Summary: This is my first e collar, and now that I have one I can't believe I waited so long. The SD1825 is idiot proof...I had never used a collar when this arrived and it is very user friendly. I have a Boykin Spaniel and the collar fits her very well and has helped her go from an OK dog to a great dog.
When you buy your first ecollar you have to make a number of choices:
Do I want to train with continuous stimulation or momentary?
Do I want Vibration or Tone?
What if I want BOTH Vibration and Tone?
How much Range do I really need?
How many dogs will I want to control from one transmitter?
Do I need a regular stimulation collar or does my dog require a stronger stimulation level?
Is the collar's stimulation too strong for my dog?
What if I have a mild temperament dog and another one that requires a much higher stimulation level?
What if I need a different level for a softer dog?
It can be hard to make some of these decisions since many of our customers have never USED a training collar before.
I only use continuous stimulation, but you might prefer momentary. What if you THINK you want momentary and you buy a collar
that only has a momentary heavy setup, and then find out 6 months later that you really prefer to train with continuous? If you go with some brands of ecollars, you are screwed.
The SportDOG 1825 gives you the option of customizing your system to fit YOUR needs. It also allows you the option of changing the setup as your needs change or if you want different options in different situations.
The SportDOG SD 1825 may just be a revolution in ecollar technology. 5 years ago SportDOG came on the market and gave us features that the older ecollar companies had refused to add to their systems. If it were not for SportDOG we would not have waterproof transmitters or expandable multi dog systems. The next time you drop your transmitter in the water, make sure you thank the boys at SportDOG for forcing the other companies to step up.
Now SportDOG has done it again putting the highest level of versatility in a long range e-collar. Oh, and did I mention it does all this for the low, low price of $289.95?

Sport Dog SD-1825 --Highly Recommended Reviewed: January 25, 2010
By: DavidI have an Ibizan hound, also known as a Podenco Ibicenco, and I just started using the Sport Dog SD-1825 collar, and the results were immediate. Our dog is obedient at home but when she gets outside and is distracted by all the scents or other dogs in the park it's difficult to get her to come back to us when we want her.
Today, we combined the come command with the collar setting on low and the transmitter stimulation on settings 2 and 3, using low and high continuous stimulation. She came back immediately after hearing the come command and receiving the stimulation. This was a first for us especially when we are far away from her and she is distracted by things more interesting than us.
What I really like about this collar is that the low settings are really low. I even tried it on myself, and was able to give myself continuous stimulation for as long as I liked. It was like a pulsating tickle. I was at first scared about using remote training collars, due to a lot of the bad press they get, but with this collar, I know for a fact that using it responsibly on the settings appropriate for your dog that absolutely no harm is done. And now, my dog gets to enjoy the freedom of being off the leash.
I have been using the transmitter in Mode 4, which allows the side button to be vibrate, and the two front buttons to be low and high continuous stimulation. I am using vibrate on the leash to teach the heel command. And she seems to respond, but less than when we use stimulation. Off the leash, she hasn't yet responded to the vibrate setting, but we've only used it twice so far, maybe after a few more days, she'll get it. I haven't used the tone setting yet, as I live in the city, and there are so many sounds around us, I think it might be a little confusing for her. That being said, I'm sure in the right hands, a tone setting could be a nice training tool as well.
Using the SD-1825 in mode 4 gives me 16 levels of stimulation starting from 1 (low/high), to 2 (low/high) and so forth. Our dog is now responding to settings 2 and 3 depending on her level of excitement. If she's alone, she may respond to level 2, but if other dogs are present she may only respond to level 3 when we give her the come command. We haven't needed to go to higher settings on the dog, although I've tested all the settings on myself, and in an emergency situation if the dog was about to put herself in harms way, I wouldn't think twice to use the higher settings if she was going to run in front of a car or something.
I would recommend anyone interested in a remote training collar read through articles you can easily find online and find training material on how to use the collars. I found some videos on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/user/TritronicsVideos that are excellent.
In conclusion, I'd highly recommend the SD-1825. The transmitter and collar look and feel like they are high quality and the batteries hold their charge for 40-60 hours of use, which means for me, I only need to charge it every few weeks, and it charges in less than 2 hours. Also, the transmitter and collar are waterproof. For the price, quality and features, I'm a happy camper...

