As a general rule, I hate change. When something works, I don't like to mess with it.
The DELTA family replaces the Tri-Tronics Sport Basic / Sport Combo. The Sport Basic has been our #1 selling dog training collar for seven years running. The SPORT BASIC works. They are dependable dog training collars, and people really like them. I know when I ship you one, it isn't likely to come back because it's built tough and will do the job.
I knew when Garmin purchased Tri-Tronics back in 2011 that the SPORT BASIC would be the first thing to go. While Tri-Tronics liked to move in a slow and predictable fashion, Garmin likes to revamp its products at a pace that's hard to match.
The Sport Basic came out in 2006, and has not changed in 8 years. You don't see that too often from an electronics company.
Garmin thinks two to three moves ahead of most companies, and likes to make its own products obsolete before somebody else does it for them. For example, Garmin GPS units often have a shelf life of months, not years. Garmin is always improving, and changing, and testing, and trying new things. This rapid change has been a bit of a culture shock for many of us in the remote dog training collar industry, but I couldn't be happier.
This is the Delta Sport. It's the first collar made by Garmin, based off of the Tri-Tronics line of sport collars. Delta Sport is a three-quarter mile range system. It has up to 36 levels of stimulation, both continuous and momentary. It has tone. It has vibration. It also has a bark mode. So you've got a pretty wide range of things here in an intro collar.
Very reasonable price. Good size. It's going to fit in the hand really well. It's expandable up to three dogs with an LCD screen. You move from dog, to dog, to dog.
What's nice about this setup is that you can have different stimulation levels for each dog. So if you have a dog that requires low level stimulation, you can set that. When you move to your second dog you can have a higher level. You have different modes as far as the way the buttons are set up. And so, the configuration can be different with each dog.
And then you also have a bark limiter mode where you can take your e-collar and move it into a bark mode. This allows you to remotely change your collar over from a training collar to a bark collar. If you have a dog in the backyard that has a barking issue, you can set it up in bark mode. If he starts to dig in the flower beds, all you have to do is press your mode button and move over to a stimulation mode. You can correct him for any of the misbehaviors in the backyard. When you are done you can move back into the bark mode.
Good, small collar. It's going to fit on dogs about 10 pounds and up. Everything is rechargeable. Everything is waterproof. It comes with a one year warranty.
labrador retriever. Owns 2 dogs. Hunts. Family pet. Competes. I have used the previous model for seven years and am pleased with the lighter weight, ease of use and speed of recharging. Well done upgrade!

"Used it twice and already know where the buttons are without looking"
Chocolate Lab. Hunts. Family pet. Waterproof, 3 dog remote, compact size, tone and vibrate features, the distance at which it works, and easy to operate. I have used it twice and already know where the buttons are without looking for quicker corrections of the dog.

"My friends are now considering trading in their current training collars for the Garmin."
1 Yellow Lab / 1 Terrier mix. Owns 2 dogs. Family pet. My little Terrier mix was a little out of control and would NOT come when called...especially if there was a dog or cat on the other side of the fence. After just two days (and one correction at the lowest setting possible), he now is extremely obedient and most times comes with just a call. At worst,, I may have to send a harmless tone or vibration. With the added bark correction feature, my friends are now considering trading in their current training collars for the Garmin.

Doby/ridgeback. Family pet. I need the beep, vibrate, momentary & constant. Training at the dog park is going very quick. Very happy with the sport model. I only wish I could customize button control instead of using one of the 4 or 5 button configurations preloaded into the controller.

"At first, I thought collar was a bit narrow but after using it, not an issue. It doesn't need to be bigger to keep collar in place."
Labrador retriever. Owns 2 dogs. Hunts. Compact light size. At first, I thought collar was a bit narrow but after using it, not an issue. It doesn't need to be bigger to keep collar in place. I love the three buttons and the ability to select from different configurations. Pretty intuitive display and ergonomics. Included bark collar is a nice feature. Battery life very good so far and having a charger that allows both collar and controller to recharged at the same time is nice.

"Can switch between dogs without having to adjust intensity level or correction modes."
Labrador Retrievers. Owns 2 dogs. Competes. What I like: Bark Collar built into it saving need for additional collar.. Can switch between dogs without having to adjust intensity level or correction modes.
What I dislike: Charging wires need to be plugged into transmitter and receiver. A wall mount charging station would be nice to keep work surfaces free. Need to take eye off the dog(s) to make sure the setting are correct. Not too bad but not ideal. A audible announcement of "Dog 1, Dog 2, or Dog 3 would be nice.

lab/chocolate. Hunts. Very good collar, used it through teal season (3 wks day in day out). I don't use the bark portion but I don't have this problem with my current retriever. I would like to be able to change out the prongs to something a bit longer. But none-the-less it still gets the job done. The distance is fine, used it for 300 yrd blind retrieves. It feels rugged enough to last a full season of duck hunting. I'll update this if it doesn't or I have problems later.

