Average Temperature Ranges:
Low to Medium -- 32-50 degrees F
Medium to High -- 50-80 degrees F
Most people set their Hound Heater Furnace slightly above medium. Please remember that the size of your dog house, its
level of insulation and door greatly affect the Furnace's ability to reach any of these temperatures.
Tools Required: You will need a measuring device, drill, 1 1/8" wood bit, screwdriver and three wood screws (not included).
Step 1 -- The Hound Heater can be mounted on any side wall of your dog house. We recommend placing the heater as high as possible with a minimum of at least 3 inches from the ceiling.
Step 2 -- Using the 1 1/8" drill bit, drill a hole through the wall of your dog house (a minimum of 9" from the ceiling) where the center of the Hound Heater will be placed.
Step 3 -- Carefully feed the cord all the way through the previously drilled hole making sure the cord is not kinked.
Step 4 -- Mount the heater with the temperature control knob towards the ceiling and the slant towards the floor using three wood screws or nuts and bolts. Lightly tuck the filter (included in box) in the space between the heater and the wall -- behind the temperature control knob. This will help dog hair, dirt and dust from getting in the heater and improve functionality. Clean filter on a regular basis -- we recommend monthly.
Step 5 -- Plug the unit into a GFI outlet. If you are using an extension cord, it must be a 3-wire, 18-gauge (outdoor rated) grounded plug cord. Be sure the connection is elevated off any surface and not near water.
Step 6 -- Set the thermostat to the desired temperature for your pet. (Medium setting is approximately 45-50 degrees F)
NOTE -- The Hound Heater Plus Dog House Furnace is designed for side wall mounting only. Floor or ceiling mounting can result in permanent damage to your Hound Heater. For maximum effectiveness, it is important that your dog house is insulated and preferably has a door or flap.
Because of where we live (North Mississippi), I really don't get to use dog heaters that much. We just don't get enough cold weather down here. If you have a good dog house in Central or North Mississippi, you really don't need a dog house heater.
But if you live in Minnesota or Montana or have a dog that just "likes its conveniences," this is a really neat product. Also, older dogs are just like older people and need extra care, so kennel heaters are great for them, too.
This third generation Hound Heater is a little more sophisticated dog house heater. Unlike the original Hound Heater, this one comes with a built-in thermostat. You can set it and when it gets down to a certain temperature, it will turn itself on. When it heats up to that temperature, it will cut itself off. On the older Hound Heaters, you had to buy another product to get this feature. This version also adds a fan to better circulate the heat within your dog's house.
You generally want to mount this dog house heater on the back wall with a little distance between the side walls and the ceiling. There needs to be a little space in between the heater and the walls. Also, you don't want to mount it where the dog is going to lay on top of it or roll over on it. It needs to be up above the dog.
The Hound Heater needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet. Directions are included. PLEASE NOTE: The biggest thing you want to keep in mind is that you want to make sure the electrical cord is NOT where the dog can get to it, especially if you have a chewer.
Have had unit for over a week and its keeping cats comfortable and happy. Insulated inside of house with a bubble insulation as well. Its not balmy but it takes the edge off! Its a 4x4x10 foot area being heated inside. Caging area has corrugated plastic to stop wind in winter. I leave it just below high because of the location of the house and the wind where I work. Just what I needed to my 19 yr old feline and her 14 year old kid.!
Pros
Heats adequately for animal comfort
Easy to install
Isn't hot to touch
Affordable
Compact
Cons
Air blown not as strong as I thought it would be but it works sooo no complaints from tenants.
Water and food still freeze but bought heated water bowl. They can eat the dry if wet freezes!

Hound Heater Plus

This is our 2nd hound heater that we purchased for our beagle pup. The 1st one was purchased a few years ago for our beagle that is currently 11 years old. Since our kennels are not huge, we keep the heater on low, and it keeps the temperature around 50 degrees all winter long. I would highly suggest this heater for any outdoor kennel that is enclosed.
Pros
Consistent heat, turns off automatically when temperature is reached. Easy to install.

This heater has been a game changer for my gsp!! We live in NE Iowa and I installed this heater in her doghouse just before a recent cold snap. She has a relatively small and well insulated house with a door flap, and it stayed 40 degrees or more through temps well below zero. For temps of 10 or higher I have to switch it to the medium setting or it actually gets too warm for her. Thanks for a great product!

Inspect the craftsmanship closely when you first receive it, you may have to send it back.
Pros
small enough to fit in the dog house.
Cons
Craftsmanship was poor enough that it took 2 of us approx. 2 hours jury-rigging the bent frame work and drilling new holes in the frame to get it mounted on an igloo dog house.
Even used their extra igloo mounting adapter. It required a trip to the hardware store to get longer screws and use of picture frame wire to mount it securely. Works well once it was mounted. The front shield was forced onto the back frame with such force it kinked the front edge so that the predrilled holes for the mounting screws did not line up. New holes had to be drilled and longer bolts were needed to be purchased to enable the bolts to extend threw the igloo wall.