The first because it lost sync with the remote and the bottom button broke to were it was stuck on. I promptly received a replacement unit from the company and had to ship it back because the charger was not working properly. I opted to get another model at this point. However, I do believe that this could be a superior unit with a little more testing and fine tuning.

We had used other shock collars in the past and found them to be not only clunky but prone to breakage, or antenna loss or battery failure. This caused us a lot of grief in the field with a very hard-headed English Pointer. When we got a new Vizsla puppy I wanted to be sure and do everything right and from the get go it was obvious that she was a very sensitive and responsive dog so I wanted a collar that would suit her temperment and be a better overall product than our previous purchases.
I read the manual and training instructions thoroughly and started out slowly. Just wearing the collar took her awhile to adjust to. The beep function is awesome, none of our old collars had this. If she doesn't respond to a verbal command, or is out of range of our voices, the beep clues her into us immediately. We virtually never have to apply any shock to her. The charge seems to last forever and the unit is small and easy for her to wear, and there is no antenna to fall off!. The handheld controller is small and well designed. It works not only for me (I have small hands) but for my husband as well and he is always the first to point out flaws in any design.
Last year the last remaining original collar that we used on the English Pointer finally lost its last antenna and the old pointer is one we Have to run with a collar on. So we bought another collar and programmed it to run from the one controller. This is really handy and since the primary level of shock is set in the collar and not the control unit, we don't err as badly when there is an inadvertant shock applied with the lever in the wrong position (we of course try to never have this happen, but it has on occasion).
We did have a problem with the add-on collar within the first few months of owning it, it would not hold a charge and would show recharged in 20 minutes but wouldn't even beep. I contacted you and you gave me the number to call Sportdog directly. Wow. I was So Impressed with their responsiveness!. I fwd'd them my invoice (email) and I had a new collar in a week. They didn't even have me send the old one back. We have had no problems with the new one, but it's great to know that if there Is a problem, it will be remedied quickly and painlessly. I also like that each collar has a different color band (one is hunter orange and one is fluorescent green) which makes it easy to tell them apart.
I recommend this product 100%.

Our dogs already understood our commands, but in moments of excitement they would occasionally become too distracted to listen. After 1 to 3 corrections per dog, the dogs became attentive at all times to what we were asking of them. The dogs were so good and reliable in their behavior that we stopped using the collars. Later, when a problem developed with our male dog wanting to charge a particular dog in the neighborhood, we took out one of the collars again. It took exactly one correction to remind him how we expected him to behave.
The collars are reliable, hold a charge a long time, recharge quickly, and survive the elements amazingly well. We highly recommend them.

As with every electronic I purchase I was skeptical as to how "waterproof" it actually was. Opening day of duck season in 2010 the remote fell out of my chest waders. My hunting partner and I searched for about an hour, until we gave up and wrote it off as a loss. 15 minutes later after the murk had cleared from the water I spotted the remote laying on the bottom of the river; under 2' of muddy water, just off the dog platform. I picked the remote off the bottom of the river and it functioned as though it had been dry all day. I no longer have any doubts of the quality of Sportdog products, and highly suggest them to anyone looking for a product that will perform under the worst of conditions.

By: ChrisI have been using this collar for 9 months. have 2 dogs, a GSP and a lab mix. I bought the 2 dog system and have both collars set up with tone, vibrate, and stimulation. I love the fact that I can work both dogs with one transmitter with different levels of intensity. My mix breed dog was a rescue and was apparently abused with an e-collar. She was terrified by the stimulation so we use the vibration to get her attention when she starts to ignore verbal commands. I have tried several other brands of e-collar and the 1825 is by far the most versatile and best collar. I love the short recharge time thanks to the lithium battery which beats the 9-12 hour recharge time of other brands. Shortly after I purchased the collar I had a problem with one of the buttons on the transmitter and SportDog customer service handled things quickly and efficiently and I had a new transmitter in 2 days. I have had no problems since. I would highly recommend this training collar system to anyone who is looking for a collar with a multitude of programming options especially for someone working with more than one dog.

