Get dog notifications and direction info via Bluetooth on your watch from your Garmin Astro 430 or Garmin Alpha
I picked up a Fenix 3 watch a year back or so. I was looking for something to keep up with my steps and to connect with my phone so I could see my text messages without having to take my phone out of my pocket. I've become a big fan. It's a pretty neat product and it can take a heavy dose of abuse. It also holds a long charge and recharges at a super rapid pace.
I'm now a much bigger fan with the software update that now connects the Fenix 3 with the Garmin Astro 430 and the Alpha 100.
By connecting your Garmin GPS handheld with your Fenix 3 watch you will get notifications on your wrist. This will include point, treed and lost communication warnings. The vibration warning will be much easier for folks to notice, especially in windy situations.
The Fenix 3 will also show the distance and direction of your dogs. This means you will be able to get to your dogs by looking at your watch and never have to remove your GPS handheld from its holster or unclip it from your vest.
The Garmin Fenix 3 is one of the coolest additions to the Alpha and Astro lines.
I've really enjoyed testing it and I think it will be a great help running dogs.

Serious Style That Stands Up to the Roughest Conditions
Fenix 3 HR features a protective stainless steel bezel and buttons with reinforced housing for extra durability. A sunlight-visible high-resolution color Garmin Chroma Display with LED backlight lets you access your data in any light. Fenix 3 HR is water rated 100 meters and has a battery life of up to 50 hours in UltraTrac battery saver mode, 16 hours in GPS mode and up to 3 months in watch mode (all depending on settings).
Elevate Wrist Heart Rate Technology
Fenix 3 HR watch includes Elevate wrist heart rate technology, giving you the option to monitor your heart rate without wearing a chest strap. In addition to counting steps and monitoring sleep, Fenix 3 HR uses heart rate to provide accurate calories burned information and quantify the intensity of your fitness activities.
Advanced Fitness Metrics
Fenix 3 HR is packed with training features to tell you about your form and fitness. The first is the VO2 max estimator. When used with a heart rate monitor, Fenix 3 HR crunches data, including your running speed, beats per minute and heart rate variability to estimate the maximum volume of oxygen you can consume per minute. Track changes to your VO2 max to see your fitness gains and to compare with your peers. Other fitness metrics include recovery advisor with a recovery timer and recovery check, plus a Race Predictor, which estimates your ideal finish time based on your current VO2 max number.
Fenix 3 HR incorporates sophisticated Garmin running watch feedback on your running form by reporting multiple metrics. When used with the HRM-Run monitor, Fenix 3 HR reports your cadence, vertical oscillation and ground contact time. These metrics are called running dynamics, and they affect your running economy.
The Fenix 3 HR isn't just for running; special feature sets help swim training and skiing too. Borrowing from the Garmin Swim, Fenix 3 HR tracks your distance, pace, stroke count and more. You just tell Fenix 3 HR the size of the pool you're swimming in and begin your workout. Ski/Board mode puts speed, distance, vertical drop and an automatic run counter (with Auto Pause for the lift line) and more at your fingertips. You can even use your Fenix 3 HR as a glove-friendly remote, via ANT+, for the VIRB and VIRB Elite action cameras.
Go further with your running data and tap into extended physiological metrics and advanced running dynamics. Fenix 3 HR reports the following data:
Vertical oscillation and ratio -- the degree of "bounce" in your running motion and the benefit ratio to stride length
Ground contact time and balance -- shows how much time, in the running motion, your foot is on the ground rather than in flight and lets you check your running symmetry
Cadence -- number of steps per minute
Stride length -- determines a responsive current pace
Physiological metrics measure your heart to provide:
Stress score: Fenix 3 HR measures your heart rate variability while standing still for 3 minutes to provide you with an estimated stress level. The scale of this is 1 to 100, with low scores indicating lower stress levels
Performance condition: After running for 6-20 minutes, Fenix 3 HR compares your real-time condition to your average fitness levels
Lactate threshold: Through analysis of your pace and heart rate, Fenix 3 HR estimates the point where your muscles start to rapidly fatigue
Navigate Your Way
No other navigator GPS plus ABC (altimeter, barometer and compass) wristwatch offers you the combined training functions and Garmin's leading GPS technology. Fenix 3 HR provides comprehensive navigation and tracking functionalities to guide you on and off the beaten track. Its built-in sensors provide information on heading, elevation and weather changes.
It records a GPS track log creating a "breadcrumb trail" as you move. It also allows you to mark locations, such as a start/finish line, course checkpoint, or a campsite, vehicle or other points of interest. With Fenix 3 HR, you can create and follow courses, mark up to 1,000 locations and store up to 10,000 track points and navigate to them.
Plan trips and share adventures with friends and family using BaseCamp.
Altimeter, Barometer and Compass
Fenix 3 HR is equipped with ABC sensors to provide relevant real-time information. The built-in altimeter provides elevation data to accurately monitor ascent and descent, while the barometer can be used to predict weather changes by showing short-term trends in air pressure.
The 3-axis electronic compass keeps your bearing whether you're moving or not.
Fenix 3 HR auto-calibrates its ABC sensors using its GPS receiver and also auto sets the time based on location.
