  • Gun Dog Supply Exclusive: One Hour BASIC OBEDIENCE Ecollar Training Video

Garmin PRO 550 PLUS Training + TT15X GPS Tracking Collar $40 Value -- You get this FOR A PENNY when you buy this ecollar.

We are proud to announce that Professional Dog Trainer Robin MacFarlane is working with us! We just wrapped another video shoot, and are launching her latest DVD.

PREVIEW: Watch a 10-minute Preview here...

What's interesting about these videos is that Robin has never worked with these dogs before, and several younger dogs have never been trained on an ecollar.

First, Robin walks you through the basic obedience commands showing what proper form looks like.

Next, Robin shows how she introduces the ecollar to two of Steve's puppies, Jack & Tilly, and shows you how to find the right STIM level to communicate with your dog.

She then turns that into a lesson for your dog to recognize that STIM means pay attention to your handler and expands that into a basic recall.

Additional segments include teaching RECALL, PLACE, SIT, and HEEL.

Exclusively available at Gun Dog Supply.

    PRO 550 PLUS + TT15X Range

Collar range is up to 2 miles which is ample for most dog training or hunting situations. Maximum range is based on "line of sight." This means that to get the full range out of a system there should be nothing between the transmitter and the receiver, and the terrain should be flat and open. This isn't going to happen in most places that we spend time with our dogs. The range on all of the systems that we carry will vary depending on training conditions, including weather, terrain, and the presence of cover.

Remember, too much range will never hurt, but too little could be a problem.

    PRO 550 PLUS + TT15X

    Gun Dog Supply EXCLUSIVE

One hour of BASIC OBEDIENCE training
    from Pro Trainer Robin MacFarlane.

    Garmin "X" Series Collars

The TT15X is a track and train collar while the T5X is tracking only. Both collars are compatible with the Astro 430, all four Alpha handhelds, and the PRO 550 Plus. They can be tracked from multiple handhelds at the same time and can be run at the same time as TT10, TT15, and T5 collars.

Please note that Garmin's "X" collars are NOT compatible with the Astro 320 or 220.

The "X" collars have the same physical design as Garmin's regular size collars, but with several upgraded features:

  • Longer Battery Life -- up to 80 hours of run time using the 2.5 second update rate
  • Garmin Express Update Option -- you can update your "X" collar's software with Garmin Express
  • Sleep Mode -- you can put your "X" collar into sleep mode using Alpha handhelds, extending battery life even longer
  • Collar "About" Screen -- on Alpha 200i, 200, and 10 handhelds, you can check your "X" collar's software version

  • Extended Battery Life

The biggest improvement on these collars is longer battery life.

Every time we talk with Garmin, battery life is a topic. With the "X" collars they have drastically increased battery life and added options to stretch it out even longer if needed.

We are seeing between 60 and 80 hours of run time off a single charge with a 2.5-second update rate. Setting your collar on a 5 or 10-second update rate will push it past 80 hours, and a 2-minute update rate will give you over 130 hours.

This will be especially helpful for folks with big running dogs or in lost dog situations. An "X" collar set in Rescue Mode drops down to a 2-minute update rate when the battery reaches less than 25% capacity, giving you the maximum possible time to locate a lost dog. More battery life = more time.

There are few things more useless than a tracking collar with a dead battery.

Keep in mind that this extended battery life option doesn't change my take on charging your collars.

I still recommend that you charge them after every use.

I want you to have the maximum battery life available if you need it. The only way to make that happen is to charge your system before each use. Also, keep in mind there has not been a change in the handheld batteries, so you will still need to charge them pretty much every night anyway.

Updating Your Collars with Garmin Express

With the "X" collars, you can now update both your collars and your handheld with Garmin Express.

This eliminates the need to have multiple programs installed to keep your system up-to-date. I prefer Garmin Express for several reasons, but not being able to update everything from one program has been a hassle. Now every new dog tracking product can be updated using Garmin Express.

    Sleep Mode

The "X" collars have a Sleep Mode option just like the Garmin MINI collars.