By: Ben in NevadaI just sold my Dogtra Surestim 7000M to get the SportDog 1825 from you guys. I dream about how I would make a remote and configurable buttons was on my list. I’m trying out the 1825 and I like some things but wish it was a little more configurable.
I don’t like that the “one-second tone followed by continuous” mode delivers a nick following the tone even if you release the button during the tone. I also don’t like that I can’t set the stimulation levels of different buttons independently. There’s just low/high mode which provides two levels that are close, and +2 mode that only works on the side button and is also fairly close. I’d rather the levels be independent so I could configure a very low continuous and a very high nick for example. Someday they’ll have a USB interface on these things so I can plug in into my PC and really customize it.
I also think about a slider or lever that would deliver continuous stimulation at a level determined by how far we press the slider against increasing spring pressure. For this to work especially well, the receiver has to have a smoother delivery of stimulation. Right now, we have capacitors that discharge into the dog with pulses followed by a charge from a battery before the next discharge. It’s really not continuous at all, but pulsing and the rate of pulses is too slow, especially for delivering dynamic stimulation levels.
The Dogtra definitely had more granularity of stimulation levels but this wasn’t especially useful because the buttons weren’t configurable so you had to sweep through a lot of similar levels on the dial to change from low to high or vice versa. Also, Dogtra sells a Low/Med model (7000M) and a Med/High model (7100H) whereas the Sportdog incorporates Low/Med/High all into one receiver. I don’t have a way of measuring which system actually has the broadest range of stimulation levels. The Dogtra system suggests a broader range is available from the transmitter without having to touch the receiver. The obvious advantage of the SportDog system is that different dogs can be on different ranges so you can deliver a level 4 stim on the transmitter wheel and three different dogs can get low 4, medium 4 and high 4 depending on their receiver setting.
My 7000M was a one-dog system. The SportDog system is obviously better at supporting multiple dogs with options for up to 6 dogs on this model. However, this is a feature I do not use. For those who regularly work multiple dogs, there may be better systems still. This is not something I’m interested in.
I don’t especially miss the Surestim feature, but the Dogtra transmitter is a bit smaller which is nice. The Surestim feature would be quite a bit better if it actually involved a feedback loop from the receiver so we knew the receiver worked and not just the transmitter, but that would add some bulk to the receiver to incorporate a feedback transmitter like on the tracking collars.
I’ve seen some transmitters that accept Bluetooth connections so I suspect eventually we’ll see interoperable user interfaces, wrist and finger buttons that link wirelessly to the transmitter in a belt holster the same way a headset works with our phone in a pocket.
Overall, I think the biggest upgrade the 1825 offers compared to the 7000M is the Lithium Ion battery. My Dogtra’s NiMH in the receiver was always going flat and takes 10 hours to recharge. I’m expecting the LiIon will be much better. The additional range is also useful but my dog almost always works close (he’s not a hunting dog). To be fair, Dogtra does offer models with LiIon batteries and longer range but they are quite a bit more expensive and still lack configurability.
I appreciate that the SportDog comes with virtually all the accessories that you’re likely to want and the charging system includes a dock for the collar. Too bad there is no dock for the transmitter but hopefully it will require infrequent charging. The Dogtra requires wire plug-in for both the transmitter and receiver and does not offer a dock for either. Most of the Dogtra accessories that are available are sold separately and cost more, whereas SportDog includes almost everything. However, the Dogtra receiver can be fit to a Cinch-It collar whereas the SportDog requires a very thin collar like the vinyl buckle collar it comes with. The Cinch-It works like a big zip tie, and micro adjusts better and faster than a buckle collar.
Overall, I like the 1825 but I hope to see continued improvements from what we have today.

Toggle Switch Mode 7 is actually "Stim followed by tone". In this mode you get stim first and then tone. It really make no sense but my understanding is that it's used in a European competition sport.

You CAN set the side button to ANY level you want using Toggle Switch Down - Mode 2
On this setting, you can set the side button to any level you want. The dial then controls the front two buttons as a low / high and then you can have the side button set to a much higher level if needed.
I do expect to see some units in the near future that allow the user to select everything from button, setting and levels. I also expect to see units with USB connections and Bluetooth.

