Useful for introducing pups to birds and for retrieving work.
There are probably as many ways to use a quail harness as there are trainers but most
use it to introduce a pointing breed pup to quail (pen-raised) in a controlled situation.
One way is to place the quail in the harness and tie (or snap) a string to the Dee ring
on top of the quail harness and tie the string to a fishing pole, fly rod etc. Plant the quail in
cover and bring the pup in on a check cord from down wind (or cross wind) - restrain the pup with the check cord when
he scents it (its easier to tell when the pup first hits scent from cross wind) and lift the quail up with the fishing
pole and let it flutter a bit - return it to cover, pick the pup up to get him away from the scent while a helper
places the quail in another location.
Some trainers working alone use a long pole, let the quail flutter and then cover the pup's eyes with a hand and
toss the pole and quail into cover several feet away and then pick the pup up and bring him into the area with the
newly planted quail from down wind (or cross wind). Usually 3 repetitions in one training session will be enough
for a young pup. You don't want to over do it. Of course, you could have 2-3 sessions in a day if you spread
them out so that the pup has a break between sessions.
