One hour of BASIC OBEDIENCE training
from Pro Trainer Robin MacFarlane.
I got a final version of the SD 425 right around the beginning of hunting season in 2012. While I had been looking forward to this collar coming out, it really was not something that I planned to use for myself and I figured after a short few tests I would be done with it. I am still using it several months later and it is now one of my favorite collars. It's in my truck right now and I use it almost every day. I have used it on Roxy for every duck hunt this year and I expect to keep using it around the house for some time.
The 425 is the replacement for the extremely popular SD 400. This version fixes several things that the 400 was missing and brings it in line with the new generation SportDOG collars.
The new features of the 425 include:
Rapid 2 hour charge
Mode selection collar choices for sensitive and regular dogs
Tone and Vibration options
Multi dog modes that include Tone or Vibration on the dial, allowing you to use tone or vibration when in a two or three dog set up
The 425 is a great collar for obedience work, retrievers and flushers. It's going to quickly become one of our best sellers in its category.
While the 400 has been our best selling collar under $200 for the last 8 or 9 years, I never really found a use for it. The 425 has changed that for me. It is an awesome system for folks that don't need a lot of range but want a full featured system for working close to medium range dogs.
The SD-425 is one of the smallest of the SportDOG collars that's out there, both transmitter and collar. It's designed for a pretty wide range of dogs. It's a 500 yard system and it covers a lot of different features for a pretty small unit.
The size of it is a big deal. It's very comfortable in your hand. The original 400 units I didn't care for as much. They didn't fit my hand as well. But the 425, they've made a slight change to it and it's just a little bit more comfortable.
They've also made a change to the antenna. It's a little prettier design than what we had on the 400.
The 425 features vibe tone on the dial. So in the first position on your dial you have a V/T. depending on which mode you are in, you can have both vibration and tone at the same time operating off of different buttons. In this setup we have tone on the side and then we have vibe on the front buttons. To get a stimulation, we then move up. We still have tone on the side, but now we are stimming on the front buttons. To move back to vibration simply turn your dial back to V/T and you've got vibration again.
The idea behind this is that you can have a lot more options, especially in a multi-dog mode. If you set this up in a two or three dog mode, you can still have vibration or tone depending on which setup you prefer. They also have a couple of setups where you can have both vibration and tone. And then you've got a wide choice of stimulation levels.
Really small collar. I'm pretty comfortable with this on a dog that's about 10 pounds and up. It comes with regular and long contact points. It's got the rapid charging system that SportDOG has on most of their collars. You can get a full charge from a completely drained battery in about two hours.
Just a really easy system to work with. 500 yards is going to cover most people. It's a great pet collar. It's a great obedience trainer. And I used one all season on my Labrador in duck hunting situations and in pheasant situations. It is just a great little trainer for that type of work. I was real pleased with it. It's a very popular collar for us and we've had a lot of success with them.
Let me start by saying that my dog is not full time e-collar training yet. She is still a little young, but we do use it from time to time. I am very happy with the time I have spent with the collar. I am excited because of the tone function. I live in Ohio where we get 'weather'. I like that I have 400 yards that are in affected by wind direction.
It feels solidly built, and the few times I have used it, it produced the results that I expected. In about a month is when I am expecting to go full time.
I am excited that if I keep this collar for a few years, I can get replacement batteries. This makes it exciting to know my next dog I can use this same collar on.

"I've been fostering Sophie for 5 months now, and working on her aggression issues...I'm finally confident that she will thrive when she finds her forever home!"
I've been using the 425S for 4 days now, and the change in behavior in Sophie, my very active and aggressive bully girl, has been amazing. I've been fostering Sophie for 5 months now, and working on her aggression issues on a regular basis with trainers and on my own. I'm sure all that work formed a solid basis for the change this week, but her responses to commands are so good now that I rarely have to actually 'nick' her. Before, her responses would depend on her mood and the situation, and you could see that she was making decisions before complying or ignoring commands. Now her response is immediate with no thinking involved. I'm finally confident that she will thrive when she finds her forever home!