Feel free to add my comments to the site. I'll give it 5 stars because I don't think there's
anything better for the money, maybe not even for more money, but of course there's always room
for improvement if someone makes something new.
I'm coming from Schutzhund and Ringsport circles (European competition sports). I'm learning some things from the gun dog people though because I'm doing a lot more with my dog in the real world than on the competition field or ring.
The real world for me is rural Nevada. I think the gun dog people have been doing more in the country and with the remotes for longer. There is one obscure protection sport in the country called "Campagne." As for the remotes, they're definitely used in the protection sports but a lot of people are reluctant to try them and just stick to prong collars.
The only innovation I've seen on the protection side is using two receivers on the same frequency on one collar. This is done because during bitework, the dog's neck muscles swell substantially (over the course of 10 or 15 minutes of biting). Using two receivers allows the collar to be adjusted looser while still maintaining positive contact. When the neck muscles swell, the collar's not too tight. Here's an example: http://leerburg.com/7000plus.htm If nothing else, you get to sell twice as many receivers! Of course you can also just loosen the collar after you've been training for a while. Dogtra makes the "Plus" kits specially for Leerburg. With Sportdog, I think you could program the transmitter/receiver channel yourself so you just need an extra receiver.
My dog is a Bouvier des Flandres. He's 28" and 80 pounds. A hundred years ago these dogs were general purpose farm dogs (herding, cattle droving, livestock guarding, carting and guard dog work) in Belgium. They were almost wiped out by WWI and WWII but since then they've been bred for police and protecton work (KNPV, Schutzhund and French Ring) and for show. I like mine. He's kind and easy to live with. Maybe someday I'll get a GSP or a Brittany or a field trial Retriever for hunting and competition. I like to do stuff with my dog. With my Bouvier I'm hoping to do work in Schutzhund and Mondio Ring but he might decide on a life of leisure for himself as our pet instead. He's going that way. He just turned one so it's hard to say yet. Most people that do these sports use a Belgian Malinois. Anyway, I thought you might like to see a different kind of dog that can still learn something from the gun dog world.

Training was extremely easy as my dogs already knew the commands and only needed to learn to associate the ringer & vibrator to the desired action. They now respond to stimulus at long distances without my needing to yell. I dropped the hand held into water and it survived a ten minute submersion without issue.

A very stubborn rottweiler and a chocolate Lab that is a bit sensitive and skittish. Charging is pretty fast and the batteries have held up just fine. Collar is close to 2 years old and not one problem.

This breed has remained unchanged for a thousand years and are considered a national treasure in Turkey, where their primary purpose is to guard the flocks of sheep and goats while they graze in the mountains. They are left alone for months at a time, with no supervision and no food [ they catch their own food ].. Suffice to say, this dog has a mind of his own, and even with repetitive , continual training, he responds to commands at his own pace. I live in a rural area with lots of woods and pastures. I like to take him with me when I travel around my 100 acres. He would stay with me while I was out. But as soon as I started on my way home, I would have to put a leash on Barney or he would take off. Even when I thought I had him trained to a point where I could trust him, he would obey a couple days but then the next time take off. When he takes off that would mean I would have to drive up and down the road looking for him. Sometimes I would get a call from a neighbor saying Barney was there visiting.
This couldn't go on. Sometimes I use an ATV when I have chores on a far end of the property. I had to make a choice. Leave Barney behind or find a better way. I went online and did some research. I found the Sportdog SD-1825 at Gun Dog Supply and gave it a try. After getting it I read the directions thoroughly and tried it out. Barney is a big dog. He weighs in at 130 lbs. More than once I was dragged through thorn bushes while walking him on a leash and he saw a rabbit or squirrel. After using it the Sportdog SD 1825 only TWO TIMES Barney started listening to commands. Now I take him everywhere with me, no leash, and I never have to worry. Even when tempted by a rabbit or squirrel or a deer, as soon as I call him he stops and comes back. He always stays in sight. And when I let him wander out of my sight, just a buzz of the audible on the collar brings him back.
I consider this a miracle. Thanks.

I've used other brands before, but after reading Steve's review and switching, this is simply and truly most versatile, multifunctional, and durable collar for my hound dog. We've used it daily in all-weather, all-terrain (rain, water, mud, snow) and it's simply the best. FYI, Sportdog's customer service is also excellent (after daily abuse, the side button on the remote seemed sluggish--they immediately FED-EXed a replacement without any hassle, enclosing a return label/postage as well). I have a pointing dog, and like to use a beeper when pheasant & grouse hunting. Every beeper I've seen is designed for a 1" collar. Rather that have a bunch of straps around her neck, I like to have the beeper and e-collar on one. Beeper would slide around the smaller collar. I eventually fixed the beeper in place with a little superglue, and all was well. Overall a great collar and would highly recomend it.

