What a fantastic product! I'm thrilled with it. It is in her kennel, and my dog chewed the first door up within days, shredding the multi vinyl flaps down to nothing! She hasn't touched the new one! I wish I would have bought it the first time and saved the $80 from the vinyl door! It has kept the kennel so much warmer through the coldest part of the winter. Save your money and by the best one first!

Door/springs heavy duty kind of a challenge at first for our Springer. We were expecting a true double flap that would keep heating and cooling in and bugs out. No provision for a more secure closing. However, our carpenter was able to install and make use of slinging cover. Our carpenter was expecting something less industrial, but that is on the outside so turned out satisfactorily.

"Made from good quality material"

By: D Teeft

Received the door this week, and while they are made from good quality material, I think a little more attention needs to be paid to putting them together at the plant. Of the 5 doors I got, 4 of them have a gap between the top of the plexi and the frame. This doesn't make them weather tight, and you will have to re-drill the holes in the plexiglass to make the hole larger to move the plexi door up to cover the gap. The alignment of the frames was off just below the top of the operating door, making for a poor seal as well, so had to put a thin piece of weather stripping on the sides to seal the door. My doors face the windy side of the kennel that we get the major storms from, so wanted a good seal.

This was the only dog door that my Rotti couldn't tear apart! It is noisy, took him and my Airedale a bit not be afraid of it slamming shut behind them, although it didn't bother my German Shepherd at all. Guess it depends on the dog. Other draw back, it's not air tight by any means. Cold air blows in between where the two doors meet.

By: Jeff Marshall From MN

Hunts. Family pet.
I would have given this door 5 stars, except I also bought the $19.00 door trim kit so that I could install this door into my exterior garage door. The dog door itself is great, but the trim kit is a waste of money. I initially bought the Heavy Duty Dog Door, and trimmed it myself with 3 x 3/4 inch Cedar. The cedar was cheap, it looked nice and worked well on the door. The thin plywood that is in your trim kit is too flexible and hard to make work for a metal paneled door. I do have a suggestion with my complaint. I would have paid an $50.00 or a little more for a solid plastic or polyurethane insert that would wrap around the sharp edges of the door. You could send one for each side that would overlap in the middle. This would make a perfect size hole for the dog door, and you could cut the hole just a hair bigger with some room to ensure that it is level and square. Just something to think about. I would give your customer service and shipping 5 stars; that was all great. Thanks, Jeff Marshall.

Installed this door as a replacement for a flap style door. This door is way better. Keeps out weather, and the dogs adapted to it quickly. It took a bit of adjusting during installation to get it to seal correctly, but that was a minor detail. I can't rate the durability yet. The weakest link in the closure system are the hinge springs.

The top joints on the swinging aluminum panel is a little cockeyed. It looks like a weak point. I am worried that it may stress and break there. Guess time will tell. Having a hard time with the dogs getting used to it. It slams down pretty hard and makes a loud noise that frightens them. I am going to try to get some rubber weatherstrip to cushion the closing. Our male dog is a little shy of it because he tried to follow the female in immediately behind her and got smacked on the nose. We are working with them to wait their turn and let the door slam closed completely before trying to go through.

Good idea, poor craftsmanship. Sorry, but it looked like a ten year old put it together. Glass was crooked and frame wasn't flat. Nice nylock nuts, but bolts were not long enough to engage. Only two mounting holes at top. No weather stripping, and in my opinion the hinge springs have way too much tension. The dog didn't like it either. Scrapped everything but the plexi and made my own.

  • Heavy Duty Dog Door / Big Dog Door Wall INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

    Tools needed for installation:

  • Jigsaw
  • Drill with 1/2" drill bit
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Square
  • Level

Installing On a Wall: The Heavy Duty Dog Door and Big Dog Door are installed on the outside surface of a building, wall or door, etc.

Step #1: Measure the belly height of your pet from ground level to his underside to find the correct height of the door opening. Bottom edge is usually 6" to 12". Do not mount flush to ground. For the Heavy Duty Dog Door cut the opening 12-1/2" wide x 17-1/2" high. For the Big Dog Door cut the opening 16-1/2" wide x 25-1/2" high.

Step #2: If mounted on garage or house wall, frame the depth of the wall to form a tunnel through the wall. (Use 2" X 4" or 2" X 6" material.) If needed, add a least a 1/2" x 1 1/2" flat outside mounting surfacing.

Step #3: Place door over opening and use the enclosed two 1 1/2" wood screws to hold door to opening.

Step #4: Show dog how to use door. Your dog will learn to use your pet door almost at once, but there are a few which may be a little nervous at first. The most important rule is to be patient. Do not let the dog have a bad experience or it may become frightened.

Most dogs can be trained to use a pet door in a matter of hours. Your dog will respond to encouragement, repetition and play in particular.

Alternatively, use the door flap as part of a game - throw a ball through, for instance. As your dog responds to your encouraging calls, help it through the door, patting and congratulating it. Repeat the game several times, continually encouraging the animal with positive gestures and comments. Within a short time your dog will be totally familiar with its pet door and use it happily on its own.

I have seven-week old lab pups that use these doors, naturally, your dog will learn too.

Problems -- see Special Dog Training Instructions

Installation Tips: Install 1/8" felt or rubber weather stripping on surface of building or door. Do not put rubber weather stripping on Gun Dog House Door. NOTE: If your door does not close at the bottom, the door is installed incorrectly. Unscrew door and move 1/4" lower. If there is a gap between top strap and upper door frame, move door 1/4" higher.

  • Heavy Duty Dog Door / Big Dog Door House or Garage Door INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Installing on a House or Garage Door:

The Heavy Duty Dog Door and Big Dog Door are installed on the outside of a house door.

Determine Height: To find correct height of the hole for your dog, measure the belly height of your pet. (Average installation is six to twelve inches.) Mark the height in pencil on one side of your door.

Drilling and Cutting the Hole: The Heavy Duty Dog Door hole size is 12-1/2" x 17-1/2". For the Big Dog Door the hole size is 16-1/2" x 25-1/2". Drill one-half inch in each corner. Insert jigsaw into drill hole and cut out hole. If installing on a steel door, cut hole one-half inch larger, glue one quarter inch pine or cedar trim inside opening. If installed on a raised panel door, cut hole in center of door. Glue/caulk pine or cedar trim to cover styrofoam and install trim to inside/outside of door surface. If installing in a hollow core door, use four strips of wood the same width as the hollow between the panels in your door. Position the wood so that they are flush with the edges of the hole. Either glue, nail or screw the strips. Frame the outside/inside hole with (2) inch by (1/4) inch lengths. Again, either glue, nail or screw to door surface as the photos illustrate.

Draw template/drill 1/2" holes. Opening 12-1/2" x 17-1/2" on the Heavy Duty Dog Door, 16-1/2" x 25-1/2" on the Big Dog Door.

    Cut raised panel door surface

Use silicone caulking around trim kit for added insulation. To quiet door closing staple 5/8" window felt to sides and bottom.

Installed door trim kit. Photo 6

Jigsaw cutting to each (1/2") drilled corners.

Steel door: Note hole is cut 1/2" larger to allow for 1/4" thick wood inserts. Opening 13" x 18" on the Heavy Duty Dog Door, 17" x 26" on the Big Dog Door.

Frame the inside and outside of the hole on the door -- use 1/4" cedar or pine 2" wide.

Heavy Duty Dog Door installed on a metal door.

Show dog how to use door. Your dog will learn to use your pet door almost at once, but there are a few which may be a little nervous at first. The most important rule is to be patient. Do not let the dog have a bad experience or it may become frightened.
