We sell a lot of the Nelson Automatic Dog Waterers. It's a very popular product for us even though it's a little on the expensive side. Nelson is the high-end of the dog waterers.
The low end of the waterers that we sell are plastic, and I am never a big fan of a plastic bowl for a dog. It is just something to chew on. That is one of the things you have got to look at and decide, "I have a chewer or I don't have a chewer." You don't have to worry about your dog chewing on the Nelson 1200B because it's built out of stainless steel.
The Nelson Automatic waterers require you to have a water connection that is close to where you mount it.
Here's how it works: As the dog drinks the water down, the float drops to a certain level and it automatically
refills. It's pretty neat.
The biggest fear that I have with this type of product is that it doesn't eliminate the need for keeping an eye on your dog. I wouldn't recommend leaving for two weeks and leaving it hooked up in case something happened. Although you don't have to worry about your dog's water getting low, it's always a good idea to check your dog on a daily basis to make sure everything is in working order and your dog is properly hydrated. A dog cannot go long without water in the summer time before getting heat stroke or dying.
The other thing you have got to watch on automatic dog waterers is cleaning them. Depending on where you place your waterer, you are going to get some algae. If it is in the sun at all you are going to get fast algae build up. If you keep it out of the sun and clean it once a week, most folks ought to be in good shape. Bleach kills algae probably faster than anything, but you can kill it with soap too. It's not a big deal.
We have very, very few returns on the Nelson 1200B because they are nice, stout products.

The Nelson Dog Waterer's quality is evident in the construction and design of this unit. The multiple mounting options should fit everyone's needs and will withstand the environmental conditions for many, many years. The automatic waterer assures my Lab has access to essential water whenever he desires... and in the heat of Texas a hard working dog can and should consume lots of water to remain hydrated and healthy. Knowing he has access to clean water anytime of the day or night reassure me I'm doing everything I can for my dog since he works so tirelessly for me in the field. With the convenience offered by this unit, there also comes a responsibility to make sure you clean and maintain it to assure the constant supply of clean water to your canine. Maintenance is minimal, just a visual inspection each time you clean out the environmental debris which accumulates from normal use.

These are great units and make cleaning quick and easy. I actually use them for my alpacas as well as my dogs. I think I have 7 of them currently.
The cost is worth the longevity of the unit. Most waterers break (plastic) or rust out and you have to replace at least annually. These last for years!
Now if I can just see them for 99.00 again, I can buy more!
Thank you

I have a conflicted review of this product. I have 4 installed in our dog runs, and 1 installed in our house. They are super easy to clean, and are very durable. However, I'm pretty sure this waterer was involved in the gruesome partial amputation and de-gloving of my dogs middle toe. I'm not sure what happened, but when I came back home the dog was missing her middle toe and the waterer was broken with water flooding our garage. I'm pretty sure she managed to get it stuck/pinched in the device and frantically tried to get it lose, thereby causing an expensive trip to the vet. I ordered spare parts for the product, and fixed it, but am still wary of the continued use without being supervised. I would recommend very careful placement when installing in multiple dog runs, to make sure the dog doesn't get a foot up on it and a toe stuck.

I am notorious for ending up with metal to plastic fittings that leak. Everything else installed easy enough. Might have been nice to have some wood screws that fit the unit for fastening into the wall since they included the chainlink mountings it wouldn't have taken much to include some wood screws. Nice heavy stainless steel. I was concerned when I ordered it sight unseen but it is definitely as advertised.

Hello Steve,
The first waterer I purchased approxiately 4 years ago. I like it so much, I purchased 2 more. The two most recent purchases do not seem to be machined as accurately as the first. The components do not fit together quite as well as the original purchase.
The waterers are easy to clean, easy to install, have demonstrated longevity, plus provide a constant supply of fresh water to the dogs.
My second full time job is foster mom to shelter dogs in need. I have been fortunate to have fostered around 100 dogs and enjoy fostering pregnant females through delivery. These waterers are great for supplying water to litters of growing puppies. My most recent foster litter had ten puppies and I would not have been able to keep up with the demand for water without this product.
I will be opening a boarding facility in the next 9 months and will be purchasing the new feeders and the waterers to use at my new facility.
Thanks for the inquiry,

I have had the Nelson Dog Waterer now for 4 years and it has been quite reliable. This is the all-stainless steel version. It has a direct hose connection and I route that out and through the fence as short as possible so that the dogs don't chew on it. The bowl is stainless, rectangular, and mounted via 2 mounting screws (with a sliding tab to make emptying the bowl easy)
Likewise, since the unit is stainless there is no rust (except for a little on the spot-welds that hold the 2 mounting screws in place). These 2 dismount screws make dumping the stainless bowl easy.
I purchased 2 of the units so that I could swap out the bowls periodically -- I clean one while the other one is in-place being used.
For the winter, I put a small dog water bowl heater in the bowl and it keeps things from freezing (it has a built-in thermostat). But I wish that this could be integrated into the bottom of the bowl itself (i.e. not in the water, but connected to the bottom of the bowl). This would be a big improvement.
Also, since this bowl is outside, it does accumulate green "pond scum". But a simple sun shade would probably solve that problem (tried it, but my dogs ate it. A stainless plate would work better).
All-in-all it is a fine product and I have been very happy with its trouble-free performance.

Waterer provides a consistent supply of fresh water but has required regular attention. I had to order a replacement inlet hose after about one year because of leakage. Stainless steel bowl began developing rust within a year but it is too expensive to replace. Needs frequent (weekly) anti-rust attention (scrubbing and treatment with CLR). Otherwise, it works satisfactorily. I wish the bowl were available in a non-rusting material.

Bowl needs daily cleaning to prevent slime buildup and staleness of the water Would be nice if it had a small connection on bottom of bowl to drain/rinse

Cannot get it to stop. Water comes in and seems to stop; cannot see or hear that it is running but if I return after an hour or so, water is dripping over the top. Dogs are NOT in the room when this happens. Cannot figure out why it keeps seeping out.
Attaches to a standard outdoor spigot. If you need a longer hose, a standard garden hose will work, or you have a problem with your dog chewing the hose, try a metal washing machine line with a female to male adapter. This should be available at your local home improvement store.