Easy to use:
Once you've walked through the manual to get a feel for how the thing programs, its a piece of cake. It's just plain intuitive once it's programmed.
Collar unit:
Comes with two sizes of prods which helps if you have a hairy/loose skinned dog. The collars are trimmable, but I suggest leaving atleast one untrimmed so you can wrap the collar around the belly "Ronnie Smith Style" to simulate the whoa post. The belly is very sensitive so remember to gauge the belly sensitivity lower than the neck!
Handheld unit:
Easy fit for the hand and doesn't take up much space. The dial is easily toggled with gloves on and so are the buttons and the switch. The lanyard attachment is okay, but I suggest clipping this to your vest or belt; otherwise, any actual upland terrain will make anything that dangles a liability. The dial for stimulation levels goes 1-8, and has a satisfying "click" for each number whether dialing up or down. Thats handy if you'd rather not take your eyes off of the dogs while they are working so you can judge their focus level, attitude, etc. (As long as you can remember what number you're on!)
Durabilty:
I can vouch for the remote's ability to survive a good dunking in a livestock tank. My dog will beeline when she hunts dead on a good mark, and the collar and collar unit don't show any signs of wearing out after being dragged through mud, brush cactus, whatever. Just give it a wipe down if you're worried about it. Both remote and receiver are waterproof, though I confess I am wary of duck hunting on the coast because I'm just not sure about any "waterproof" items in salt water-so I don't know if this is "salt-waterproof". I've hunted with this as cold as my dog will take it, in the teens with windchills right around zero and I didn't have any issues with battery life or range.
Range:
I have a long range dog-I've seen her hit 1,000 yards in open fields so I don't know her limit and that's why I got the SD1825 instead of some of the shorter range e-collars. None of the other ecollars with mile+ ranges seemed to be as flexible and expandable as this one. From vantage points with moderate coverage and occasional trees, this collar works out to nearly two miles (if you believe the gps). I'm sure the range is closer to a mile (or even less) with heavy cover at the bottom of the hills.
Tone/Vibration/Stimulation
I use the tone for "whoa" because I don't like yelling at a dog that probably can't hear me anyway at several hundred yards away. In moderate wind a whistle loses its effectiveness at those distances, ergo the tone. I liked having the flexibility to choose between tone and vibration to see what my dog responds to, turns out the vibration just freaks her out. With most ecollar systems you have to choose between tone and vibration before you know how your dog will respond.
Expandability:
I only have one dog, but I know a puppy is in my future! The programs for the remote allow up to three dogs at a time per remote, and even those settings are intuitive and still allow for a hard nosed dog to run with a soft dog from the same remote. Since the collars themselves can be set to low, medium or high, the remote can handle dogs of all temperaments with very little dialing up and down depending on which dog you are handling.
I would give this product 6 stars if it was made in the USA, and I would definitely pay the price differential were that so. The units that are made in the USA are definitely nice units, but the reason I settled on the SD1825 is I don't want a giant handheld unit, I like the range of the SD1825, I wanted the option of tone/vibration, the list goes on. I'm obviously happy with the product!

For myself this collar is a wire less leash with voice command usually respected with one or two corrections. Most times I do not even have to recall Kaiser back, I use the audio beep option and he will nine time out of ten come out make eye contact and if I whistle or give another audio beep he halls his butt back. The only negative I have is that the battery in the collar gave out in about two years (they claim three to five)and it took a special tool to remove the manufactures specialty screw. But Heck what manufacturer now days in the world does not use good old fashion hex bolts, flat head or phillips screws to secure their product. Hope this helps solidify your decision and best wishes to you and your four canine companion.

The range also seems to be better, not stopped by as many hills, trees, etc as happened with the earlier unit. Although I haven't had the unit long enough to appreciate the new 'low battery' warning lights, I like that that is included now, as before I would just have to assume low battery when the efficacy was lost.

Upon the advise of someone esle I only use the correction button on the level of stimulation that I myself can feel without pain. I use it for hiking in the woods and it\'s fantastic.

