Let's talk about what's new in the new Alpha series of collars. We have two new collars: the T20, which is a tracking-only collar, and the TT25, which is both a tracking and training collar. There are several new features in these new collars, the first one being dynamic updates. In previous generations of collars, update rates were set to a standard set time. The new collars have standard set update rates, but they also offer the option of a dynamic update rate. In an effort to conserve battery life, the dynamic update rate will decrease the frequency of updates to the handheld when the dog is motionless. This extends the battery life, giving you up to 68 hours of battery from a single charge. The next new feature is multicolored running lights. On previous models, we've had running lights that you could control from the handheld, which allowed you to turn them on and off if your dogs were running, especially in low light conditions or at night. These new collars now give you seven different color options so you can identify your dogs in the dark by changing their light color. These new Garmin collars allow you to change the flex bands. In the past, the flex band contained a wire going to the GPS antenna. In these new T-series collars, the flex band can be easily switched out in the field by removing just two screws, decreasing downtime. The multicolored status light is a major upgrade on these new T-series collars. The status light flashes in the center of the collar when it's turned on, and the color indicates what your collar is doing:
  • Yellow: searching for GPS signal
  • Green: acquired GPS signal
  • Blue: pairing mode
  • Red: low battery
  • Having the multicolored status light makes it easier to look at your collar and tell when it's ready to use. The TT25 and T20 come in one standard size and are smaller than previous regular collars. (Garmin does not offer MINI and regular sizes of these.) They are sized so they will fit most dogs really well. It's not so small that it's going to be a problem on a large dog, yet it's not so big it's going to cause a problem with smaller beagles. Automatic WiFi updates are a great new feature. You can sync the collars to your home WiFi network using your Alpha 300 handheld, and when you put the collars on the charger, they will go online and check to see if there are any updates. Then, they automatically install the new updates. This will save you a lot of time and keep you from wondering if there's a new update.
