It's not fancy. It's a 7.5 ft. piece of stiff piggin' string — the same material cowboys use to rope calves — with a rubber stopper that sets the loop size. That's it. No batteries. No settings. No timing required.
Here's why it works: the stiffness gives your dog instant feedback the moment he drifts out of position. When he's where he's supposed to be, it loosens up. When he's not, it tells him. You don't have to have great hands or perfect technique. The lead does the work for you.

A Few Things Worth Knowing
- Wear gloves. The piggin' string is stiff and rough on bare hands, especially with a strong dog.
- Position it high — behind the ears, not down around the neck.
- Keep the lead loose. If the rope is tight, the dog isn't learning.

Using the included illustrated instructions, you can encourage boldness in a shy dog or decrease boldness in a bold dog. Great for pointing breeds, retrievers, show, obedience, or family dogs. Made of durable, flexible plastic. (Charles Jurney calls the Wonder Lead an "EZ Lead" in his book, Finished Dog.) Over time, the rubber stopper will turn the rope black as it rubs against it. This is normal.
Using the included "Red Head" with your Wonder Lead:
The rubber stopper on the Delmar Smith Wonder Lead will wear out over time. When this happens, the stopper will not allow you to set the distance that the lead will open up. To keep the stopper functional, we have included a plastic bushing called a "Red Head." Installation: Simply place the Read Head onto the lead and slip the stopper over it, where the flange of the Red Head is flush with one side of the stopper (see photos). Remove the small "flag" tab on the Red Head to prevent snagging on the Wonder Lead. Note: You do not necessarily have to wait for the stopper to wear down to utilize the Red Head. Upon receiving the Wonder Lead you can slide the stopper up and down on the lead enough to create space for it to fit over the Red Head.Price: 34.95

STEVE: This is the Delmar Smith Wonder Lead. It's the best money you are ever going to spend for training a dog. It's made out of what's called piggin' string, which is a cowboy thing. It's a real stiff rope. It's used to teach a dog mainly to heel. The idea behind it is that you've got this rubber stopper, and that when the dog is where he's supposed to be it's going to loosen up on him. It gives a really fast response. When you are trying to teach your dog heeling and he moves out too far or backs up too much, it responds really quickly. You don't have to have the right reaction time. It's going to do the work for you. Just one of the simplest ways to teach a dog to heel. I've been using them for about 10 years now. When I first heard about them I clearly remember saying, "I don't know if that's the right thing for me. Not really sure." But I saw Rick use one once at one of his seminars. And it was just sort of like a light turned on for me. Just a really neat device. It's a major part of Rick and Ronnie's Silent Command System. It's a key part to it. If you are using that system to train your dog, I highly recommend that you get a Wonder Lead. We include what they call these little red tops. What's eventually going to happen is that over time this little stopper is going to wear down. So we include this. It's a little device that you slide up into here once it gets worn down. That's going to increase the life of it. This is just something we throw in for folks. I just absolutely love my Wonder Leads. I carry them with me wherever I go. It takes the place of a leash for me. One thing I like to point out is that because it is stiff, I typically like to be wearing gloves when I'm using it. You can use it without gloves, but you are going to regret it at a certain point. It's one of those things that when I'm working a dog with it, gloves are a major factor. But the Delmar Smith Wonder Lead is a neat tool. Highly recommend it. We use them in our training and I recommend that you try it out in yours.
