I got a final version of the SD 425 right around the beginning of hunting season in 2012. While I had been looking forward to this collar coming out, it really was not something that I planned to use for myself and I figured after a short few tests I would be done with it. I am still using it several months later and it is now one of my favorite collars. It's in my truck right now and I use it almost every day. I have used it on Roxy for every duck hunt this year and I expect to keep using it around the house for some time.
The 425 is the replacement for the extremely popular SD 400. This version fixes several things that the 400 was missing and brings it in line with the new generation SportDOG collars.
The new features of the 425 include:
Rapid 2 hour charge
Mode selection collar choices for sensitive and regular dogs
Tone and Vibration options
Multi dog modes that include Tone or Vibration on the dial, allowing you to use tone or vibration when in a two or three dog set up
The 425 is a great collar for obedience work, retrievers and flushers. It's going to quickly become one of our best sellers in its category.
While the 400 has been our best selling collar under $200 for the last 8 or 9 years, I never really found a use for it. The 425 has changed that for me. It is an awesome system for folks that don't need a lot of range but want a full featured system for working close to medium range dogs.
The SD-425 is one of the smallest of the SportDOG collars that's out there, both transmitter and collar. It's designed for a pretty wide range of dogs. It's a 500 yard system and it covers a lot of different features for a pretty small unit.
The size of it is a big deal. It's very comfortable in your hand. The original 400 units I didn't care for as much. They didn't fit my hand as well. But the 425, they've made a slight change to it and it's just a little bit more comfortable.
They've also made a change to the antenna. It's a little prettier design than what we had on the 400.
The 425 features vibe tone on the dial. So in the first position on your dial you have a V/T. depending on which mode you are in, you can have both vibration and tone at the same time operating off of different buttons. In this setup we have tone on the side and then we have vibe on the front buttons. To get a stimulation, we then move up. We still have tone on the side, but now we are stimming on the front buttons. To move back to vibration simply turn your dial back to V/T and you've got vibration again.
The idea behind this is that you can have a lot more options, especially in a multi-dog mode. If you set this up in a two or three dog mode, you can still have vibration or tone depending on which setup you prefer. They also have a couple of setups where you can have both vibration and tone. And then you've got a wide choice of stimulation levels.
Really small collar. I'm pretty comfortable with this on a dog that's about 10 pounds and up. It comes with regular and long contact points. It's got the rapid charging system that SportDOG has on most of their collars. You can get a full charge from a completely drained battery in about two hours.
Just a really easy system to work with. 500 yards is going to cover most people. It's a great pet collar. It's a great obedience trainer. And I used one all season on my Labrador in duck hunting situations and in pheasant situations. It is just a great little trainer for that type of work. I was real pleased with it. It's a very popular collar for us and we've had a lot of success with them.
"Range is 10 times better than my previous collar."
Hunts. Family pet. Let me start by saying that my dog is not full time e-collar training yet. She is still a little young, but we do use it from time to time. I am very happy with the time I have spent with the collar. I am excited because of the tone function. I live in Ohio where we get 'weather'. I like that I have 400 yards that are in affected by wind direction.
It feels solidly built, and the few times I have used it, it produced the results that I expected. In about a month is when I am expecting to go full time.
I am excited that if I keep this collar for a few years, I can get replacement batteries. This makes it exciting to know my next dog I can use this same collar on.

"I've been fostering Sophie for 5 months now, and working on her aggression issues...I'm finally confident that she will thrive when she finds her forever home!"
Owns 3 dogs. Family pet. I've been using the 425S for 4 days now, and the change in behavior in Sophie, my very active and aggressive bully girl, has been amazing. I've been fostering Sophie for 5 months now, and working on her aggression issues on a regular basis with trainers and on my own. I'm sure all that work formed a solid basis for the change this week, but her responses to commands are so good now that I rarely have to actually 'nick' her. Before, her responses would depend on her mood and the situation, and you could see that she was making decisions before complying or ignoring commands. Now her response is immediate with no thinking involved. I'm finally confident that she will thrive when she finds her forever home!

Our dog was trained young and obeyed basic commands well until recently. He was one of a litter from a stray, and one of his brothers went to relatives nearby. The two probably never socialized sufficiently outside their litter, so puppy-play has morphed into somewhat aggressive play that freaks out many other dogs and definitely non-dog people. Lately when off leash (which almost always), he has taken to bolting, so I needed a way to reinforce his previous obedience skills. Using the methods from the DVD to introduce the collar over a few weeks has worked. He sees the collar and expects it's time to play. I now feel confident that when distracted by people or other dogs, I can have him sit-stay before he bolts and he obeys. I recommend the collar to anyone who is willing to have patience and work diligently to have fun developing their dog's discipline.

