BEST-SELLER.

The rugged Astro DC 40 collar / transmitter is a complete stand alone unit.

The DC 40 is an improved designed based of the popular DC 30 collar.

The DC 40 is a self-contained transmitter. It incorporates the GPS antenna / receiver, battery and electronics into one unit.

Garmin has eliminated the multiple parts of the DC 30 and combined everything into one durable smaller package. It does away with the wires that connected the GPS Antenna to the electronics. This allows the unit to be mounted on a standard plastic coated nylon collar strap.

The DC 40 Astro collar has a Whip Style RF antenna that will take all the abuse a hunting dog can give it.

The DC 40 is built tough to handle the rough terrain where your dog hunts, and it doesn't require the use of any additional counterweight, ecollar, or vest to keep the unit on the dog. Just buckle it on and go!

The new compact design of the DC 40 will also allow you the option of mounting both the DC 40 and most standard remote training collars on the same strap. eliminating the need for two straps if you run both an ecollar and the Garmin Astro on your dog.

New Charging Cradle

The DC 40 now comes with a charging cradle that snaps on to the DC 40. This new design eliminates the grooves that allowed dirt and mud to collect in the earlier versions of these collars and made charging difficult.

The DC 40 also has a system of blue lights that blink while the collar is charging and glow solid after it is finished charging. You snap your collar into the cradle and plug it up, the light will blink blue. Once it is fully charged, the light will glow solid blue.

"Collar Lock" PIN system

A new feature that has been added to the DC 40 is the option of putting a "password" protection feature on your collars.

The new "Collar Lock" feature allows you to block other people from being able to track your dog. You select a 4 digit code that the users hand held will require you to enter before it will allow anyone to track your GPS collar.

"Collar Lock" is a pull down selection that you can set on your collar if you want it. It is not required to use the DC 40, and it is easy to reset if you want to change it or stop using it.

2 Minute Update Rate

The Astro DC 40 also has a new update rate that is designed to extend battery life. The Update Rate is the time between location information being sent from the DC 40 collar to your hand held receiver. The quicker the update rate the more information you have on where your dog is and what he is doing.

Previous generations of the Astro have allowed update rates of 5 seconds, 10 seconds and 30 seconds. The DC 40 has those updates and it also has a 2 minute (120 seconds) option. This longer update rate is designed for the dog owner that wants the longest possible battery life (48 hours) and is willing to sacrifice location detail to get it.

Transcript from Steve's Video:

This is the Garmin Astro DC-40. This is the 3rd generation of the Garmin Astro collars. It's a GPS receiver that your dog wears. It picks up information from the satellites. And then it broadcasts that signal using its RF antenna back to your handheld to give you the location of your dog.

Pretty complex device to be worn on a dog, but they do a great job. They're tough. They hold up real well. We've got a new design on the antenna that is more durable than some we've seen in the past. Great little unit. We seldom have trouble out of them nowadays.

It's compact. It's got your battery, everything that you need. It is designed to be worn separately. Some folks will attach on e-collar to this device. I'm not a big fan of doing that. I would rather that be on a separate collar.

But the DC-40, they hold up really well. We've had real good luck with them. A far as a GPS only collar, this is one of my favorites ones out there.

The DC-40, to get a full charge it's going to take about four hours. It comes with a charger, clips on. Fully drained battery it will take you about four hours.

There are different update rates. The update rate is how often the collar sends a signal back to the handheld. That determines your battery life. The quickest update with this is a five second update. The five second update we get between 20 and 24 hours of runtime. That's straight runtime.

If you lower your update rate where it's sending information back to the handheld in a 10 second or 15 second increment, or a 30 second, or even the long, which is 120 seconds, you can get longer battery life. The downside of that is that the information that you have at the handheld has bigger gaps in it. So it really depends on what you're doing.

I run all of my dogs with a five second update and I just keep track of my battery life. I watch it pretty close. Every day when I'm through running a collar, that night I stick it on the charger so I have a full charge the next day.

The DC-40 works with a 320 handheld. You can expand a 320 handheld up to 10 dogs. We have 10 different colored collar straps you can order. They come free with the system, but that way you can identify your dogs based off of color and have a different color for each strap.

Each DC-40 collar comes with a charging clip, a wall charger, and a car charger.

Hunts. I would not go hunting without it. It keeps me on top of my hounds when they get out of hearing distance. I hunt in the hills, and it will track my hounds over two miles. Great tracking system. The only problem I have seen with the DC40, is the antenna will break on them.

Owns 3 dogs. Hunts. Competes. This is the very best thing that I have ever bought for my dogs, in my life. I run my older dog with my youngest. She's imprinting all the good aspects that the older dog ever had. I can now run them at the same time and relax. My 2nd DC-40 keeps a constant track of both dogs. It's above and beyond my expectations. For anyone with multiple hard going dogs, this device is a must! I can't begin to tell you what a load off my mind this is. Bob Koser

Owns 5 dogs. Hunts. I have owned the Astro about a year now. I bought 2 more collars because of two reasons. I can't get good dogs to replace these, and since we hunt hogs, and they run sometimes 2 miles, if we didn't have the DC40 we couldn't find them. They have never let us down, and Garmin has excellent service.

Hunts. Transmitter is great. The 320 has really crappy battery life, no matter what I do! On hunts I always have my old 220 with me, and leave the 320 in the car. I hunt boar in Germany and go on about 40 all day hunts with my dogs. With the 220 I can go 2 days without charging. With the 320, I have to bring extra batteries with me on the first day, and change them out! That sucks

By: Crystal I.

They truly are the way to go with keeping track of all your dogs at the same time. We hog hunt with them, and we can tell if they are on the move, and where they have been, or sitting in the same place. GPS is user friendly. I have only had a couple problems with the collars losing signal with the GPS. However, Garmin Tech replaced the collar if it wasn't repairable. Overall, I would strongly recommend these to any hunter.

Owns 15 dogs. Hunts. The DC 30 has twice the range, and is a much better made collar. The DC 40 will not pick up nearly as far as the DC30. I will have as many as 8 dogs running deer at one time. The DC 30 never loses a signal, or loses it for a very short time. The DC 40 will lose the signal within the first 1/2 mile and is very hard to catch up to. They should have left the gps unit on the top of the collar, so it can always pick up a good signal.
