In The Conditioned Retrieve Part 1: Focusing the Retrieving Instinct, learn to convert your dog's playful puppy retrieves into adult action that you control. This transition is the cornerstone of any solid training program and fortifies your dog's understanding of his responsibilities in the field. It's also the most difficult phase of training your dog will ever encounter. Professional retriever trainer Dan Hosford simplifies the process with easy-to-follow, detailed instruction. Most of these exercises take place indoors, laying the foundation for the next Working Man's Retriever DVD, The Conditioned Retrieve Part 2: Sharpening Your Dog's Focus.
Using inexperienced dogs who are learning the skills for the first time, Hosford shows you how to:
Load your dog into a standing table
Properly use an electronic collar
Get your dog to respect and obey the verbal commands fetch, hold, drop, and back
Nearly three hours of training, broken into progressive, easy-to-follow sequences
Icons that reveal when electrical stimulation is in use
Slow-motion, instant replay for complex sequences
Troubleshooting for common problems
In-depth, step-by-step instructions that train you and your dog
Real-life, in-the-moment training footage
Inexperienced dogs that are going through the program for the first time
Dan Hosford's career as a dog trainer, like so many of the world's great starts, was born of necessity. For him, he simply wanted to easily retrieve the birds he harvested. At the time (in the late 1960s), he lived in Idaho's northern panhandle. Duck hunting was in its prime there but despite being an avid hunter, Hosford hadn't tried it yet. One day, a friend invited him to give it a go. The two had everything prepared (or so it seemed) until they were actually trying to collect the downed birds. Even with waders on, they got wet, cold and just plain uncomfortable. Their conversations delved into, "There's gotta be a better way." And there was. Later that day, they watched as a man coached a dog to retrieve a bird, and Hosford's involvement with hunting dogs began.
Since that initial introduction and after subsequent years of self-teaching, reading, and trial and error, Hosford started training other people's dogs. "I began incorporating more dog psychology into my training program and found far greater success," he said. "To this day, I still base my entire program for both upland and waterfowl hunting on a solid foundation of obedience and dog psychology."
He's had more than 35 years to practice. He excels at teaching the "Conditioned Response to Retrieve" (aka Force Fetch) and many of his clients come to him with this problem. They rely on his quiet, confident style to bring their dogs to the required level. He communicates clearly what he's doing and why he's doing it so that owners walk away fully educated.
He has titled five 1,000 point Grand Master Hunting Retriever Champions (GMHRCH), plus hundreds of Intermediate and Started dogs in the North American Hunting Retriever Association (NAHRA) program. Plus, he's competed in six NAHRA Richard Wolters Invitationals, qualifying 14 dogs. In the equivalent American Kennel Club (AKC) hunt tests, he has titled one Master, three Seniors and numerous Juniors. He has sat on several NAHRA committees and was tapped twice by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) to hold retriever demonstrations at RMEF's American Outdoor Experience in Bristol, Tennessee.
In addition to running his training facility, Hosford and his wife, Janette, operate a kennel in Spokane, Washington.