Sleep Mode allows you the option of using your Alpha handheld to shut off both radios in the collar (GPS and handheld communication), significantly extending battery life. The collar searches every few seconds for a turn-on signal. Once you give the signal from your handheld, the radios turn back on and the collar returns to normal communication mode.

Note that you must be within range to activate the collar.

This is a specialized feature that really isn't going to be used by most of our customers. It's designed for situations where either you can't get to a dog in time to pick him up and are forced to leave him out overnight, or you are intentionally leaving him out and want to preserve battery life.

We have a few folks that like to leave their collars on their dogs all day while hunting, even when moving around in their vehicle, and Sleep Mode lets them conserve run time. I'm not sure if it's still necessary with the longer battery life, but the option is there.

Folks with livestock protection dogs will like the Sleep Mode feature. It will give you extra-long battery life while still keeping up with the location of your dogs.

    "About" Screen

The "X" collars give you the ability to view your collar software data on your Alpha 200i, Alpha 200, or Alpha 10 handheld.

This means you can check the software version from your handheld without the use of a computer. Not a giant deal, but it's a feature that we had back in the Astro 320 / 220 days, and it's nice to see its return.

I'm extremely pleased with these new collars.

We always want more range, longer battery life, and more durability from our tracking collars.

While we only get one of the big three updated here, it's an important update -- perhaps the most important -- and it will make finding lost dogs easier.

    Garmin PRO 550 PLUS Handheld

The Garmin 550 PLUS was designed for folks that need a better e-collar with their GPS / E-collar combination system.

Every combo tracking and training system on the market up until now has been designed as a tracker first and a training collar second.

The 550 PLUS is the answer for folks that need an e-collar first. Based on the classic Tri-Tronics PRO 500 design, the PRO 550 PLUS is an e-collar that lets you raise and lower stimulation levels one-handed while never having to take your eyes off your dog. There is no other combination system on the market that has the ease of use of the PRO 550 PLUS.

The GPS tracking on the PRO 550 PLUS is a simplified version of the same tracking system that the Garmin ALPHA and ASTRO units use.

  • It will tell you the direction your dog is from you, how far away he is, and if he is moving or standing still.
  • The tracking screen is easy to read with a large directional arrow and easy to read numbers.
  • It offers everything most folks need without excessive and overcomplicated features.
  • While the tracking is simple, it performs just as well as other Garmin systems.

  • An option for folks that want both the advanced tracking features of the ALPHA and the ease of use of the PRO 550 PLUS handheld is to add the handheld only to the ALPHA system that you already run.

The 550 PLUS will work with all TT15X, TT15, and TT10 collars that have been on the market since the ALPHA was released.

Looking forward to a better evaluation.
    Pros

Garmin Pro 550 Plus- Great training e-collar & GPS
    March 19, 2021
Use this collar for training 100%. Was looking at this device for a while and glad I purchased. My buddy also uses this collar while hunting and has no concerns. But again I use for training only and its perfect for the job. Only one recommendation - I would love to have a trash break intensity/setting for a one time correction for chasing rabbits, etc. just need that extra intensity on certain occasions
    Pros
    • Easy to read GPS and use
    • Has good feel in hand - well balanced
    Cons
    • Make sure you are on the right collar its easy to accidentally change toggle/dog

Simple to use, does all I wanted.
    January 29, 2021
My big running pointers can get out of sight really fast. With the 550 Plus TT15 combo, I know where they are and what they are doing. Sometimes they forget that they are working for me and a quick vibration, buzz or light stimulation is all they need to bring them back in. I have one young bitch that is real timid and an older dog that is really bold. The 550 Plus has settings to adapt to both. Simple to use and at 78 yrs. young, “SIMPLE” means a lot to me.
    Pros
    • Simple to use
    • A full charge last for days.
    • Small screen but it's really easy to read.
    Cons
    • Somewhat concerned about the toggle switches wearing out. When working multiple dogs there is a lot of switching going on. Time will tell, I may be wrong.

