Training Retrievers for Marshes and Meadows Reviewed: April 17, 2011
By: Dillon Webster I have read multiple retriever books and have really fallen in love with this one. His approach to training is serious, but affectionate. I never liked the harshness of force breaking a pup; however, his slower, gentler approach not only makes more sense to me, but is also far more easy on the dog with the same results.
The book is full of the what if scenarios as well as different problems and mistakes he has encountered. This leaves no guessing as to what to do if your dog reacts a different way then normal. He pays very close attention to detail so you don\'t feel lost.
This book also lays out a basic schedule to follow. Leaving the \"whens\" out of your questioning.
Overall awesome book that I will always recommend.

James Spencer covers subjects including puppy training, basic obedience training, play retrieving,
simple marked retrieves, gun proofing, introducing birds and decoys, force-breaking, double marked
retrieves, basic blind retrieves, advanced marks and blinds, and more.
Amateur trainers have many advantages over professionals, and Spencer helps you to make the most of every one!
For example, as amateur you can develop greater rapport with your dog. You have more time-per-dog for training.
Amateurs can use "kinder, gentler" ways of accomplishing the same thing. Given a choice, few amateur trainers
would use pressure if they can get better results without it.
Spencer, well known writer and trainer, and regular columnist in Gun Dog Magazine, covers subjects including:
*Your Training Program
*Sequence/Schedule/Techniques
*Puppy Training
*Basic Obedience Training
*Play Retrieving
*Simple Marked Retrieves
*Gun Proofing
*Introducing Birds and Decoys
*Force-Breaking
*Double Marked Retrieves
*Basic Blind Retrieves
*Advanced Marks and Blinds, and more.
Throughout, Spencer considers the effect of enviornmental differences - meadows, fields, woods or marshes - on training.
A great tool and a good read!
