.com, click on the warranty registration link, and fill out the required information. Registration must be completed within 30 days of purchase. If you do not have access to a computer, you can call our toll free number at 1-888-811-9111, and one of our customer service representatives will register the product for you. If you were unable to register your product within 30 days of purchase, we will accept all products for repair with a proof of purchase. We strongly recommend keeping the original receipt. If your product is not registered and a proof of purchase is not available at the time of service, Dogtra will estimate the age of the unit by the serial number. Serial number estimates can differ from the actual purchase date. A serial number estimate is the only method of determining an approximate date of purchase without product registration or a proof of purchase.

Platinum Limited Lifetime Warranty

Dogtra Company provides the original purchaser with a comprehensive Platinum 2-YEAR WARRANTY for the EDGE. The warranty begins from the date of purchase. For the first two years, coverage is for Parts, Labor, Accessories, and Outbound Shipping. After the first two years, the Limited Lifetime Warranty covers Parts only. The Limited Lifetime Warranty does not cover Labor Fees and Accessories such as chargers, splitter cables, antennas, straps, and batteries. The cost of Accessories, Labor fees, and Shipping fees incurred are the customers responsibility. Labor fees will be variable depending on the extent of the work required. The Limited Lifetime Warranty expires 5 years after a model is discontinued from production by Dogtra.

2-Year Limited Lifetime Warranty

Dogtra Company provides the original purchaser with a 2-YEAR WARRANTY for the 175NCP, 180NCP, 200NCP Gold Series, 210NCP Series, 280NCP Series, 300M Series, 1400NCP Series, 1500NCP Series, 1600NCP Series, 1700NCP Series, 1800NC Series, 1900NCP Series, 2000T&B Series, 2200NCP Series, 2300NCP Series, 2500T&B Series, 3500NCP Series, and the SureStim Series. The warranty begins from the date of purchase. For the first two years, coverage is for both Parts and Labor on warranty repair services.

Accessories such as chargers, splitter cables, antennas, straps, and batteries are covered for the first year only. After the first two years, the Limited Lifetime Warranty covers Parts only and does not cover Labor Fees and Accessories. All Shipping fees incurred, the cost of Accessories after the first year, and Labor fees associated with out of warranty repair work, are the customers responsibility. Labor fees will be variable depending on the extent of the work required. The Limited Lifetime Warranty expires 5 years after a model is discontinued from production by Dogtra.

1-Year Comprehensive Warranty

Dogtra Company provides the original purchaser with a 1-YEAR WARRANTY for the iQ series, EF 3000 Gold, RR Deluxe, YS300, and YS500. The warranty begins from the date of purchase. For the first year, coverage is for Parts, Labor, and Accessories. After the first year, the cost of Parts, Accessories, Labor fees, and Shipping fees incurred are the customers responsibility. Labor fees will be variable depending on the extent of the work required.

Not Covered under the Dogtra Warranty

Dogtra DOES NOT offer warranty for products that have been bought secondhand or as a resold product. Dogtra DOES NOT replace defective units or provide refunds for products purchased from us after 30 days from the date of purchase.

Dogtra DOES NOT cover the cost of shipping outside of the Continental United States. Issues of replacement and refunds on units purchased less than 30 days from an authorized dealer must be addressed to the dealer directly. If the products purchased from an authorized dealer are after 30 days from the date of purchase, please send the units to Dogtra for service and repair.

Dogtra DOES NOT cover the cost of repairs and replacements due to misuse by the owner or dog, improper maintenance, and/or lost units. Any water damage on the Water Resistant Transmitters of the 175NCP, 180NCP, 200NCP series, 1400NCP Series, 1500NCP Series, and iQ Remote Trainer, and the Water Resistant Receivers of the RRS, RRD, and RR Deluxe, will not be covered. All replacement costs for either the transmitter or receiver will be the owner's responsibility.

The warranty is void if the unit has been altered or an unauthorized person has damaged the unit while attempting repair work.

Battery replacement by the customer during the first two years of the Platinum Limited Lifetime Warranty, and the first year of the 2-Year Limited Lifetime Warranty and 1-Year Comprehensive Warranty, is not recommended. If the customer chooses to replace the batteries, any damage to the unit during the change-out by the owner will void the warranty.

The removal of serial numbers from any Dogtra products will void the warranty.

Dogtra reserves the right to retain and discard any parts or accessories that have been found damaged upon replacement and repair.

