Tips from Kane on Maintaining Your Heated Dog Waterer:
Tip #1: Keep the gasket inside the lid well lubricated.
There is a flat rubber gasket inside the black screw-on lid. This gasket can stick to the neck of the waterer making the lid difficult to unscrew. The trick is to keep this gasket well lubricated with petroleum jelly (eg. Vaseline). Do this EVERY time you unscrew the lid to fill the waterer.
Use a large disposable syringe filled with petroleum jelly and use it to apply a fine bead of lubricant all the way around the gasket. You can also just use a small dab on your finger to accomplish the same thing. Also, do not over tighten the cover when you screw it on, just snug it up.
Tip #2: Keep the heating element clean.
The heating element will eventually build up with lime and minerals. When this happens, the element cannot transfer the heat to the water as designed and the unit may frost up. We recommend cleaning the element once or twice a year, depending upon the mineral levels in your water. The simplest way to clean the element is to empty the waterer and dump in a gallon of white vinegar. Let sit for a few hours. For really heavy mineral deposits, you might have to lightly scrub the heating element with a scouring pad, or use a commercial household lime remover.
