Because of where we live (North Mississippi), I really don't get to use dog heaters that much. We just don't get enough cold weather down here. If you have a good dog house in Central or North Mississippi, you really don't need a
dog house heater.
But if you live in Minnesota or Montana or have a dog that just "likes its conveniences," this is a really neat product. Also, older dogs are just like older people and need extra care, so kennel heaters are great for them, too.
The second generation Hound Heater is a little more sophisticated dog house heater. Unlike the original Hound Heater, this one comes with a built-in thermostat. You can set it and when it gets down to a certain temperature, it will turn itself on. When it heats up to that temperature, it will cut itself off. On the older Hound Heaters, you had to buy another product to get this feature.
You generally want to mount this dog house heater on the back wall with a little distance between the side walls and the ceiling. There needs to be a little space in between the heater and the walls. Also, you don't want to mount it where the dog is going to lay on top of it or roll over on it. It needs to be up above the dog.
The Hound Heater needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet. Directions and a heat shield are also included.
PLEASE NOTE: The biggest thing you want to keep in mind is that you want to make sure the electrical cord is NOT
where the dog can get to it, especially if you have a chewer.
"Comes on when needed, shuts off when not needed, and doesn't burn him when he touches it."
By: Brenda Nelson From AR
Family pet. Someone dumped a Lab pup off at our house, and of course we took him in. Best thing we have ever done outside of taking in a Brussell Griffon. But about the heater, it is just what you need for your outside pets. They can keep their big comfy beds, and the heater is attached to side of their house. Comes on when needed, shuts off when not needed, and doesn't burn him when he touches it. I would highly recommend this. And Rufus loves his new home with his heater.

English Setter. Owns 2 dogs. Hunts. The design is great and the installation was very simple. The thermostat is a compliment to the product. If you're in a climate area like mine, the temperature will sometimes range as much as 40 degrees in a single day and night. I set the thermostat and I know that the dogs will be comfortable during extreme changes. I'm also very confident in the safety of using the heater. It's a great product!

Family pet. Delivery was surprisingly quick, and we could not be happier with our purchase! Exactly what we needed to keep our outdoor dog warm on cooler nights. We were concerned the unit might be noisy....and were completely thrilled that it is silent!!! The low setting has been sufficient to keep our dog warm in 20 degree temps. She no longer curls up in a tight ball in her dog house at night. Rather, she stretches out and hangs her paws off her bed! She's happy, and so are we!!!

By: Tim Wright From MI
Owns 2 dogs. Hunts. Family pet. It installed easily and works well. My helpful tip is that if you do not have a door closure or door flap in the doghouse door - it diminishes how this unit heats the dog house. I do NOT have a door flap on my doghouse and I'm completely satisfied, but I understand how it works. The hound heater is mounted on the upper porting of the back wall and the door does not have a flap and if it is 20 degrees outside, then the hound heater heats up the area above the top of the door opening just fine, but much of the heat simply escapes through the open door so that to maintain 50 degrees at the level of the dogs is not possible without a door flap. And in fact depending on where the Hound Heater is installed (how high on the wall), if the thermostat (on the bottom of the hound heater) is lower than the top of the open door, then the unit may run continuously (which can be fine also) as it cannot keep the air at the level of the hound heater thermostat at, say 55 degrees. I hope this helps. After installing it I understood how it works - which is fine for me. The moral of the story is get a dog flag/closure. For me, I have a puppy that has destroyed 3 purchased dog doors so far. Happy Hunting.

Owns 4 dogs. Hunts. Family pet. Really like this product. I purchased because it was getting cold at night and I had a litter on the way. The coop is big enough to house 3 full-size beagles and does not have a door. I did insulate the coop from top to bottom. When the night time temps fall into the low 30's the coop stays between high 60's and low 70's, with the thermostat set between low and medium. It was easy to install and keeps it nice and warm for pups. I'm impressed so far. John

Owns 4 dogs. Family pet. Looks very well built. Have only had it a short time, so I don't know if it will last. The steel coil around the cord is a joke. That won't stop any dog (with teeth) from chewing up the cord. I put flexible steel conduit on mine. Even that is not chew proof for a big dog but it is an improvement. Temps have only dropped to the high 20s here at night but it keeps a wooden dog house with no door warm enough. It is under a carport so wind and rain are not an issue. A high priced item but so far I am pleased. Had about one month.

Owns 3 dogs. Family pet. I have a large dog house (4x4x16) that is insulated along with 2 Hound Dog Heaters. When the outdoor temperatures has been in the single digits the dog house internal temperature has not gotten below 45F. I had hoped that between the 2 heaters and the insulation it would have kept the house a little warmer since my dogs are getting older. But all in all the dogs seem to be fairly comfortable. I used one Hound Dog heater for several years along with a heat lamp which seemed to keep the dog house a little warmer, but I was uncomfortable with the heat lamp so I purchased the second heater. The Hound Dog heaters allow the dogs a comfortable way to get out of the cold and me the piece of mind that they are safe.

By: C J Peyton
Owns 2 dogs. Family pet. My dog house is over-sized to accommodate 2 dogs, so the heater doesn't keep the house as warm as I had hoped. It will generally keep the internal temp of the house at around 20 degrees warmer than the exterior temperature. Most of the winter that is just fine. Its only the coldest nights that I wish it kept the house a little warmer. I probably need a 2nd heater to keep the space at a more consistent temp, but the cost is prohibitive. I wish there was a unit that was larger for bigger dog houses. All in all I like this heater it does what its supposed to do.

Average Temperature Ranges:
Low to Medium -- 32-50 degrees F
Medium to High -- 50-80 degrees F
Most people set their Hound Heater Furnace slightly above Medium. Please remember that the size of your dog house, its
level of insulation, and door greatly affect the Furnace's ability to reach any of these temperatures.
Tools Required: You will need a measuring device, drill, 1 1/8" wood bit, screw driver and six wood screws (not included).
Step 1 -- Tape the Hound Heater mounting template in any corner of the dog house. We suggest mounting it away from the entrance.
Step 2 -- Place the bit in the center of the template's black circle.
Step 3 -- Drill a hole all the way through the wall.
Step 4 -- Carefully feed the cord all the way through the previously drilled hole making sure the cord is not kinked.
Step 5 -- Mount the Hound Heater in an upright position using four sturdy wood screws. The "C" on "Caution Hot" is
the top of the unit.
Step 6 -- Mount the Hound Heater Heat Shield about 2 inches above the top of the Hound Heater. The purpose of the shield is to deflect the rising heat and disperse it more efficiently in your pet's house. It will also protect the ceiling from getting too warm.
Step 7 -- Set the thermostat to the desired temperature for your pet. (Medium setting is approximately 45-50 degrees F)
Step 8 -- Plug the unit into a GFI outlet.
NOTE -- The Hound Heater Deluxe Dog House Furnace is designed for wall mounting only. Floor or ceiling mounting can result in permanent damage to your Hound Heater. For maximum effectiveness, it is important that your dog house is insulated and preferably has a door or flap.