Akoma Hound Heater
January 5, 2022
Our kennel has used Akoma Hound Heaters in our nesting boxes for many years. We recently opened a new facility in Iowa and purchased three new Hound Heater Plus units. The units were simple to install and have provided exceptional service keeping the boxes warm in our extremely cold Iowa winters. We recommend this product for anyone looking for an inexpensive way to provide a shelter heat source for any dogs that spend time living outdoors.
Pros
Simple installation
Easy to use control

We bought this for an outdoor cat, for the colder months. It's in a large dog house, and she took to it immediately! She's always cozy now. Our Lucky Dogs live in our house with us, but I would recommend this to anyone that has an outdoor pet.

Quiet and works well in the dog house

This is the third one I have purchased. I buy this one because quite frankly there are not a lot of choices out there. Here is the thing about this heater, you have to have a really well-insulated dog house. My dog is 110 Lbs so he has a dog mansion, with 110 air conditioner and now 2 heaters. I live in KS. and the wind never stops all winter long and I do mean L>O>N>G>!!! And you have to have a good house if you care anything about your pets or hunting dogs. His house is 2x4,s and particle board, R-13 insulation with overlayment and clear plastic flaps on door and I have added a pillowcase with an old window weight inside it attached above door opening and he is toasty all the time. One is enough, but I am adding another as a backup in case it fails and I don,t want him to suffer because of my poor planning. It is a good heater but if you have never had one, it is not what you think it is going to be. MUST HAVE A GOOD WELL BUILT INSULATED HOUSE! Also best customer service ever!
Pros
EASY TO INSTALL. Don,t have to mess with it , just install ,set it and you're good to go.
Cons
A little pricey

Overall great product. My GSPs love the warmer kennel! Easy install. The only change I would like to see is an actual thermostat with temperature on it rather than the 'low/med/high'.
Pros
Easy install
Doesn't take up much space
Quiet!
Cons
No temperature on thermostat which leaves you somewhat guessing.

Very nice a simple design Quality heater fantastic
Pros
Simple design
Great heater
Lifft top roof for easy access
Good size
Cons
Needs a small low brightness pLED type light and at least one medium size window.
I would not want to go and sleep in a box outside that would be pitch black inside and no way to see outside.
I have 2 dogs and neither would stay in that dog house for very long.
More than likely they would lay there with their head out through the flap door.
I would not recommend this due to no window or a light. 50/50 chance the dog would use it.

Dogs Best Winter Friend
January 14, 2021
Have only had the heater installed for a week but my shorthair seems to be a lot warmer and has more pep in the mornings. Gets pretty cold here in central Nebraska but seems to keep my insulated dog house around 45 degrees on the medium setting. I would recommend to anyone that has an insulated dog house and wants to give your dog a little help during the winter months. Less energy spent keeping warm means more energy in the field!
Pros
Thermostatically controlled.
Cons
None that I noticed.

I purchased this to replace an older model that had the 100 watt heat element. The new 300 is much more robust. I have it set to medium low and the dog house stays at 65deg, even when it's 10deg out. The heat selection switch, now located on top, is much easier to see. Installation is a breeze. Highly recommend!

January 5, 2021
Bought this heater 3 years, and recently I bought another one thinking that I would be replacing the original one as it had made it past hours/on & off cycles but 6 months later its still running strong putting put the same amount of heat as it did 3.5 years ago.
Pros
Puts out a lot of heat for how small it is.

Works great
January 2, 2021
Very simple instructions & easy to install. It works great & keeps my pups warm. Both of my dogs are big time chewers so I really needed something that they couldn't just chew up & destroy. This is made very well & durable. Even the temperature control knob has a metal cover that protects them from getting to it. The way it's designed the cord runs right through the wall to the outside of the doghouse so we put their doghouse right up against the fence & ran it straight out of the fence so they can't chew it.
Would highly recommend to anyone needing to provide heat to their doghouse or kennel.
Pros
Durable, chew proof, easy to install, cover over knob

No more late night trips to the shop
December 29, 2020
My lab and two German Shorthairs have an insulated house. When the temperatures dip down to single digits and below, it was just too cold for them. I would take them to the shop and put them their crates. This works until one has an accident and you are hooking up hoses in freezing weather and bringing a dog into the house for a bath. Not fun! This unit installed easily and when the dogs come out of the house in the morning, their ears and all extremeties are warm and toastie! Happy dogs!

Doing the Job
December 21, 2020
Installed this a few weeks ago and it is doing what its supposed to do. I have two of the older model without the fan that have been keeping my dogs warm for going on 16 years now. If this one works that well its a bargain.
Pros
Quiet. Effective. Have to play with the heat setting to get the right temperature but once its set it maintains that temperature in the houses.
Cons
Heat setting has no scale so I had to experiment to get the temperature I wanted. I have remote wireless thermometers in each house so I can monitor the temperatures.