Not only the controller, but the collar is very light and slim, yet seems very durable. I've used other training collars in the past, including an older Tri-Tronics unit that I was not near as pleased with, as I am this unit. It's a smarter design than I've seen or used. Even down to the ability to use it ALL day, then completely recharge it in only two hours!! The German Shepard I'm using it on weighs about 105lbs., is VERY active, and responds to a level 1 nick with no further stimulation needed. (Unit has 1-7 level settings). Great product!! Family pet. I normally don't leave feedback, but this e collar has been a game changer so I felt I needed too. My lab was around 9 months old and was constantly trying to bolt out the door if opened and when he did he would make us chase him for 15-20 mins before he would come back. This was extremely frustrating and embarrassing in front of neighbors. We couldn't let him hang out in the yard off leash while we were outside because he would chase squirls, cats and people. So when we had to do yard work or something he had to stay inside and look at us through the window, sad wanting to come play which only added to his eagerness to bolt out the door when opened. I didn't really have the extra $175 to spend on an e collar, but something had to give. My wife and I both tested the collar on our self on settings 1-7 (It goes to 14) and decided level 3 didn't hurt but just felt kinda weird. Level 3 ended up being the working level for my lab as well. I started by using a 15ft leash and would let him get distracted and then I would say "here", shock him and pull the leash towards me. He learned the here command perfectly after about 10 times. Today after 3 weeks I have a dog that will obey the here command from anywhere in my yard and if not a simple shock makes him come running for my feet. I now come home from work and go outside and he just stays by my side or plays in the yard close by with OUT A LEASH! I can even take him for walks around the neighborhood now without a leash. This e collar truly has been a blessing for my dog and my family.

Family pet. My yellow lab was great with all his commands while in the house. However, take him outside, and it was as if I was not there. He would not come when I would call him, and it was like he never heard the word "NO" before. He would come back whenever he felt like it. I decided my Goober needed a training collar system. I researched many collar systems and found this system had everything I was looking for. I have been using the SD-425 on the lowest setting, and I have to tell you, it works great. While outside, Goober has gone from not listening, to obeying all his commands, especially "NO" and "COME." Now, I rarely have to press a button. This system is setup so you can start off on the lowest setting and work up to more intense settings, if your dog needs it. Goober never had to advance from the lowest setting. The system is easy to use, and I feel it was worth every penny I spent.

Owns 2 dogs. Family pet. So far, so good (2 weeks). I purchased two SD-425 collars, one for each dog (age 2.5 yrs) since their personalities are SO different. I was concerned that I would be constantly switching dials and confusing buttons. I am glad I purchased two. I purchased these products to mostly cure unwanted behavior in our back yard/garden. We are making GREAT progress. We are pretty much at the point where I can give a verbal command with the tone or vibrate mode only without the nick mode to re-direct their undesirable behavior. I am finding that my obedience trained pups are on task with their commands as well which is a bonus. The next step is to move to the trail off lead using the e-collars to re-direct the pups when they are really distracted. I am also looking forward to our upcoming camping season with the pups coming along. I was very hesitant to use e-collars and did a lot of research before deciding on these valuable tools. I am happy with my investment, and the service that Gun Dog Supply provided for my two adored pets. One suggestion I have is to sell different colored lanyards to match the different colored collars available to purchase. It was the numerous positive customer reviews and phenomenal website that led me to this product and company to make my purchase.

Lab and Great Dane. Owns 12 dogs. Hunts. Family pet. I love everything about this. I have not had to turn it past level 3. I do not have to use it much, my dogs listen pretty well. If they get hard headed, as soon as I put it on they listen like a champ. I can leave this sitting around for a month cut off and cut it on and it will still have a charge. The dogs go swimming with it a lot, it holds up well. I have recommended this product to many people, two thumbs up on the SD-425.

"Dog became obedient within a short time after using the product."
labrador retriever. Family pet. The Field Trainer SD-425 is an easy to use collar. I bought it to help reinforce commands when my dog is out of sight or has a "squirrel!" moment. My area is home to deer, and little quick movement animals so even walking to the local park can be an excersice in " Leave it!". The SD-425 quickly reminds my 90lbs dog to listen. This is just another tool to use in our daily training times, and it gives me a sense of relief to know now that I have the ability to remind my dog that my word is law, even 100 meters away.