This product is terrific. I finally have control of my strong-minded dog in the woods and at the dog park. It has been a great supplement to my training efforts. It worked instantly. My dog was very responsive to the tone only. I seldom need the stimulation. I recommend it to all my dog friends. Thanks.

"This collar has ensured Chloe's safety and has given me peace of mind and a daily joyful experience with Chloe that I never thought we would achieve."
After just one day with this e-collar, Chloe now enjoys playing ball at the park, sitting on the front porch and exploring in the front yard, and play dates with other dogs! Before we purchased the collar, Chloe would take off running towards a very busy street anytime she got out of the back yard! This collar has ensured Chloe's safety and has given me peace of mind and a daily joyful experience with Chloe that I never thought we would achieve. One day with the collar, and using just the "nick" button, and Chloe is able to understand what I have been trying to communicate with her.

"Really good product, and small in your pocket as well."
I've been through many training collars over the years. Everyone has failed in a few months, and they weren't cheap. I've waited 4 months to review this SD-425. Using it daily, it hasn't let me down. All I need to use is the tone for Toby. When he sees geese and forgets, I tap the vibration. The charge lasts more than a month. It's great over all. Thanks Steve for breaking down all the Trainers to 5 that would fit my needs.

Once I got the SD-425 collar I literally used it 3 times before she understood my commands to come back. Now all I say is I'll get the collar, and she stops and comes back. An awesome tool. Our dog Kiya loves to be outdoors and like most dogs will chase any bird, squirrel and even deer. The simple tone/vibration will redirect her attention and she will come right back. We are fortunate that she is such an awesome dog with a great personality. But having the collar helps us with keeping her close when she needs to be.

Love this!! Works perfectly every time. I usually only have to use the beep or the vibration. Apart from off leash obedience I've been able to ditch the prong collar. Now I wall him on a normal flat collar and just give him a vibration when he starts pulling and stops immediately. He has an excellent track record with near perfect recall but recently started acting up as I got a new puppy. This has given me back my obedient dog with very little effort. I'm so grateful!!!

The SD-425 is just as described. It fits my just 10 pound female JRT quite well. The controls are easy to work, and everything seems to be composed of high quality material and well manufactured. The battery life and reliability of the E-Collar and remote control far exceeds many of the other E-Collars I was looking at purchasing. The pamphlets and DVD that came with the unit were so welcomed! I have been able to apply what I have read about training my dog with the SD-425 very quickly and with high success. My dog is 1 year old and has been very quick to learn the on-leash commands, and I am now able to train her using the SD-425 E-Collar easily. I am quite happy with the SD-425. A huge thank you to Steve at Gun Dog Supply for steering me in the right direction. The customer service at Gun Dog Supply is excellent! We bought the Field Trainer for our mischievous 10 month old lab. We have actually been using it in two different applications (not sure if that going against professional recommendations or not), and it has been great. I use the collar when the pup and I are out in the field doing off leash training and I have not had to go above setting number 1 to get the desired response. Learning point was using the longer tines and make sure they are set firmly against skin instead of getting lost in the fur. The other use is around the house when I am at work. Pup knows when dad is not home and he loves to steal pillows and hand towels from my wife and run them out to the yard to destroy them. We could not find any training videos or information or people admitting to using the collar in this fashion but it has worked great, on level 1 we get instant stop of bad behavior and it has had no negative affiliation when I use it for fun in the field. Great product, works well in mud and water, great range and durability. Highly recommend this and maybe gundogsupply can come out with a non hunting or advanced uses video for further applications. Thanks for listening.

My Doberman works off leash with the SportDOG Field Trainer SD-425 without any problem. He responds well to the tone accompanied by my voice command. If he is really busy with a squirrel he may need the vibration to get his attention. The rotary dial makes it easy to change from vibrate/tone to a more aggressive stimulation, but he never seems to require it. The collar is small enough that it does not hinder his movement and the controller is small enough that it will fit in my pocket...easy for both of us. Since I rarely allow him out of my sight the 500 yard range works well at the bark park, my back yard, or going for a walk in the neighborhood. Great product!

