| NEW! SPORTDOG COLLARS REVIEWED... "I want a transmitter that fits my needs. Not the other way around. I also want it to be easy to operate. If I were a rocket scientist, I wouldn't be selling dog supplies for a living..."
 | | | | | STEVE SAYS: Rugged. Versatile. Affordable. With most remote training collars you
would have to pick two out of three.
The versatile, affordable collars are anything but rugged. The rugged
collars are anything but affordable and are seldom versatile.
I've waited for these new collars since 1998. I never thought it
would have taken 6 years but it did. I also never thought we would
have to have a new company to do it, but here we are.
SportDog introduces two new collars this month that will change the
way you look at a remote training collar for your dog training needs. They
also will not make you break the bank to get a fully waterproof, high
quality, versatile, expandable remote training system.
These new SportDog Collars have combined three features that you cannot find in any
collar in their price range ($239-$279): (1) waterproof transmitters, (2) versatile stimulation settings, and (3) expandable systems so you can add more dogs...

| | | | | Waterproof transmitters
Waterproof transmitter. It's submersible, too! Drop the transmitter in the water, fish it out, and keep on training. Perfect for retriever training.
Maybe you don't need a waterproof transmitter if you hunt in the desert, but I once dropped a water RESISTANT transmitter in a cooler full of icewater. Not a good
feeling when you are 800 miles from the closest mail order company.
Why any company makes a remote system designed for duck hunters that
doesn't have a waterproof transmitter is beyond me. We wear chest
waders for a reason. I don't want anything in a duck blind that I
have to keep dry. It just isn't going to work out in the long run.
I'm also real clumsy. I drop things. It happens.
Versatile Stimulation Settings
It is very difficult to explain to some one how sensitive
their dog might be the first time they use a remote training collar.
You can not tell what a dog will require from a stimulation standpoint
until you work with him.
Why not have a collar that you can change as your needs change? Makes
sense to me.
Do you know what kind of stimulation you prefer to use? I don't like
momentary stimulation. Never have and I probably never will. Does
that make momentary bad? Nope. It just isn't for me. Some people
love it.
But why should it be on my transmitter if I'm not going to use it? It just gets in my way.
I want a transmitter that I can fit to my needs. Not the other way
around. I also want it to be easy to operate. If I were a rocket
scientist, I wouldn't be selling dog supplies for a living...
Expandable System to Add Multiple Dogs Later
I don't like having to make choices on a product today
with out any idea of what my needs will be 6 months from now or 3
years down the road.
Sure you might only have one dog today, but who knows when you might
get that next one? Why should you have to buy a one dog system now?
What if you need to expand it later? You might want to run two dogs
at the same time. Shoot, you might want to run three dogs.
I want to be able to add dogs to my collar system as my needs change. I don't want to
have to sell my old system or send it in to have it altered. I also
don't want it to cost a fortune.
Another advantage of the new SportDog collars comes in the way that
you program the collars and the transmitter.
Because you can add a collar at any time, you can also replace lost components.
It doesn't happen that often, be we hear from folks that lose their
transmitter or collar.
With most of the collars on the market today, you have to have a unit
built to replace the one that you lost. With SportDog collars, you can replace either transmitters or collars at anytime. The advantage here is less downtime from your training and hunting.
Backwards compatible Another advantage with the SportDog system is that folks that have
bought older models of these collars (SD 1200 and SD 2400) can buy
these new systems and use their older collars with the new
transmitter.
If you bought a SD 1200 or SD 2400 and now want the improved features
in the Sportdog SD 1800
or Sportdog SD 2000 you can buy the one dog system and use your
old collar as the second dog turning your new system into a two dog
set up.
Picking between the SD 1800 and the SD 2000
These collars are very similar, but there are a few differences that
may make you want to get one unit over the other.
The obvious difference is how they look. The Sportdog SD 1800
has
a black transmitter with a yellow facing. The toggle switch has color
selections for an orange collar and a black collar. The collar that
comes with the one dog unit has a black receiver and an orange collar
strap. The AddA-Dog collar will come with a black strap for dog
two and a green strap for dog 3. The collar straps are removable so if you want to change out the
straps you can but you do not have to.
The Sportdog SD 2000 Wetland Hunter comes in the Realtree MAX 4 camo pattern.
The Transmitter is camo, the collar strap is camo and the collar
receiver is camo. The hardware on the camo strap is a matte finish
black so it does not have any shiny parts for the sun to give away
your position.
The SD2000 is designed for duck hunters but you can use the SD 1800
on a retriever if you do not want a camo pattern unit.
The biggest difference between these units is in the collar. The Sportdog SD 2000 comes with a "high" power collar while the Sportdog SD 1800
comes with a
"standard" power collar. This makes the SD 2000 stimulation stronger
from the lowest setting up. As a general rule retrievers are less
sensitive to stimulation compared to many breeds so the higher power
collar makes sense in this unit.
The high powered collar level one is the same as the "standard" power
level 2. This means that the standard collar on the SD1800
starts one
level lower than the high powered Sportdog SD2000. The high powered collar goes
one level higher than the standard collar so you have more top end if
you need it.
The last major difference between these units is in the number of dogs
that you can control from the transmitter. The SD2000 comes as a one
dog system and you can add one additional dog at any time making it a
two dog system.
The Sportdog SD1800
comes as a one dog system and you can add up to two
additional dogs at any time making it either a one, two or three dog
system. All of the functions work for the one or two dog selection.
When you go to a three dog set up, you are limited to mode 7 (eight
levels of continuous and eight levels of momentary) with each dog
having a separate button for stimulation selection.
These are the only differences in these units. All other features are the same.
These terms apply to the 2005 Sportdog Collars.
Remote Transmitter: Transmits the radio signal to the Collar Receiver. It is waterproof and can be
submerged in water.
Transmitter Indicator Light: Indicates that a button is pressed and also serves as a low-battery indicator.
Intensity Dial: Provides a choice of 8 levels of stimulation so you can match the correction to your dogs
temperament.
Upper Button: This button is factory-set to deliver continuous stimulation.
Lower Button: This button is factory-set to deliver momentary stimulation, or a Nick.
Side Button: This switch is factory-set to deliver a tone without stimulation.
Toggle Switch: This switch is factory-set so that the Remote Transmitter can control two Collar
Receivers. When the Remote Transmitter is programmed for three Collar Receivers, it switches the signals
from Continuous Stimulation to Momentary Stimulation.
Collar Receiver: Receives the radio signal from the Remote Transmitter. It is waterproof and can be
submerged in water.
Receiver Indicator Light: Indicates when the Collar Receiver has been turned on or off and also serves
as a low-battery indicator.
Contact Points: The contacts through which the Collar Receiver delivers stimulation when a Remote
Transmitter button programed for Continuous or Momentary Stimulation is pressed.
Charging Jacks: For connecting the charger. Although the Collar Receiver is waterproof
without it, keep
the cover in place when not charging to keep debris out of the opening.
On/Off Button: Momentarily pressing and holding this button turns the Collar Receiver on and off.
Continuous Stimulation: When a button is programmed for Continuous Stimulation, you control both
when and how long stimulation is delivered to your dog through the Collar Receivers Contact Points.
When a continuous stimulation button is pressed for 8 seconds or more, the Remote Transmitter will
time-out. The button will need to be released and pressed again before additional stimulation can be
delivered.
Momentary (Nick) Stimulation: When a button is programmed for Momentary Stimulation,
stimulation is delivered for 5/100 of a second, regardless of how long the button is pressed. |