One Year Warranty

D.T. Systems manufactures products designed and built to last, and we stand behind our workmanship. All D.T. products come with a full one year warranty from the date of purchase. This warranty covers any manufacturer's defects not caused by misuse, abuse, or normal wear and tear. Simply send in your defective unit and D.T. Systems will repair or replace it at no charge (please see below for further details).

What is covered:

D.T. Systems One Year Warranty covers all parts to be free from manufacturing defects for as long as the unit is held by the original owner. Labor on all repairs will be covered. Return ground shipping (inside the continental United States) to the customer is covered.

What is not covered:

Lost parts or parts that malfunction due to misuse, abuse, improper maintenance, or incorrect handling are not covered. D.T. Systems has the right to determine what is and is not a warranty issue. Damage from dogs chewing or wear and tear from excessive field use is not covered. Our warranty does not cover the cost of shipping the unit to our repair center. Expedited or special return shipping is not covered, but available by request for an extra shipping fee. International shipping charges are not covered.

Limited Lifetime Warranty on Parts

In addition to the one year warranty, some products are also covered by the D.T. Systems Premium Limited Lifetime Warranty. This warranty is the best warranty offered in the industry and is free to participating U.S. customers (a completed warranty registration card accompanied with a copy of your receipt must be returned within 30 days of original purchase). This changes our normal one year parts and labor warranty to a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects on parts and a one year warranty on labor. Please see below for further details on the Limited Lifetime Warranty.

How the Limited Lifetime Warranty works:

To qualify for the Warranty, you must fill out the warranty registration card which came with your system and mail it (with a copy of your sales receipt) to D.T. Systems within 30 days of purchase. Your unit must be sent to D.T. Systems for all warranty issues. D.T. Systems has the right to determine what is and is not a warranty issue. There is no charge for parts or labor for the first year on any of our lifetime warranty products. When the product's one year labor warranty expires after the first year, there will be a normal labor charge for any repair under the lifetime warranty program should your system be in need of service. Labor charges will vary depending on: 1) the system model and 2) the severity of the repair needed. When your unit is sent in for repairs, any defective part(s) that need replacement will be free during the lifetime warranty period.

What is covered:

D.T. Systems Premium Lifetime Warranty covers all parts (except batteries) to be free from manufacturing defects for as long as the unit is held by the original owner. Return ground shipping (inside the continental United States) to the customer is covered.

What is not covered:

SportHunter SD-825, SD-1225, and SD-1825, ProHunter SD-2525, HoundHunter SD-3225, UplandHunter SD-1875, WetlandHunter SD-1825CAMO, Tek Series, and SDF-100A In-Ground Fence systems as well as SDR-A, SDR-AW, SDR-AH and SDR-AB Add-A-Dog receiver collars and SD-BEEP beepers have a Warranty Period of two (2) years from the date of purchase.

Sit Means Sit remote trainer systems and Sit Means Sit additional receiver collars have a Warranty Period defined as the lifetime of the product plus two (2) years from the announcement of the discontinuance of product manufacture, provided that batteries have a warranty limited to one (1) year from the date of purchase.

Lion Country Supply Bird Dog Trainer 800 remote trainer systems have a Warranty Period of two (2) years from the date of purchase.

GOVERNING LAW: This non-transferable limited warranty shall be governed by the law of the State of Tennessee, U.S.A., and by the laws of the United States of America, excluding their conflicts of laws principles. Furthermore, the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods is hereby excluded in its entirety from application to this non-transferable limited warranty. Jurisdiction and venue shall be exclusive to the courts of Knox County, Tennessee.

These warranties give you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights that vary from state to state or country to country. Some states or countries do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you.

SPORTDOG BRAND LIFETIME WARRANTY ON (LUCKY DOG) TRAINING ACCESSORIES

SportDOG Brand warrants to the original retail purchaser that your SportDOG Brand Training Accessories will be free from defects in the material and workmanship, under normal use, for the life of the product. This Lifetime Warranty excludes: loss, neglect, alteration, misuse or accidental damage due to dog chews. SportDOG Brand is not liable or responsible for loss of time, inconvenience, loss of use of your product and any incidental or consequential damages resulting from the use of the product, or caused by any defect, failure, or malfunction of the product, whether a claim is based upon warranty, contract, negligence, or otherwise.

LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY

Within the first year from the original date of purchase, there is no cost to replace malfunctioning equipment. After one year from the original date of purchase, there is a non-refundable service charge to replace equipment.

Replacement equipment comes with a 90 day warranty.

Certain items are not covered under warranty. Misuse, abuse, lost products, or damaged caused by the pet as well as products not purchased through an authorized dealer (second-hand or used products, online auctions, etc.) are not covered under warranty.
