What does this system do?
It detects when your pet leaves the "home zone." The home zone is a circle centered on a point you define. The minimum recommended size for the home zone is a 300 foot radius. It can be set larger if you choose.
When a zone violation is detected the system will notify you by e-mail, text message and/or telephone call. We recommend you set up all 3 notification types.
Once you are notified you can locate your pet by visiting http://www.petsafegpslocator.com or a PetSafe GPS Operator can guide you to your pet on your cell phone.
What this system does NOT do:
This system will not keep your pet in the home zone.
This system is dependent on good AT&T Cellular GSM coverage. Click here to check the coverage in your area. If you do not have good coverage or the dog enters an area of poor coverage the system may not be able to locate your dog.
We recommend your pet be kept in a contained area when off leash, either with a fence or electronic containment system, but we also realize that a determined dog can get out of even the best fence. The PetSafe GPS Locator is a great tool to help you locate your pet when this happens.

How It Works:
The PetSafe GPS Locator collar makes it easy to find your roaming pet and bring him home again. Petsafe's state-of-the-art technology uses assisted global positioning system (AGPS) tracking to pinpoint your dog's location, day and night. Their 24-hour customer care center will help you to bring your pet home.
- Program a Home Zone area for your dog -- If he roams outside of the Home Zone, the PetSafe GPS Locator identifies the event as an escape or boundary violation, and notifies you via phone, email, or text message.
- The PetSafe GPS Locater shifts into Locate Mode -- continually monitoring your dog's location and providing GPS coordinates to your personal PetSafe GPS Locator website.
- Once alerted, either use the Petsafe website or contact a Petsafe customer care specialist to help track your dog. The Petsafe Customer Care Specialist can remain on the line with you until you and your dog are back together again.
When you want to take your dog for a walk, simply put the PetSafe GPS Locator into Walk Mode. If your dog is outside of the Home Zone when Walk Mode expires after 45 minutes, a boundary violation is initiated. Of course, if you and your dog like long walks, you can extend the Walk Mode an additional 45 minutes before the original minutes expire.
As a safety precaution, you also receive a phone call, text message, and/or e-mail message when the batteries on the PetSafe GPS Locator run low and need to be recharged or replaced. Your system includes an extra set of 2 rechargeable batteries and a charger. When you get a Low Battery Alert simply swap out the batteries in the unit, and recharge the batteries you removed. Typical battery life is approximately 4-5 days.
Operating Modes:
Monitor Mode -- The default operating mode of the PetSafe GPS Locator collar regularly checks that your dog is in the Home Zone.
Walk Mode -- Allows you and your dog to leave the Home Zone for up to 45 minutes at a time; then automatically reverts back to Monitor Mode.
Locate Mode -- If your dog leaves the Home Zone - or if the Walk Mode elapses before your dog is back in the Home Zone - the unit shifts into Locate Mode and sends an escape alert to the Customer Care Center. When you receive the alert, you can track your pet using Petsafe's website or you can call the Petsafe Customer Care Center to begin the tracking process.
IMPORTANT: Before buying, check the Cellular Coverage Map for coverage in your area.
Frequently Asked Questions:
How accurate is GPS? -- Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking was originally developed by the U.S. Department of Defense. The satellite-based system is extremely accurate, typically pinpointing a location within a few meters.
Why do you use Assisted GPS and how does it help? -- Assisted GPS helps the unit to receive the signals from the satellites in places such as inside buildings and in wooded areas where standard GPS does not work. You can rest assured that if your pet is lost in the woods or is hiding in a garage that you can find them.
Can the PetSafe GPS Locator be worn by small dogs or cats? -- The PetSafeGPS Locator can be used on dogs that weigh 30 pounds or more.
What is the maximum radius for the PetSafe GPS Locator Home Zone? -- Your PetSafe GPS Locator works in a Home Zone that extends from a center point that you establish. By default, the Home Zone radius is set at 300 feet. It can be adjusted to as far as 50 miles away. Due to the accuracy of GPS, it is recommended that the Home Zone not be set less than a 300 foot radius or a false violation may occur.
Does the PetSafe GPS Locator work outside the USA? -- The PetSafe GPS Locator currently only operates inside the USA.
Will my dog feel anything when crossing his Home Zone boundary? -- Nothing at all.
Can the PetSafe GPS Locator be worn on my dog's regular collar? -- The GPS locator can be worn on most dog collars if it can be threaded onto them.
After I receive a low battery alert, how much time do I have to replace the batteries before they die? -- You have approximately 24 hours from a low battery alert to change out the batteries. However, we recommend that you change out the batteries at your earliest opportunity to ensure adequate battery life in the event your dog is ever lost.
Why do I get a low battery alert in advance of the need for replacement? -- This is a safety feature. If your dog escaped, and the battery had very little life remaining, then the unit could run out of power during the tracking process.
Once I register the product, how long does it take to become activated? -- The recognition of your GPS Locator dog collar may take up to 4 hours after registration.
Is the PetSafe GPS Locator website compatible with my PDA or mobile device? -- The PetSafe GPS Locator website is currently not compatible with browsers typically found in PDA or mobile devices. They are working towards a solution that will provide mobile/PDA users the ability to access the tracking site.
What is the advantage of using a product which utilizes Assisted GPS (AGPS) and cell phone technology for tracking versus using a product which utilizes GPS and RF (Radio Frequencies) to track? -- AGPS helps you locate your dog even if it is in a heavily wooded area or inside a garage; unlike typical GPS which does not work well in heavy cover or inside a structure, such as a house or garage. The cell phone technology allows you to track your pet anywhere there is cell coverage. With RF, if there are obstructions (like trees or houses) the range between you and your pet can be reduced dramatically. The cell phone technology also allows our Customer Care Center to assist you in locating your pet.
If I am tracking my dog and I get a Low Battery Alert, how much time do I still have to find my dog? -- You should have at least 5 - 10 hours, depending on how often you send new Locate commands to the collar. If you were to send a new Locate command once every minute, you would have about 5 hours remaining.
When I change the batteries does the unit remember my Home Zone? -- Yes.
Where is Petsafe's Tracking Customer Call Center located? -- Their call center is located inside the headquarters of PetSafe in Knoxville, TN. |