    Great simple GPS
    December 22, 2020
This by far appears to be the best option for a GPS/training system no touch screens to deal with.
Always a pleasure doing business with Gun Dog Supply
    Pros
    • Simple, easy to use. Great for winter and gloves not touch screen to deal with. Just like using the Pro 550 I'm use.
    Cons
    • Won't turn on/off accessory beeper. Won't work with PT10 collar so if you're running both systems you have to carry two controllers. Maybe Garmin will upgrade these features in the future.

    Garmin Pro 550 Plus
    September 28, 2020
Garmin Pro 550 Plus is yet again a well made durable product from Garmin. I had the Pro 550 and loved everything about it but I needed GPS for working in tall brush. The Plus solved my problem and to take it one step further I synced it to my Garmin Instinct Watch. It's a great combination. I kept the old Pro 550 for training. Only drawback to the Plus is it doesn't feature the bark collar option. Gun Dog Supply came through with another great product, delivered in a timely fashion. Thanks! Picture of the Pro 550 Plus on my GSP "Natty Boh" attached. Can't wait till pheasant season.
    Pros
    • Great for training, has all the training features of the Pro 550 that made it one of the best. GPS gives me all the quick accurate detail I need without hassle or complications. I know were my dog is and what she is doing. Much more relaxing when your dog is in brush & tall cover.
    Cons
    • Doesn't have the bark collar feature.

    Great Outdoor ~~~ Horrible Indoors
    January 26, 2024
We all have different scenarios we train for, whether it is the upcoming hunting season / test, outdoor obedience or in home manners, this handheld excels in everything “OUTDOORS”.
I have not once had an issue with this setup outside. It delivers accurate distance, direction, easy to use functionality and numerous other great features. When in the field, I wouldn’t want any other unit.

HOWEVER, I am extremely disappointed that the unit doesn’t function at all if the handheld doesn’t have a GPS signal. I could understand if the “GPS Tracking” aspect didn’t work, but to lose all functionality of stimulation which kills the versatility of this unit…(IMHO).

Every now and then my dog decides it would be a good idea to jump on the island, formal dining room table or people when we greet them at the door. When a correction is given in these scenarios, the light on the handheld flashes amber and the correction isn’t given…then I notice “waiting on handheld GPS” displayed on the screen.

I called and spoke to Garmin about this thinking I was doing something wrong, but nope, all functionality of the transmitter is disabled when GPS signal is lost and it does NOT have good reception indoors.

    Generic manual doesn't help operate
    November 15, 2023
Manual and YouTube shows no detail. I'm left to guess. When I first operated I didn't know you don't have to pair collar each time. Nothing tells us about how to turn on controller, long press on switch, sort press, momentary switch? So, you don't know when to stop pressing button. Needs idiots guide, but I guess it's too much to ask idiots to write that.
    Pros
    • Once you figure it out, it works nice.
    Cons

    Not what I hoped for
    November 15, 2023
I had hoped that the tracking would be a little more accurate between the Pro 550 plus and tracking collar. The TT25 is too large for my small French Brittany. Hoping Garmin brings back the TT15
    Pros
    • The Plus 550 is easy to use
    Cons
    • The collar is too big for my small French Brittany. Not always able to have contact. It's unfortunate that Garmin doesn't have the TT15 anymore.

    Great simple GPS/training collar
    November 19, 2022
Started off rough as the GPS didn't seem to give accurate distance. The tech support at Gun Dog was excellent! Turned out the handheld and collar needed a software update which was simple. Took my GSP out hunting and the collar/GPS worked perfect.
    Pros
    • Simple, easy to use and set up
    • Easy to read direction/distance of the dog on the handheld
    • Good training collar, can be used with gloves on
    Cons
    • None

First time using this type of device and I love it. Training a new puppy for hunting and he’s getting along just fine.
    Pros
    • Easy to use and does both training and tracking.