"Very happy, well worth the money, and the batteries last way longer than expected"
Black lab. Family pet. Bark feature is not great, the lack of adjustment just makes it lame, also you cant use the correction buttons while in bark mode. By the time you switch modes its too late to correct him. I use the correction buttons and he hardly barks anymore, when he does it is only two barks then he stops. This collar works excellent for training, he is listening better and even stopped him from chasing a bunch of deer into the forrest (saved me from going in after him for hours :D). It took a little time to adjust because his invisible fence collar makes a similar beep so he thought he was supposed to back up every time he heard it, and he began thinking he wasn't going to get a shock from his fence collar, but seems to have figured it out. Glad he isn't trying to...ummm..."dominate" the kids and females anymore lol. Very happy, well worth the money and the batteries last way longer than expected, collar 1 week or more depending on use, i have it on 24/7 and mostly use beep mode, remote 2weeks and counting!

"I really like the Garmin Delta and Delta Sport Dog Training Collars"
Springer Spaniel. Owns 2 dogs. The tone is of no value. I can only hear it if I put it right up to my ear and it is quite out. Neither of my dogs react to it. I need to turn the stimulation quite hight to get any reaction from one of my dogs

"Very good entry level collar. Not a huge fan of the bark limiter mode."
Lab. Hunts. Very good entry level collar. Not a huge fan of the bark limiter mode because it starts off at the lowest setting and works up to a higher setting if the dog keeps barking. By the time the dog can feel the correction it has been barking for some time and doesn't understand the correction.

"Bark collar isn't as responsive as I would - Rest of the collar is very good"
German Shorthaired Pointer. Owns 5 dogs. Hunts. Family pet. Competes. Seems to work well so far for training, I like the features tone and vibrate in one unit. Have not used it in a hunt setting yet, but sure it will be just fine. The lighter/smaller size will be great for the new puppy. Features are easy to use, change, operate. The no bark training feature is nice for dual usage. Did seem to have a bit of delayed response on momentary. Overall, so far pleased with the unit

"Easy to use. Seems well built. Battery holds charge well."
German Shepherd. Family pet. My only complaint is that the contacts are a little too short, so the collar must be very tight, and even then it can be a little spotty in its performance. I find I need to use a higher level to achieve the same correction level as my old TriTronics

"The collar has to be pretty tight around the dogs neck to be effective, and even then, the stimulation isn't entirely consistent due to the leads not making proper contact with the dog's skin."
Coonhound. Hunts. The collar has to be pretty tight around the dogs neck to be effective, and even then, the stimulation isn't entirely consistent due to the leads not making proper contact with the dog's skin. "While I like the system and use it all the time, I seem to use it more for a bark collar than anything else."
German Shepherds,Labs. Owns 7 dogs. Family pet. I was looking for a dual purpose e-collar system and I couldn't wait for the Garmin Delta Sport to arrive. While I like the system and use it all the time I seem to use it more for a bark collar than anything else. I work mostly with German Shepherds and when they are in drive it seems like the collars are a little underpowered for correction. I end up setting it on the max sometimes to stop the behavior. I also find it a little hard to switch between 3 dogs in a timely manner. I have reverted back to my Garmin Alpha for most training purposes.

"My dog has long hair, and the contacts are short, so that could be a factor, as well the breed's stubborn character."
Great Pyreneese. After a lot of testing, I had to send it back. Just didn't work for me. Doesn't stop my dog from barking in bark mode for a long time (3 minutes or more). I tried making it really tight a few times and it still didn't work. My dog has long hair and the contacts are short so that could be a factor as well the breeds stubborn character. It was working as I tested it on my leg but I think it's just not programmed to give enough shock or ?. Worked half the time in training mode with it set on high. Also I ordered 2 collars and one didn't work at all.

"It probably functions as designed, but the intensity of shock is never enough to get my dog to stop barking."
Mixed. Family pet. Bark collar does not work. It probably functions as designed, but the intensity of shock is never enough to get my dog to stop barking (regardless of how loud or duration of barking). I can manually zap her (at about a level of 5) and she stops barking. Therefore I must assume that the bark collar mechanism never gets that high in its escalation.
