Super Dog Den Houses Reviewed: January 5, 2010
By: Ron CooperSteve,
I have 2 of your dog houses now. The other morning it was 9 degrees here and I decided to check the temperature in your houses compared to the metal houses I had. When I went into the pen, the dog came out of my old house and I immediately shot the temperature where she was lying and it was 30 degrees. I walked in the next pen where I had your dog house and shot the temperature with my temperature gun and it was 51 degrees. As I said, it was 9 degrees that morning and there was 21 degrees difference in your house than my metal house. Needless to say, I bought another one and will replace them as needed with your super den houses. A fine product in my opinion.
Thanks,
Ron Cooper

Actual product is great-after the first one I thought the 90% assembled was a bunch of hooey...more like 90% assembly needed. After the second one, I realized its really not so bad. It was all ready to go in about 10 minutes. Great dog house-insulation is great for the super cold temps of Salmon, ID.

The Dog Den 2 is great! It kept our dog nice and warm all winter long, even in temperatures down in the single digits! She also stays dry during the wind and rain with the flip up kennel door and the protective sides. It's a great dog house, I would highly recommend! It's nice to know she's safe, warm, dry and secure when you are away...great piece of mind!
Didn't like - having to purchase and install the pressure treated base.
Like - everything else - Great to Clean - EXTREMELY Durable - Dogs love it! Dry! We have tried Barrels and these are hands down a MUCH better system. The drop door can be up or down, has a cover over the door that helps keep out rain. It's insulated and the dogs like it inside during both hot weather and cold. Some dogs have chewed every other kennel, but can't chew this one.
The removable top to gain access is a real plus. Great product! (And I don't easily give out glowing reviews)

Great House!
My 35lbs French Brit survied some of the coldest days on record in minnesota last winter. I was out of town and the wife was taking care of "my" dog when the temp diped well below -30 deg F. with some straw as bedding Frankee never knew the differance.
these houses assemble easy and are the best quality of anyplace I looked at. they also make a great place for the dog to sit up off the ground on top of the house. my dog loves naping on the top of the house and can because of the great insulation in these houses even the top seems to provide a great place to sit on a cold day.
In the same kennel I have one of those Igloo style house and the staw inside of that was a mess this spring all the snow melts right down inside of it and causes a pool of water. the Dog den's bedding was as dry as the day I put it in after one of the tougest winters on the books "we had lots of snow!"
one this I will say is use a grass or straw bedding and dont use blankets they jam the door up.

Outstanding product, this is the last dog house you will need to buy. Our Dog Den 2 has been outside in the high desert for five years and looks brand new, with no issues what so ever. Previous to purchasing the Dog Den 2 our dog destroyed the first two "plastic" dog houses in less than a year, the Dog Den is undamaged due to its chew proof design. I would, and have reccomended this product to anyone with a high energy dog.

It is a very sturdy design that has held up well for years and the dogs can't chew on it anywhere. They stay inside it when it's cold and get on top of it in the summer. I also use the hound heaters. I attach the heater through the back wall, secure the house to the back fence of the kennel with wire, and place the cord in flexible metal conduit to prevent chewing on electric wiring. The dogs all did well in them down to 3 degrees F here this last winter.

I really like this product and so does my dog. it was easy to assemble and the dog loves it. I line the inside with pine shavings which make a nice soft bed. During the summer I keep the door open for increased ventilation. In winter months I don\'t worry about my spaniel being warm enough. I live in upstate New York. When he comes out his body and coat are a comfortable temperature. He\'s outside about 10 hours a day while I am at work. It\'s an esay product to keep sanitized and finally it is destruction proof. My dog went through the typical chewing months and he could do no damage to this product. I recommend it highly.

I have 3 of the Dog Den 2's that the dogs use in summer and winter here in Michigan. They do a good job of keeping the dogs warm in winter with the optional heating pad. 2 of my larger setters often double up in one of the Dog Dens. They also seem to keep the dogs cool in the summer with the doors propped open. I often find the dogs lying inside the Dog Dens during the summer (the Dog Dens are in the shade most of the day).
Only con in my opinion that keeps them from getting an excellent rating -- I have to be vigilent in spraying the Dog Dens off several times during the day, as the urine from the male dogs rusts the trim. I hear and read about the rusting complaints alot from Dog Den ownwers.

I bought 4 Dog Den 2s, and for the most part Ive very satisfied. Two of them are used for females, and the other males. I painted them as you suggested, but one of them is starting to show some effects of urine on the lower back cornerthis happens to be the newest house. I also think the galvanized corner pieces that cover the 2x4 frames are too thinthey all show signs of rust. I also recommend more substanial snaps/clips to hold the roof in place. The ones that were provided are definately too fragile.