I have had labs for 20 years. this was the first dog I could not train to a steady recall. The sport dog 1825 is fantastic. It only took a few shocks before she got the idea. Now she is excellent on the recall and I only need to use the tone feature occasionally as a reminder. This product is so durable. We hike alot in the Sierra Nevada and my dogs do alot of swimming and long distance retrieving. The unit is definitely up to the task.

and got you\\\'re SD 1825 .We spent some time recall training in our yard ,then at the dog park with all kinds of great extra distractions and are now after only a month of using the system able to let our little girl off leash on hikes.I think I had to actually nick her only once or twice in that whole time as she reacts to just the beep in most instances.Overall I don\\\'t even have to use any of the functions.Just having the collar on her lets her know that I can actually somehow reach her which has previously been impossible with my super fast greyhound

By: Bob BreareyThe Sportdog 1825 is unreliable. I started using the unit in July 2009. In the 15 months I’ve had the unit, I’m on my third receiver (collar) unit and my fourth transmitter unit. The collar unit(s) would not hold charge for more than 8 hours even when turned off. The battery was replaced first, followed by two replacements of the collar unit. So far it seems to be working. My experience with the transmitter unit was even worse. I had the upper left button fall off of the first two units. The third unit would not transmit more than 12 yards, just as it came out of the box. Yes, really, exactly 12 yards. I tested it on another human…13 yards and no response. Sportdog replaced the unit for a fourth time, but I haven’t used it. This is the least reliable product I’ve ever owned. All of these failures on an ecollar used to train 1 dog for an hour a day is inexcusable.
PS…I ended up buying a Tri-tronic Pro 100 to replace it. And yes, I’d like my money back from Sportdog.

Today I have noticed that the battery recharging cycle—advertised as 40-60 hours for new batteries—is down at the 40 hour range. Not what I would have expected for a not very heavy use of new equipment, but it's what they advertise.

The reason I deducted a star was I initially had problems with the receiver battery. The manufacturer replaced the battery immediately. As always, Gun Dog Supply was fast and efficient with my order.

By: Mike, UTThe initial transceiver and collar never worked correctly. The company ultimately sent me out 2 different collars and a new hand unit before the system signaled or received correctly. It has been working fine almost daily for over a year now. I am certainly satisfied with its performance. It was easy to train my dog and he responds with just the tone even at great distances.The staff with Sport Dog were very helpful and accommodating (with the exception of one pseudo-intellect that told me the problem might be from me keeping the battery charged). Everyone else was super! Rating would be excellent except for the initial issue.

Lately, however, I'm having trouble with 1 of the collars making contact with the charger during charging. I have to fiddle with it to get it to charge. Were it not for this issue I would rate it excellent.

I would rate it very good to excellent now, the original one I got, the numbers on the dial wore off quickly, but I was able to replace the unit for I believe $50 or $100. Also, warn people to use a plastic zip tie to attach the controller to the lanyard......mine came off in a pond and fortunately I was able to find it (mostly luck)....now I use a small plastic zip tie to keep it on the lanyard. Overall, a good value for the $. Jim

I love my SD-1825. It was a rough start, as the first unit that I ordered would not charge. I was very (underline) pleased with the outstanding customer service that Gun Dog Supply provided. I've had a working unit for about a year, and I love the versatility... vibrate, tone, and stim and an adjustable configuration. I used my collar to train recall in the field; run at heal next to my mountain bike (when I'm on my way to the single track); run at solid heal off lead, and general obedience. My dog is very sensitive to the stimulation, and I'm pleased that the unit provide 16 (if I recall correctly) levels of adjustability. My dog only needs levels 3 and 4. I've tried it on my leg, and there does seem to be a short delay before the stim kicks in, but it could be that I am not sensitive enough to that level.

Problems with unit Reviewed: November 14, 2009
By: Wesley WirickOverall the unit is good to be used with a wide range of dogs. However, as a trainer that uses remote collars very often, I have had problems with this unit losing sync with the remote and with the button sticking and giving a continuous stim to the dog. I have also experienced the unit losing or changing its programing while it was being used as well. If these problems can be fixed, it will be a superb unit. Nothing is worse than having your remote collar act up when you are doing a demo or when you need to fix a behavioral problem.

By: Kolin Powick of , UTThis is a toughy. Overall I LOVE the SD-1825. The range is incredible, I love the vibrate and the beep function, and rarely use the stimulation.
However, I've had some bad luck with it working that long. I'm on my third collar in 2 years. The first one worked for about 6 months... then the vibrate function stopped working. The second one worked about the same length of time, then all features were intermittently working.
I'm on my 3rd one now (great customer service and warranty by the way), and so far so good - hopefully it hangs in there...

Customer support is good, but I did get 3 defective products in a row before I got one that worked and charged consistently. Overall happy, but frustrated with the run of defective collars.