Feet or yards, feet or yards, feet or yards...
    October 17, 2022
I've been using the Garmin Pro 550 Plus with TT 15 collars for about 3 years, purchased through Gun Dog Supply. A couple basic functions of the 550 Plus work well - direction and pointing vibration. However, it has 2 features that are perpetually very irritating. First is that the distance measurement changes from feet to yards when distance is beyond 99 (or 100?) feet. WHY? My dog typically ranges 30 to 100 yards away, depending on cover type. I too often must pause to study the screen to know whether my dog is, say, 90 yards or only 90 feet away; I move at a brisk pace and want to know distance at a glance. No can do with the 550 Plus.

I asked a rep at Gun Dog Supply what the heck's up with this and he replied that maybe it's to hone in on the dog when you're trying to find it on point. My response, in good humor: I don't care whether the dog is, say, 52 feet versus 53 feet away... I'm not hunting field mice in my weedy backyard with a pointing cat : ) I also contacted Garmin directly about this.

Geez, I wish Garmin used the metric system so this foot-yards-foot-yards etc foolishness wasn't possible... I can understand meters far better than trying to decipher feet vs. yards, and to make matters worse, size of letters in the abreviation for feet, "ft," is in about font size 1... in other words, itty-bitty tiny. At any rate, I'm surprised as heck that no one else who submitted reviews commented on this!

2nd is the light quality of the screen. Late in the day, especially under a forest canopy, it gets tough to decipher the screen... just not bright enough. Drives me nuts. Ironically, on my dog's collar I can turn headlights on yet I need a headlamp to see the screen on my 550. I note some others commented on this CON feature.

All things considered, for my hunting purposes the 550 Plus is no better than the older thing I had that cost half as much. For hunting in woodlands I'm now going back - way back - to a bell (skipping the beeper thing).

It works! Dogs position relative to mine and movements easliy and quickly assessed. Not perfect but definitely affective. Must have or I would be concerned about the whereabouts of my 8 month old Brittiny hunting dog even with the bells around his neck. The video is a plus. Overall 4.5.
    Pros
    • Easy setup and short learning curve following the Owner Manual instructions.
    Cons
    • A little long/bulky, sticks out of hunting vest pockets, need to add a lanyard.

    Perfect for my needs
    August 26, 2022
I bought this gps unit/ collar in anticipation of a hunting trip out of state. However in using it for a few weeks just working the dog in cover, it really gives me peace of mind. I can’t always see the dog in heavy cover. Or hear her, despite paging her. Finally I can tell at a glance her distance and direction. I only gave four stars because it’s only been a few weeks and certainly not an inexpensive product, so I expect longevity too.
    Would definitely recommend.
    Pros
    • Fairly easy to use and simple distance, direction to your dog.
    Cons
    • Not cheap.

Works great once you figure it out
    June 15, 2022
Wish it came with a printed copy of the manual. It would be helpful to learn how to use it since this is the first training and/or gps collar that I have ever used. Where I hunt and train there is no cell service to look up the manual. The collar itself works great for my pointing dog. It gives me great peace of mind when out in the field. Other than that it is a great collar. Wish it came with a lanyard, I ended up making one.
    Pros
    • Range
    • Variety of settings
    • Battery life
    Cons
    • No manual to reference when you don't have cell service

Great product for training. Quick to change from dog to dog without having to look at a screen. However can’t see screen after dark. Glad I have it for daytime training. I have the alpha 100 as well It’s just not as quick or handy for training work
    Pros
    • Quick & easy to correct dogs without having to scan through so many screens
    Cons
    • Can't see screen after dark. Only allows up to 3 dogs at a time

Software cannot be updated with a Mac.
    December 23, 2021
This collar will get you a few more birds and it’s definitely safer to know where your dogs are at. However, it is not always reliable. Garmin makes regular updates to the software needed to properly operate the collar. Without updated software the gps is not accurate. So you need to constantly check for software updates. The biggest problem with this is that you are a mac user you will not be able to update the software on the collar. The garmin software installer app only works on PCs.

So know that if you own a mac, you will also need to buy a pc just to continually keep the software updated to actually know where your dogs are.

Do not buy this collar if you are a Mac user.

    Pros
    • You can generally know where your dogs are and if they are on point or not.
    Cons
    • Only accurate with updated software. You can only update the software on a pc and not a Mac.