Our Brit loves to obey, so training is not a challenge. However, he is also bird crazy, so when we are in the woods we would need to have him on a long lead. The first time we used this collar there was no lead needed. The 1 setting was as high as we had to go and only used that when there was a bird. Great product.

Jolene is responding to her training with the e-collar incredibly well. She had solid obedience before, but as soon as she was off leash she would deliberately disobey my commands because there was no accountability. She is also a sensitive dog (anatolians are known as such...) and I was worried about how she would respond to the collar. I watched the DVD with Robin and Steve and made sure I knew what I was doing before heading out into the field. At first, she was really anxious about the new sensation, but I ensured that we took our time getting used to the collar and I continued to use tons of positive reinforcement. Now, just a few short weeks later, she definitely knows that a little tap means she needs to listen--no different than a tug on the leash--and I can generally get the behavior I am asking for just by using the vibrate setting. Basically, I have gone from an e-collar sceptic to an e-collar believer! Can't wait to see what results will come from more training.

I could not have my 10 month old pup off leash without him chasing cars, horses, deer or anything else that moved. All the obedience training we did was a good foundation, but the commands he performed so well in a confined area would fall on deaf ears. After about a week of training with the collar, our lives have improved 100%! I am now just using the tone or vibrate, and his recall off leash is excellent. Very easy to use. Would highly recommend!

Positives: small collar, great dial for stimulation levels, verified waterproof, and easy to use compared to other brands I've seen used which require linking the remote to receiver each time activated.
The only complaint I have is that for multiple dogs, the stimulation/tone/vibration setting options are limited. I like having both momentary and continuous stimulation options. With one dog, I have a button dedicated to momentary stim, another to continuous stim, and the third to vibrate. With multiple dogs, each button is continuous stim for each different collar. I'd prefer the ability to keep momentary stimulation with multiple dogs.
This is all clear if you take the time to read the product manual which is available on Gun Dog Supply.

I love the trainer. My dog has really responded to it, and the vibrating collar is a great feature. I don't have to shock her, I just vibrate the collar and she knows to respond. I do wish it had a little more shock at level 7 for the days she needs the extra correction. Had I to do it all over again, I think I would have gotten the 425S.

Owns 3 dogs. The SD-425 seems to be a really well made unit. It has very user friendly controls, multiple features and options, as well as being very compact. Not only the controller, but the collar is very light and slim, yet seems very durable. I've used other training collars in the past, including an older Tri-Tronics unit that I was not near as pleased with, as I am this unit. It's a smarter design than I've seen or used. Even down to the ability to use it ALL day, then completely recharge it in only two hours!! The German Shepard I'm using it on weighs about 105lbs., is VERY active, and responds to a level 1 nick with no further stimulation needed. (Unit has 1-7 level settings). Great product!! The Field Trainer SD-425 is an easy to use collar. I bought it to help reinforce commands when my dog is out of sight or has a "squirrel!" moment. My area is home to deer, and little quick movement animals so even walking to the local park can be an excersice in " Leave it!". The SD-425 quickly reminds my 90lbs dog to listen. So far, so good (2 weeks). I purchased two SD-425 collars, one for each dog (age 2.5 yrs) since their personalities are SO different. I was concerned that I would be constantly switching dials and confusing buttons. I am glad I purchased two. I purchased these products to mostly cure unwanted behavior in our back yard/garden. We are making GREAT progress. We are pretty much at the point where I can give a verbal command with the tone or vibrate mode only without the nick mode to re-direct their undesirable behavior. I am finding that my obedience trained pups are on task with their commands as well which is a bonus. The next step is to move to the trail off lead using the e-collars to re-direct the pups when they are really distracted. I am also looking forward to our upcoming camping season with the pups coming along. I was very hesitant to use e-collars and did a lot of research before deciding on these valuable tools. I am happy with my investment, and the service that Gun Dog Supply provided for my two adored pets. One suggestion I have is to sell different colored lanyards to match the different colored collars available to purchase. It was the numerous positive customer reviews and phenomenal website that led me to this product and company to make my purchase.