We own 10 dog den 2 dog houses and are fairly happy with them. They are very well insulated, the doors are fantastic, and they're the proper size. The security buckles holding the top on are very poor. They definitely do not last more than a few months before they are inoperable and rusted. Another fault in the design is the base design which is left up to the consumer to purchase and install. The design and use of the 2x4's does not create a passage for easy cleaning when these dog houses are utilized in kennels. My suggestion for a perfect dog den 2 would be to upgrade the latches holding the top on and offering some type of chew proof legs that would bolt to the 4 corners of the floor providing an easier and more sanitary means of cleaning. These 2 changes would dramatically improve the quality, functionality, and overall longivity of this dog house.

Steve,
This is the most expensive dog house I've ever purchased and it's rusted out after not even a couple of years wherevever there was exposed galvanized. Geesh, for that price they could have used stainless and still made a healthy profit. An absolute piece of garbage and not worth the almost $300 I paid for it. I really feel ripped off.
Protect your dog with the Ultimate Dog House,
the Dog Den 2
Steve has been using these DOG DEN 2 metal dog houses for YEARS.
FREE SHIPPING - Allow 1-2 weeks for delivery.
The Dog Den 2 accommodates up to a 110 lb. dog. It is 34 x 22 x 22 inches tall, providing a 4.5" lip on the doorway to keep bedding inside. This strong unit can support over 200 lbs on the roof and only weighs 40 lbs, so it is relatively easy for someone to move around.
The removable top and floor makes cleaning a simple task! The unique 12"x15" metal door provides easy access for most dogs up to 110 lbs. The optional support frame requires one 8' treated 2 X 4 - not included.
Super Insulated: 27% more insulation than any other manufactured dog house. We put more insulation where it's most needed, in the ceiling, one full inch of insulating foam. Wall and floor are 3/4 inch foam sandwiched between two plastic layers.
UV protected plastic wall and interior: The UV protected exterior will protect your dog for years. Nothing to rot and it's easy to clean and disinfect.
Removable lid: The lid removes easily for cleaning and to change bedding.
Chew Proof: Your dog cannot chew this dog house.
Roomy: Dog Den 2 measures 34" wide x 22" deep x 22" high. Interior measures 32 1/2" wide x 20 1/2" deep x 20 1/4" high.
4.5-inch Door Lip: Keeps bedding inside better than any competitor.
Popular "Kennel Door": Swings both ways and locks open for summer ventilation. No chewable flaps that channel water inside for our customers. Even stops wind driven rain.
Strong and Lightweight: The most abusive dog can't hurt the Dog Den 2.
Easy Assembly: All Dog Den 2 units come 90% factory assembled. The optional support frame requires one 8' treated 2 X 4 - not included.
5-Year Manufacturer Guarantee: K-9 Kondo will replace any part that fails due to defect or chewing for 5 years from time of purchase.
Step 1 -- Construct a support frame from pressure treated 2 x 4 lumber as shown in fig. 1. (C = 21.75" B = 26.75" A= 17.75"-part A is on the door side) fig.2 (A=29.75" B=26.75" C=33.5") Use a screwdriver to lift the five (some models have 6) metal floor tabs to form a right angle with the floor. Attach parts A & C to the floor by inserting one of the 14 sheet metal screws through each tab into the wood as shown in fig. 1. Insert one deck screw through parts C & A into part B. Attach the chew guards to the ends of the 2 x 4 lumber using two sheet metal screws on each chew guard as shown in fig. 3. Do not over tighten.
Step 2 -- Attach the door/cowl assembly to the front side of the door plate (fig. 4) with ten # 10 x 32 x 3/8" machine bolts lock washers, and nuts. Do not fully tighten the bolts. Insure that the door swings freely without striking the front plate before fully tightening. If the door strikes the door plate on the right, raise the left side of the assembly. Conversely, raise the right side if it is striking on the left side. APPLY SOME SILCONE LUBRICANT BETWEEN THE HINGE PIN AND RUBBER BUSHING MONTHLY. REPEAT THIS STEP MORE OFTEN IF THE DOOR RECEIVES HEAVY USE.
Step 3 -- Following the instructions on the package to install the weather strip gasket as shown
in fig. 5.
Step 4 -- Place the lid on the Dog Den. Allow the latch to hang from the latch strike that is attached to the left and right sides of the lid. Mark the location of the bottom hole of the latch on the wall with an ink pen or pencil. Attach the latch to the wall by inserting one of four self tapping screws in the bottom hole at the spot marked. Insert one self tapping screw into the top hole. Fig. 6.
Note -- Use high quality grass hay for bedding (prairie, marsh, timothy, or brome grass hay). DO NOT USE PILLOWS OR BLANKETS AS THEY CAN JAMB THE DOOR CLOSED. Grass hay makes a better nest and does not crush as easily as straw which provides better insulation under your dog. Wood chips; straw, clover, and alfalfa are poor bedding alternatives. Change bedding often.