I may of purchased this piece of dog training equipment prematurely. To date I have not had to use to control my new dog "Gus". He will be 3 this October and is a great pet. His favorite game is frisbee, but he will retrieve any toy even dive 9 feet under water in the swimming pool.
I started the program, which begins with having the dog leash broken, eventually substituting in the Sportdog-1825
electronic collar. I thought it would help me train Gus to be a hunting dog too. Access to hunting on the Chesapeake for waterfowl has become quite expensive and even more difficult if you want a place to train your own dog. I also suffered a knee injury slowing me down. So Gus is my pet and has not had the opportunity to hunt live birds.

The wide range of stim on this collar made it easy for my owner to find my range--just a nick to refocus my attention on him. It has a nice long range so I can stretch my legs and still be under control. And it's waterproof so I can swim too!

My only complaint at the time was that the batteries seemed to have different lifespans even though they were both new. I never had to favor one dog with training so there was no reason for one battery to run down faster than another, but one collar would last almost a full day longer than the other. I didn't worry about it too much since I knew the batteries were replaceable it really wasn't too big of an inconvenience at the time.
My second issue, however, cropped up about 6 month later when my remote stopped working. I made sure it had a full charge and that the charger was working properly so I called the company. They were nice enough and sent out a new remote which promptly did not work out of the box. The "beeper" button would not work after I had paired it to the collars so I called the company again. They were still nice enough to deal with and they sent me out another remote that has worked for less than 3 months.
Now the beeper button does not work on this unit. In addition, the battery life on the collars is about half of what they were when originally purchased. I have followed the directions to only charge the collars when needed and would remove them as soon as finished and I must say I am amazed at how short the battery life has been. I have worked in the cell phone industry for over 14 years so I am familiar with rechargeable batteries, these just don't seem to hold up. What use to last for 3 days is down 1 - 1 1/2 days on a full charge.
If you would ask me if I would purchase these collars again, I wouldn't, nor would I recommended anyone to purchase this setup. This is no where near the quality that should be in a $500+ product.
As a side note, I use this setup on house dogs and none of the equipment has been abused in any way. I'd be afraid to see how this product would hold up if I actually used it in the field as intended.

I purchased the 1825. The first one lasted a few months then it started having problems with consistency. The receiver wouldn’t work at different ranges; it was very random and frustrating. I called GDS and they worked with me on getting a new set up. About a month later the same thing started happening again so they helped with getting me a great Tri-Tronics System which is more money but it has been perfect. I have had it since 09. Steve and Tri-Tronics will be getting my business because of quality and customer service.

SD 1825 tends to malfunction from time to time. End result, vibrator sends dog a shock, light shock (as a reminder) is often delayed with result of a much worse shock on my dog. Thinking of heading back to Tri-tronics. Wish I could get my money back! Only positive, battery time is not bad!

The stimulation range also doesn't seem to work correctly. It goes from undetectable to jolting my 80 lb Labrador off his feet. I was directed to the manufacturer and verified the settings are correct. They feel it functions properly, but it does not. Obviously, I would not recommend this product or the manufacturer.

Transmitter MODES
The SportDOG 1825 gives you the option of customizing the transmitter to fit YOUR needs. It also allows you the option of changing the stimulation setup as your needs change or if you want different options in different situations.
Modes include Continuous, Momentary, Tone, Vibration, Low Continuous-High Continuous, Low Momentary - High Momentary, 3 dog Mode featuring one button per dog (Continuous or Momentary based on the position of the toggle switch), tone with stimulation delay, +2 jump level, 6 dog mode with Continuous only (dogs 1-3 on toggle up, and dogs 4-6 on toggle down), and a programmable continuous hot button.
Change MODES in seconds by setting the transmitter dial and toggle switch to the mode you want. Next press the recessed

Collar MODES
Another feature in the 1825 collar is the ability to change stimulation settings at the collar. The collar has a low, medium and high setting. Stimulation from the SportDOG SD-1825
The SD-1825 has multiple intensity levels, which allows you to choose the stimulation that is best for your dog.
Eight intensity levels can be quickly adjusted with the dial on the side of the transmitter. This means that you can instantly adjust intensity whenever distractions increase.
Teach yardwork/obedience and enforce known commands with lower levels of stimulation.
Use higher levels to stop unwanted chasing or to overcome strong distractions.
Up to 16 levels of continuous stimulation and 16 levels of momentary stimulation, depending on which mode you choose.