"This e collar truly has been a blessing for my dog and my family."
I normally don't leave feedback, but this e collar has been a game changer so I felt I needed too. My lab was around 9 months old and was constantly trying to bolt out the door if opened and when he did he would make us chase him for 15-20 mins before he would come back. This was extremely frustrating and embarrassing in front of neighbors. We couldn't let him hang out in the yard off leash while we were outside because he would chase squirls, cats and people. So when we had to do yard work or something he had to stay inside and look at us through the window, sad wanting to come play which only added to his eagerness to bolt out the door when opened. I didn't really have the extra $175 to spend on an e collar, but something had to give. My wife and I both tested the collar on our self on settings 1-7 (It goes to 14) and decided level 3 didn't hurt but just felt kinda weird. Level 3 ended up being the working level for my lab as well. I started by using a 15ft leash and would let him get distracted and then I would say "here", shock him and pull the leash towards me. He learned the here command perfectly after about 10 times. Today after 3 weeks I have a dog that will obey the here command from anywhere in my yard and if not a simple shock makes him come running for my feet. I now come home from work and go outside and he just stays by my side or plays in the yard close by with OUT A LEASH! I can even take him for walks around the neighborhood now without a leash. This e collar truly has been a blessing for my dog and my family.

"I recommend the collar to anyone who is willing to have patience and work diligently to have fun developing their dog's discipline."
Our dog was trained young and obeyed basic commands well until recently. He was one of a litter from a stray, and one of his brothers went to relatives nearby. The two probably never socialized sufficiently outside their litter, so puppy-play has morphed into somewhat aggressive play that freaks out many other dogs and definitely non-dog people. Lately when off leash (which almost always), he has taken to bolting, so I needed a way to reinforce his previous obedience skills. Using the methods from the DVD to introduce the collar over a few weeks has worked. He sees the collar and expects it's time to play. I now feel confident that when distracted by people or other dogs, I can have him sit-stay before he bolts and he obeys. I recommend the collar to anyone who is willing to have patience and work diligently to have fun developing their dog's discipline.

My yellow lab was great with all his commands while in the house. However, take him outside, and it was as if I was not there. He would not come when I would call him, and it was like he never heard the word "NO" before. He would come back whenever he felt like it. I decided my Goober needed a training collar system. I researched many collar systems and found this system had everything I was looking for. I have been using the SD-425 on the lowest setting, and I have to tell you, it works great. While outside, Goober has gone from not listening, to obeying all his commands, especially "NO" and "COME." Now, I rarely have to press a button. This system is setup so you can start off on the lowest setting and work up to more intense settings, if your dog needs it. Goober never had to advance from the lowest setting. The system is easy to use, and I feel it was worth every penny I spent.

I wrote and asked a question about the collar and got a speedy and clear answer from Mr. Giglio, which I appreciated. It has been a very good experience. Thanks for a great product.

I've had this for a couple weeks and am still training myself and my dog. The concept is great, but it is not necessarily easy if your dog is strong willed. Lucky me, mine is. She is a Lab mix and is very tolerant to all physical sensations. Nothing really bothers her. I can tell she feels it at the moderate level 2, thinks about it and will come. It's not an instant turn about. In high distraction situations I have turned it up to 5, and she comes around. Again, not instantly. So in a dangerous situation, like a car coming, I'm not sure it will help. But reading other reviews, I think it's her, not the device. So if you have a strong minded dog, beware it's not a cure all. As for the device itself, I would change a few things. 1) The numbers don't stand out, so I can't instantly see where I'm at and where I need to go. If you take your dog out in the pm, which is 4:45 in the winter, you're out of luck. 2) If it's winter and you have gloves on, good luck turning the dial. Likewise if your hands are wet via rain or snow. It is only user friendly in broad, dry daylight.

It has been so cold and snowy here in Chicago (the city itself) that I have only had a few opportunities to use the 425. Our dog and I have to learn more about it together. Two of our kids use the collar with their dogs and sold me on getting one. The few times I have used it, I have gained confidence in working with the dog. I feel that my rating will improve to excellent, as we get more opportunities to use it.

