Want Your Dog to Go Through Doorways with More Self Control? Here's How.

Plus, it stops that frustrating and sometimes dangerous behavior of bolting out of open doors. I often start teaching this Wait behavior when getting the dog out of the kennel. It is a good place to begin instilling the lesson of patience, and often easier on us because exiting the kennel typically isn't as exciting as exiting the house. Plus, the crate opening is smaller than a regular door, and therefore easier for me to maintain control if the dog is trying to push past. While working with Cody, a young Chocolate lab, we decided to shoot a bit of footage while teaching him to exit the kennel in a calm and controlled manner. He wasn't over the top in his behavior as some dogs are, but you can get the idea of how you can teach this with your own dog. Plus you can see how simple it is to develop better focus on you at doorways. Teaching your dog to wait for a permission cue to move forward is valuable in all sorts of situations. Remember to use the movement of the door, your body positioning and the e-collar to help enthusiastic pooches learn to wait at openings so they can calm down and you can have them exit with more control. Note: You can teach this behavior with either the cue to "Wait" or you can build the concept of patience and permission into the "Kennel" command just as we did with the Place command in our e-collar training DVD .
