| 30.1 -- BEHAVIOR: Jumping Up,Trash Raiding --Session One Jumping Up: Before you begin: Dogs typically jump up to get attention. If you do not want your dog to jump on you, then friends or members of the family should not encourage this behavior.That means every time the dog jumps on someone, he should be reprimanded or redirected to an alternate and acceptable behavior, for which he can receive a reward. It is best if your dog first understands the sit exercise as taught in this guide. Jumping Up – For dogs that have completed the sit with remote exercise outlined in this guide:
1. Choose your dog’s normal training stimulation level.
2.When your dog lifts his paws off the ground to jump on you, press the stimulation button and give the command “Sit.”
3. Immediately release the stimulation once the dog is sitting and verbally praise him.
4. If your dog ignores the stimulation, increase your stimulation level by 1.
5. Since the dog is seeking attention by jumping up, the sit will soon replace this behavior.
6. Practice this exercise in several different areas and use different people for distractions.
TRIPLE CROWN TIPS
Teaching your dog to sit for greetings (an obedience command covered in this guide) will show him the proper and polite way to receive attention. Use a low level of stimulation, as you do not want your dog to become fearful of the person he was corrected for jumping on. Press the stimulation button as soon as your dog attempts to jump up. Immediately release the stimulation button when he sits. Reward while sitting. |