This product has worked wonders in my opinion. My dog is always pulling at the end of his leash when we walks and can be misbehaved when we go to other people's homes. After working with him with this collar after 2 weeks I saw dramatic improvement. When the collar is on he knows it's time to listen and behave. The only down side is my dog has very thick skin so the collar doesn't always pick up when I give him some pressure, however this is easily fixed after some adjustment. Just have to find the sweet spot.

This product delivers everything that was promised. It is easy to use, excellent quality and covers all the basics well. So far my dog has responded well. I have not had to use the ranges beyond the sound and vibration. He is a well behaved and trained dog. I got the device to control his barking in our house, which is minimal to begin with. My dog had no issue accepting the collar, and the vibrations are just enough to support the "no" command. All support material was easy to comprehend and on target. The only reason I did not rate as excellent is it is early in the training process, and the results for total change of behavior are still a work in process. If you are in need of a basic, easy to use command device, I would highly recommend the Field Trainer SD-425.

This product will be used to reinforce obedience training in a puppy. However, the puppy is not yet steady enough to use the collar. So, other than knowing that it is as advertised, charges, and works on me. I have nothing to report and no experience of its use. I expect we will be several weeks more in leash training before we are ready. I own several Sportdog products, and satisfaction with them was the major factor in my choice.

I had a G2 Sport Garmin, and the battery went dead in 14 months :( so I bought this from watching the video (thanks Steve!). What's nice is it vibrates, and that's usually all I need to get the dogs attention. Time will tell though, because I've only had it a few weeks, which is not long enough. Ask me in a year, although the video says they used it a year on their Lab with no issues.

Unit seems sturdy and works as advertised. Collar is kind of a pain. I would rather have a cloth material instead of the cheap plastic. I have never used a device like this before, but so far it seems like a very useful tool for stubbornness of dog - commands not obeyed. I have only had this unit for a month or so and have not really been out enough to see how well it really works. This type of device seems to provide a little more leverage when needed for her to obey. I need more experience with it to fully understand it's potential. The tone, vibrate and shock are all very useful. This dog obeys well with just tone and vibrate modes, but I did have to use shock once so far - when she decided to run off to the neighbors and play, running across the road and sloshing rain water and dirt all over everybody. She eventually came back by command but it took level #3 shock to get her attention again. I can see where it might be pretty handy for when she gets excited like this and wants to run to children and other dogs to play. She is getting large so children are afraid of her plus she jumps up on people, which is another command I need to get her to obey. I think this unit and method will come in very handy for some commands she needs to obey. All in all, this unit is probably a very good first time device of this nature, it is suppose to be waterproof which it seems to be so far, but I have not let the dog swim with it yet to really know. The batteries seem to last so far, but I really have not taken an entire day in the field with it to know. The construction is pretty good, you can tell it's not the cheap plastic on the handheld unit and the unit on the dog collar is well epoxied and constructed strongly. As I said before, the only thing I would complain about is the thin cheap collar, but I think you could fit a thin fabric material collar onto the unit and be much happier with the way it looks and feels to the dog. I don't know how other units work, but it would also be nice if the hand unit would make a tone when you use the tone button, just so you can feel more comfortable it is toning mode when you press the button, you can't hear anything if the dog is very far away. Only the collar unit tones. If the dog is not responding to the tone which you usually can’t hear - then you aren't sure if the collar is working correctly to confidently go to vibrate or shock to get her to obey. You just have to trust that the unit is working correctly. And don’t forget to turn the collar on when you are ready to use the hand device, it is easy to forget. The collar has a little green light on it when it is on, but you can’t see it once it’s on the dog. It would be nice to have a green flasher in the front of it that is more visible. But for a first time user, I am happy with it so far, I think it will work for some time and give me lots of pleasure in watching my dog friend advance and obey.