    A Great Addition
    October 28, 2021
The 550 Pro Plus is a great addition to my hunting gear. My two Wirehaired Pointing Griffons and I hunt from the Dakota's west and south to Nevada. I have used an Alpha 100 for the first 4 years with my dogs. It worked well but required too much visual and dexteral interaction. Along comes the 550 Pro Plus and I snap it up. Much easier to use without taking my eyes of the prey or the dogs. I still carry my Alpha to get the detail i need from the onxhunt maps if nothing less than for safety when the Griffs are out of sight. Having a spare collar that came with the 550 is an asset. I only have one complaint, so see my cons.
    Pros
    • So easy to use without distracting me from the hunt.
    Cons
    • My only con has nothing to do with the 550 pro plus but with the holster options. I would love to have a nylon holster that offers MOLLE attachment options. I have to rig a zip-tie to hold it on my upland vest strap.
    • The next thought is for product development. I would like to have the option to program the baseline intensity setting so it changes when I switch between dogs. The intensity setting dial can be used to override the baseline setting when required. Food for thought.

    Point alert
    October 26, 2021
Very annoying to find out that the weak vibration on the handheld device hanging at the end of a cord is unable to be felt. I would’ve expected this to have an audible alert rather than a vibration which is basically useless. Much cheaper collar systems provide this feature

    skeptical of calibration
    September 15, 2021
The unit works as advertised, however, there is a problem with calibration. I tried calibrating the compass and the unit wouldn't respond. After talking with the Gun Dog reps I was sent to the Garman techs. They worked me through the updates and factory reinstall. It still wouldn't calibrate, but the compass pointed North and the GPS worked fine, so I am keeping it. I am a little skeptical of the non-calibration, but the Garmin folks said they would stand behind their product.
    Pros
    • Works as advertized
    Cons
    • Trouble calibrating North

    • Simplicity , ergonomics, battery life, vibrates when dog on point.
    Cons
    • Would be nice to have a separate vibrate button instead of toggling back and forth with the dial.

I have been using this training tool with my one year old Brittany for a couple of weeks. The versatility of using tone, vibration and stimulation makes this a great training tool. I can't wait to get her out in the field to test out the GPS tracking.

Works as advertised but a little slow
    June 17, 2021
I bought this collar for it's tracking ability. I usually run my dogs with beepers but having recently lost most of my hearing I had a really difficult time discerning the direction the beep was coming from.

This tracking collar solves that to a degree as it will give a distance and direction to the dog. While I've only had it a short while I believe it will help tremendously when hunting season arrives.

I've owned Tri-Tronics for decades and always like them, they do what they say and are robust. This Garmin version is no different.

The only con on it is that the 2.5 second updating is a bit slow as my dog outruns that. Meaning it it's always 2.5 seconds behind the dog - so if you have a fast big running dog it the distance and direction will be slightly behind the dog. Not that big of deal as it still gives a good indication if the dog is close or moving away. If the dog stops or is on point, the device buzzes you and can really hone into the dogs position within a few feet.

I do like the light on it, it's bright enough that you can see it in the darker woods which will also help locating a dog on point.

Also the independent tone button is really nice as you don't have to fiddle with the dial going between tone and shock as I have to on my current Tri-Tronics G3.

I also bought the holster for it and that works well. I also got the Garmin Fenix watch and can link it to the dog and see direction and distance on my wrist - I think that's going to be really nice not having to look at the controller when walking in on a point with gun in position but just look your wrist.

    Pros
    • Robust
    • Typical Tri-Tronics quality
    • Independent tone button
    • Vibration Mode
    • Fairly accurate
    Cons
    • Little slow on the update cycle of 2.5 seconds
    • Controller is bigger than most
    • Collar is also pretty big size

    Cons

Garmin 550 mini is just what I needed for my squirrel dog. Works great and simple to use. The only drawback is for smaller dogs the antenna is long and it aggravates my dog, she’s only 18 pounds
    Pros
    • Simple to use
    Cons
    • Antenna to long