Doberman Pincer. Family pet. The small size of both the controller and the collar are fantastic! Not too sure about the tuning dial, needs more levels, but he's growing 6 lbs a week! Gun Dog Supply is the best source for e collars. The video reviews were invaluable. Reviewed all collars here and compared prices elsewhere and bought here.

Hunts. Works great. 1 year old took to the SD-425 with in 2-3 days. The reach is great. As soon as she hears the tone, she is paying attention. I very seldom have to use any other stimulation. She also loves the collar. If I put it on her, she knows we are doing something she loves to do. Have a hard time taking it back off of her. Great product!

boykin. Hunts. Family pet. I love it. Magnolia is a little sensitive but head strong sometimes. I like the different options the SD425 offers. Plus she is only 35 lbs so the small receiver on the collar works great for her size.

"Follow the instructional video. Make sure your dog knows the basics and this collar will be a huge help."
Labrador. Hunts. I have been very satisfied with this collar. It is just as advertised on your website. My dog is just over 7 months old and knows the basic commands (sit, stay, heel, come). I bought the collar because he was becoming a little hard-headed.... following the commands when he wanted to, especially when he was away from me. The collar has him focused again. I really like the vibration/beep option in addition to the stimulation. Follow the instructional video. Make sure your dog knows the basics and this collar will be a huge help.

"I'm new to the technology, but the theory makes sense."
Chocolate Lab. Family pet. Paid attention to the DVD and worked a little harder on Nib's skills on her leads, 8' & 30', before using the e-collar. The results were really gratifying. Responsiveness is good and she's quickly correcting some behaviors that she picked-up under her previous owners. I'm new to the technology, but the theory makes sense. I'll standardize on the Robin MacFarlane protocols for consistency and look forward to even greater improvement.

This product delivers everything that was promised. It is easy to use, excellent quality and covers all the basics well. So far my dog has responded well. I have not had to use the ranges beyond the sound and vibration. He is a well behaved and trained dog. I got the device to control his barking in our house, which is minimal to begin with. My dog had no issue accepting the collar, and the vibrations are just enough to support the "no" command. All support material was easy to comprehend and on target. The only reason I did not rate as excellent is it is early in the training process, and the results for total change of behavior are still a work in process. If you are in need of a basic, easy to use command device, I would highly recommend the Field Trainer SD-425.

Hunts. Size of the collar and remote couldn't be any better. Just started using it with collar corrections after our 7month old lab has worn it for about 2 weeks. He has responded very well and I recommend this tool for any dog owner. The instructional video is good and very simple to follow for first time users. I'm a former dog handler and have used many collar brands and this so far is the best I've used. Also you can't beat the price from this site.

Family pet. I had a G2 Sport Garmin, and the battery went dead in 14 months :( so I bought this from watching the video (thanks Steve!). What's nice is it vibrates, and that's usually all I need to get the dogs attention. Time will tell though, because I've only had it a few weeks, which is not long enough. Ask me in a year, although the video says they used it a year on their Lab with no issues.

"Works great, but buttons are difficult with gloves on."
Family pet. It has been so cold and snowy here in Chicago (the city itself) that I have only had a few opportunities to use the 425. Our dog and I have to learn more about it together. Two of our kids use the collar with their dogs and sold me on getting one. The few times I have used it, I have gained confidence in working with the dog. I feel that my rating will improve to excellent, as we get more opportunities to use it.

It works, and I can feel it on myself when I test it. However, quite often it does not work on the dog. I'm sure it is because of his winter coat. Other than shaving his neck, I'm at a loss for what to do. I've tried the longer prods; putting it on very tight, moving the prods back and forth to make contact and increasing the stimulus. When it is in contact he reacts to the lowest setting. Suggestions are appreciated.

Family pet. Love the unit. Simple. Surprised by how small and comfortable the handset is. Easy to program. Can't say a negative about performance, but collar is not great for a long haired dog. A tad thin and narrow, making it difficult to put on. Will be easier with his summer buzz cut I hope.

Family pet. I previously had a Tri-Tronics sport series, which I liked, but when it died after a few years, I thought I would try something new. The SportDog collar is thinner, and the unit is smaller, but the prongs seem marginally longer. The handheld unit is quite small, which I like. And the SportDog allows both tone and vibe, which I like, as I prefer not to stim/shock the dog when possible. The range isn't as long as the Tri-Tronics, and I'm not sure I'd the units, which have rubberized covers over the charging ports, would be as waterproof as the Tri-Tronics, but there have been no problems so far, and the price, convenience, and size of the unit are real selling points.