The rubber door bushings are a consumable part, much like tires on an automobile, that is not covered under the manufacturer's warranty. Lubricate them often with silicone lubricant to increase serviceability.
K-9 Kondo Manufacturer Q&A
Q. Why have you decided to make another Dog Den style doghouse?
A. Everyday we received pleas to build Dog Dens. Based on the obvious interest shown in the product we decided to redesign the Dog Den to withstand shipping damage.
Q. Will the "Dog Den 2" ship better than the original Den?
A. Yes. Three of the corners have been replaced with 4 inch radii. Therefore, when the box is dropped on it's corner there is nothing to bend. Also, the new Den is lighter and has a plastic exterior wall that will not permanently bend when dropped.
Q. Have you added any improvements to the product?
A. Several. We have doubled the amount of insulation in the ceiling, increased the wall and floor insulation by 50% and made it lighter. The exterior wall is ultra-violet ray resistant and makes for a cooler interior in summer. Fewer parts are involved in assembly due to the foam sandwich wall construction.
Q. Will the Dog Den 2 keep my dog warm?
A. Yes! No other manufacturer makes a warmer doghouse. Our closest competitor uses only foam insulation in the ceiling and walls, and none in the floor. By replacing corners with radii much wasted space is eliminated, wasted space that your dog could not use but had to heat.
Q. What are the dimensions of the Dog Den 2 and the Super Den 3?
A. Dog Den 2 measures 34 " long x 22 " wide x 22 " tall. The Super Den 3 is 34 " long x 34 " wide x 24 " tall.
Q. Why is your door better than flaps or other doors?
A. Flaps are chewable and seldom last more than a few days. Moreover, they actually channel rain inside a doghouse and they can not be locked open to provide shade and additional rain protection. Although some doors seal tighter, they don't provide a rain shield, can not be locked open without modification, and just like flaps, channel rain water into the dog house. The Kennel Door stops rain, locks open for superior rain protection and channels rain away from the interior. The Kennel Door is standard equipment with the Dog Den 2. You pay extra to add a door to any other manufactured doghouse. In ten years and with more than 50,000 Kennel doors in use, not one has been returned due to chewing.
Q. What is involved in completing the 90% assembled Dog Den 2?
A. The door assembly must be attached with ten bolts, nuts, and lock washers. Wood 2x4 (not included) skids must also be attached to the floor. All the necessary fasteners are included.
Q. How much assembly is required in assembling the Dog Den 2?
A. It all depends upon your ability to follow instructions. An electric drill, 1/8, 5/32 and 3/8 inch drill bit, pliers, utility knife, and pop rivet tool are required. Two hours or less of assembly time is very realistic.
Q. Can I wash the Dog Den 2?
A. Dog Dens are completely washable and dry out in a matter of minutes. The floor can be removed to allow water to drain. It's also easy to disinfect.
Q. Does the Dog Den 2 sweat in cold weather?
A. No! Frost or condensation will form on the door but the walls, floor, and ceiling remain free of moisture.
Q. Can the lid be blown off in heavy wind?
A. I suppose it's possible, if the wind velocity is very high. However, the lid is secured by three spring latches and has survived wind gusts of 60 MPH during thunder storms at the K-9 Kondo factory in Nebraska.
Q. How deep is the door lip or barrier?
A. The lip or door barrier is four inches high and retains bedding inside very well.
Q. What is the wall made of?
A. The core of the wall is a flexible 1 inch thick insulating foam that is sandwiched between two layers of 1/16 inch recycled plastic. The exterior wall is treated to withstand ultra-violet rays and will last for years.
Q. How big of a dog can use the Dog Den 2?
A. The two dogs you see in the advertisement weigh 70 and 90 pounds. Both are shown inside in the top right photo, a tight fit, but it shows that a really large dog fits nicely in the Dog Den 2. The perfect size doghouse allows enough room for a dog to enter, turn around, and curl up. Any area larger than this creates excess space for the dog to heat. Too many people want a doghouse that is far too large for their dog.
Q. Does bedding have to be used?
A. We strongly recommend the use of high quality hay for bedding in cold climates. In warmer climes rubber and grass mats work well. Your dog will remain warm on the floor regardless if bedding is used as it is insulated with 1 inch foam. However, loose bedding and mats will give your dogs more cushion and comfort.
Q. What type of warranty does K-9 Kondo offer?
A. K-9 Kondo will replace any part that fails due to chewing or defect. Customers are responsible for the cost of shipping, or can pick it up at the K-9 Kondo factory without cost. The hinge bushings are not covered as their wear depends on the amount of use. K-9 Kondo will replace these at the nominal cost of $2.00 postpaid for two bushings, and 50 cents for each additional bushing. Regular lubrication with grease will extend the life of the bushing considerably.