I bought the SportDog Field Trainer SD-425 to replace my old Yard Trainer, which failed after just short of 2 years of near daily use. The good: The SD-425 is lighter, charges MUCH faster, and holds a charge longer. The receiver is smaller and lighter, and the power button is relocated so that it sits against the dog’s neck. This should reduce the likelihood that the dog will bump up against something and inadvertently turn the collar off (not a big problem, but it did happen once or twice with the old collar). The small receiver also seems less likely to ride around to the side of my dog’s neck than the old receiver. The remote is small and light, and fits easily in a pocket. Of the 3 or 4 trainers I’ve tried, it’s by far my favorite remote. The SD-425 also has greater range, but that’s not a major issue for me – if my dog is more than 75 yards away we’re not working together as I would like. The different: With my old trainer I could program each of the 3 buttons, so I could have a tone button, a light stim button, and a more intense stim button. Having 2 levels of stim was really nice as it allowed me to keep the stim low but ramp up quickly if needed (think porcupine, car, etc.). With the SD-425 I now have a tone button, a “nick” (quick stim), and a continuous stim button – but both stims are set at the same level. Going from nick to continuous stim is less effective than an increase in stim levels. The SD-425 does give me the ability to control multiple dogs with the same remote, which my old trainer could not do. Giving up programming control over the button function to gain control over multiple collars is a tradeoff. I only have 1 dog, so it wasn’t a great tradeoff for me, but it likely makes sense for others. You be the judge. And just to be clear, you can always increase the stim by simply turning the dial. That’s pretty easy to do, but the less I need to fumble with the better (think about that charging that porcupine again). The other thing I noticed is that the rubber cap over the charging ports on the SD-425 is less secure than the cap on my old trainer. I’m not sure whether this will turn out to be a big difference or not. We haven’t been swimming with the new collar yet, but I’ll admit to being a little nervous. It’s hard to go wrong with the SD-425. It’s a well made product and simple to operate.

Purchased this collar for my in-laws dog, who is part black and tan coonhound and doberman. He has tons of energy, and they needed something to help contain him while in their yard. The tone feature is really quiet, so not very good if you lose your dog in cover. But the vibrate feature and the ease of setting the button modes is good. I'd recommend it for a pet use, but would probably not use in a hunting scenario.

I previously had a Tri-Tronics sport series, which I liked, but when it died after a few years, I thought I would try something new. The SportDog collar is thinner, and the unit is smaller, but the prongs seem marginally longer. The handheld unit is quite small, which I like. And the SportDog allows both tone and vibe, which I like, as I prefer not to stim/shock the dog when possible. The range isn't as long as the Tri-Tronics, and I'm not sure I'd the units, which have rubberized covers over the charging ports, would be as waterproof as the Tri-Tronics, but there have been no problems so far, and the price, convenience, and size of the unit are real selling points.

My puppy is only 3 months, so I have not really used it on him yet other than putting it on him to play so he associates a good time with the collar. I will start using it when we work on come command. Overall I am pleased, but wish the collar had another loop on it to contain the excess. Currently he is very small, and he can get to the excess collar and chews on it. I am afraid to cut too much off for fear that it will be too small when he is an adult. This is my first hunting dog, and I must say that I am very grateful to have stumbled upon this site. Although I have only made 1 purchase, I have read countless articles and reviews on other products. The information was very helpful, and this is now my go site for my gun dog questions and products.

It works, and I can feel it on myself when I test it. However, quite often it does not work on the dog. I'm sure it is because of his winter coat. Other than shaving his neck, I'm at a loss for what to do. I've tried the longer prods; putting it on very tight, moving the prods back and forth to make contact and increasing the stimulus. When it is in contact he reacts to the lowest setting. Suggestions are appreciated.

I got this model because it could be reset lower at the receiver, but the normal is lower than my other collar, FT 303. Planned on returning it, but never got around to it, might as well have a back-up.