Family pet. I cannot say. The first one was defective, which I reported. Gun Dog Supply immediately sent another, which arrived promptly. Hard as it is to believe, it, too was defective, in the same way: the transmitter charging light did not come on, and the transmitter refused to accept a charge. (Both receivers were fine.) Thinking I must have done something wrong, I called your office and spoke to someone there, who verified that I had not. I decided to try another model, the 350, which has been shipped. I will give you a report after I have tried it. I will also return the two defective collars as soon as the new one arrives. The person I spoke with, whose name I do not know, was polite and helpful.

Owns 3 dogs. Competes. I hate buckles on e-collars. Snap closures are so much better once you get the perfect fit locked in, since fit is so important with these. If you have multiple dogs of course, buckles are best. I got this model because it could be reset lower at the receiver, but the normal is lower than my other collar, FT 303. Planned on returning it, but never got around to it, might as well have a back-up.

Family pet. I like the reduced size over the previous model. Several years ago I purchased a similar Sport Dog model (I forget the number) from Gun Dog Supply. I noticed immediately, as did my dog, that the stimulation level of the collar changed during our outing. Sometimes it would notch up several levels and elicit a shock that got way too much reaction and sometimes it would dwindle to nothing--even when turned all the way to the highest level. My dog does not need a reminder often, but when she does her response needs to be immediate. I experimented with setting the receiver to each of the three default levels and did not see a consistent performance of the collar. I tested the stimulation level before and after each outing on myself. It almost never was consistent at the beginning and the end. After attempting a troubleshoot with Gun Dog Support, they sent a replacement set. Much to my dismay that set had the same problem. I relented that it was just a defect of the product as a whole and hoped and prayed I did not have to use the stimulation on my dog. When the old set stopped working altogether, I went to Gun Dog Supply. The reviews on this newer model where overwhelmingly positive with no mention of the same problems I and my dog had experienced. So I ordered this set. Much to my continued dismay, this set has the same issue. Although the stimulation level swings aren't as wide, they still are not the same going out and coming back. I am disappointed. I rated it Average only because I didn't want to rate it Bad. I guess 2 1/2 stars would be my true rating. My dog is a pet, but with her champion breeding, she loves to hunt when she is off leash in the sticks and hinterland. every once in a while she needs just a nick to get her attention...not a jolt. I can't believe I am 3 for 3 with a bad set...hasn't anyone else had this experience?

Hunts. Family pet. When it works, it works great, but it does not give a consistent signal. I couldn't understand why. Sometimes she would ignore it, and other times yelp on the same setting. So I tested it on myself... Found it to be very inconsistent, especially when the battery get below about 75% charge. In Gun Dog's defense, they contacted me when I complained. But I never think to call until I am out in the field. I have found that if you play with the dial it works ok again.

Hunts. When this collar works it's great, and when it doesn't the dog pays the price. I have not looked into getting it repaired or replace yet. I have used it for about 2 months. Most of the time the lower setting range 2-3 works great. A shake of Gaby's head, and she is eyes on me looking for a command, or her hearing suddenly improves. But then there are times that I get no reaction at all. 4 no response 5 no response 6 still nothing... then 7... top of the range.. nothing... then after a few taps she screeches...
I tested it on myself and found it was very inconsistent with impulse given. At times, but not always, I would get nothing on my wrist (with good contact) at level 1, 2, and 3... and zapped hard on 4...
Have also tried repeatedly hitting the signal button 4 or 5 times on setting 3. The first few times, little or no signal, then bang. This seems to happen fresh off the charger or after a few hours in the field. Sometimes it works great for days. Other times it works about every other time. My guess is poor components or shabby construction. I can't wait till I can afford something better. I will be looking a little closer at the reviews next time.

The SportDOG Field Trainer SD 425 is an incredibly versatile training collar and a good choice for all-around use. The SportDOG FieldTrainer SD 425 is ideal for training in the yard, field, or for hunting with close-working dogs. Both the transmitter and receiver are waterproof and submersible.
The 425 can be expanded to control up to three dogs by adding SportDOG Brand Add-A-Dog collars. The comfortable "soft coat" transmitter finish makes this unit a pleasure to handle.
The low continuous stimulation levels and gradual increases between levels on the SD-425 are particularly useful with sensitive dogs or breeds.
You can customize your SportDOG Field Trainer SD-425 to match your training preference. It comes set up in MODE-1 (a 7-level continuous + 7-level momentary stimulation one dog collar with non-stimulation tone button), but it can easily be changed into 7 different modes with different button configurations.