I like the reduced size over the previous model. Several years ago I purchased a similar Sport Dog model (I forget the number) from Gun Dog Supply. I noticed immediately, as did my dog, that the stimulation level of the collar changed during our outing. Sometimes it would notch up several levels and elicit a shock that got way too much reaction and sometimes it would dwindle to nothing--even when turned all the way to the highest level. My dog does not need a reminder often, but when she does her response needs to be immediate. I experimented with setting the receiver to each of the three default levels and did not see a consistent performance of the collar. I tested the stimulation level before and after each outing on myself. It almost never was consistent at the beginning and the end. After attempting a troubleshoot with Gun Dog Support, they sent a replacement set. Much to my dismay that set had the same problem. I relented that it was just a defect of the product as a whole and hoped and prayed I did not have to use the stimulation on my dog. When the old set stopped working altogether, I went to Gun Dog Supply. The reviews on this newer model where overwhelmingly positive with no mention of the same problems I and my dog had experienced. So I ordered this set. Much to my continued dismay, this set has the same issue. Although the stimulation level swings aren't as wide, they still are not the same going out and coming back. I am disappointed. I rated it Average only because I didn't want to rate it Bad. I guess 2 1/2 stars would be my true rating. My dog is a pet, but with her champion breeding, she loves to hunt when she is off leash in the sticks and hinterland. every once in a while she needs just a nick to get her attention...not a jolt. I can't believe I am 3 for 3 with a bad set...hasn't anyone else had this experience?

When this collar works it's great, and when it doesn't the dog pays the price. I have not looked into getting it repaired or replace yet. I have used it for about 2 months. Most of the time the lower setting range 2-3 works great. A shake of Gaby's head, and she is eyes on me looking for a command, or her hearing suddenly improves. But then there are times that I get no reaction at all. 4 no response 5 no response 6 still nothing... then 7... top of the range.. nothing... then after a few taps she screeches...
I tested it on myself and found it was very inconsistent with impulse given. At times, but not always, I would get nothing on my wrist (with good contact) at level 1, 2, and 3... and zapped hard on 4...
Have also tried repeatedly hitting the signal button 4 or 5 times on setting 3. The first few times, little or no signal, then bang. This seems to happen fresh off the charger or after a few hours in the field. Sometimes it works great for days. Other times it works about every other time. My guess is poor components or shabby construction. I can't wait till I can afford something better. I will be looking a little closer at the reviews next time.

Seems like a good product but not suitable for smaller dogs like my 11# Coton. The hard plastic collar is so stiff that I had to choke Buddy a little just to attach it to his neck and remove it. Still, I put it on him for several hours a day for four days without activating it -- as recommended so he wouldn't associate the collar with the signals. First I tried the beep, the vibration, and the shock on myself. I was surprised at the strength of the shock even at its lowest setting, but I thought surely, they know what they're doing. Then I tried the beep on Buddy. He noticed it but wasn't impressed. Ditto with the vibration. Later I shocked him at the very lowest setting. He yelped and leaped into the air and tried to run from me --Somehow he knew I was responsible. For several hours Buddy cowered and slunk away from me when I tried to approach him - which he had never done before. Instead of using the collar, I'll be checking Gun Dog Supply's return policy. I hope I'll have a good report on that.
I suspect that the shock was set too high at the factory. If it were set lower I wouldn't hesitate to purchase this electronic collar for a larger dog like a lab. But I don't think this product is suitable for dogs as small as Buddy.

The SportDOG Field Trainer SD 425 is an incredibly versatile training collar and a good choice for all-around use. The SportDOG FieldTrainer SD 425 is ideal for training in the yard, field, or for hunting with close-working dogs. Both the transmitter and receiver are waterproof and submersible.
The 425 can be expanded to control up to three dogs by adding SportDOG Brand Add-A-Dog collars. The comfortable "soft coat" transmitter finish makes this unit a pleasure to handle.
The low continuous stimulation levels and gradual increases between levels on the SD-425 are particularly useful with sensitive dogs or breeds.
You can customize your SportDOG Field Trainer SD-425 to match your training preference. It comes set up in MODE-1 (a 7-level continuous + 7-level momentary stimulation one dog collar with non-stimulation tone button), but it can easily be changed into 7 different modes with different button configurations.
