I prefer a battery operated bark collar over a rechargeable bark collar because I want zero down time. My dogs don't wear bark collars all the time, but I don't want to need a bark collar and not be able to use it because the battery needs charging.

The only problem with leaving the collar "on" all the time is that you miss out on the "Bark Odometer." When Tri-Tronics first told me about this new feature, I told them it was the dumbest idea I had ever heard. Then I got to use one and I got to eat my words.
The "Bark Odometer" is perhaps the coolest idea I have ever seen for a no bark product.
The way it works, you can see how many times your dog was corrected since you activated the Bark Limiter G3. If you have a dog that is barking while you are away at work during the day, you can turn the collar on in the morning and put it on your dog.
When you return in the evening, you take the collar off of your dog and turn it off.
Before it shuts down, the red indicator light will blink the number of times that your dog was corrected since you put the collar on him. This way you know if your collar is working. Too many corrections and you need to increase the stimulation level. If there were no corrections, you can either leave the collar on the same level or lower it if you think it will still keep your dog from barking.

So, I decided to find out what was going on. I set my PC microphone to record all night while I was away. Now, I just have to show her the collar when she's barking and she gets quiet. This makes the product worth the extra price. Plus, this is the only bark limiter I know of that lets you use batteries that can be purchased at any drugstore or grocery store. This is very convenient. I have to give my shepherd mix some of the credit though - it did not take her very long to figure out if she was quiet no more shocks.
I started on the lowest setting and the first couple of days I stopped counting when the odometer reached 50! I tightened the collar and increased to the next level. The next day it was 20, then 10, then 3, and 1, and now zero!
I am so encouraged by the fast progress - less than one week! - that I may consider a remote collar to teach her to stay in my yard.
Thank you for all of your help in choosing this collar - besides all of the other features, the odometer, in my opinion, makes all of the difference!

In that time frame he had a count of 30 on the odometer. Since then, he has been alone up to 10 hours on the collar and zero is the number! He has experience with invisible fencing and a correction collar, so he learned very quickly. I'm thrilled with the results and my neighbors can now sleep past 6:50 am when I leave for work!
Your existing reviews were a big help in my decision to buy this model, so I wanted to pass the good word along myself for others who are in the market. The only thing I would change would be I'd put a quick release clip on the collar……..when I get home he is so happy to see me and has to keep his composure and remain quiet until I take it off!

The only flaw is that the collar is a little big for him and it would be nice if the collar had a snap in place buckle so that you didn't have to adjust for sizing every time you put the collar on. I was thinking of trying to order the innotek 3/4 inch replacement collar and punch a hole for the 3rd probe since it only comes with 2 holes. The dogs won't bark when it has a working battery and it has skin contact. I have to shave the neck of one of my dogs for it to make contact with the skin because it is part chow. This did not teach the dogs not to bark. As soon as they figure out the batteries are weak they start barking again but the batteries are not expensive.

We had a problem with one of our German Shepherds barking excessively when we were away from home. The collar's settings and adjustments were easy to deal with, and the barking stopped being a problem before the battery ever wore out. We've used electric collars in other types of training with our dogs, and so our experience was similar to Bryan A's review--the first time, a few barks, the second time one bark. No complaints from the neighbors since. I think electric collars, used properly at an appropriate setting, are a great tool for dealing with over-excited dogs in general--it's a way to break through the excitement to remind the dog of the rules. It helps a dog regain self-control.

At level one and two, the barking continued. At level three it was less and one day at level four was all we needed to make it go away almost completely. Then we dialed back to level three and we might see one bark every other day. The only minor complaint is that the process to turn it off is too close to the process to increase the correction level. We are able to set them at the perfect level for each dog and it effectively stops them from barking. I have tried other collars but this has been the best so far. With a little maintenance, regular battery changes, and an occasional cleaning, they have held up for YEARS. I don't even remember how long I've had these collars, except I know the newest one is a year old (we got it when our puppy started with the excessive barking). I'm pretty sure the other collars are between three and five years old. I think I had to replace one once after about five years of use. A bark collar is a must-have accessory when you keep coonhounds and you have neighbors.
The collars do not stop ALL barking, but they do keep it to a manageable level. I will caution owners to make sure the dog does not wear the collar 24X7. Excessive use of the collar will leave contact sores on the dog's neck. We use them at night, generally. Also, some dogs can mistake the correction for the bite of another dog; we try not to have the dogs wear the bark collars when they are kenneled together if possible, because then they start to argue. I would not advise using these collars on aggressive dogs. It is important to set the collar at the minimum effective level for each dog; start it at level one and increase just until the dog stops its "nuisance" or boredom barking. It didn't take my 40 lb, 15 month old SM long to figure out she could not bark at the neighbors or people walking by our house (fenced yard). Once in the while she will give out one bark but correction is applied and she is quiet. I am sure that her compliance would be even better but my wife's Minature Pinscher (18 lb, 4yrs) does bark at everything. Before I got the SM I did try the Tritonic collar on the Minpin but the collar was too sensative for him and was correcting even if he wasn't barking. You were good enough to take it back. We are trying a "small dog" electric collar on the Minpin and if we are vigilant in applying correction he gets the message. However, those dogs can endure a bit of a shock before they decide it is easier to comply with your wishes than be toasted.

He was putting his house on the market. Regardless I don't appreciate barking dogs anyway. Since we are not home when he barks, we couldn't correct. First I was going to go with a cheaper product, but decided value was with quality (at least of reviews). First few days 11-13 corrections, tightened the collar, switched to the longer prongs and cut the hair over his larynx. Corrections dropped consistently over the next 3-4 days down to 1 or 0. I have not used the collar for a week and the neighbor states "Wow, that was quick". I agree. Value is in the quality. Product works. It was the first product that worked out of several that we tried. I had recently moved and my dogs had to deal with a new yard along with a new family that included a step daughter that was allergic to dogs so they could not come inside with me in the evenings. My 10 yr old male lab/chow mix was not happy and he let everybody know it. We would put them in the garage at night to cut down on the barking and neighbor complaints and tried several different collars from our local Pet Smart. The spray collar made the garage lemony fresh but did not stop the barking, their toughest bark collar would make him wince but not stop him even after shaving his fur. The Tri-tronics bark limiter stopped his behavior to the point that he modified his bark when excited to see me when I got home. He developed this shrill yip that stayed under the threshold for a corrective shock. After several weeks we were able to leave the collar off for week periods and only had to place it on him occasionally to remind him that the barking was not acceptable.
Thanks your product was worth the extra dollars and I wish I had bought it first. Though I do appreciate Pet Smart working with me to try different products at no additional cost.

However, when I take it off, she still barks. I've tried bumping it up to level 4, but she cowers down so much, I'm afraid it's too much correction. If I left the collar on all the time, I'm sure she wouldn't bark, but I don't want to do that. She's, just a hard headed dog. I have six of these collars. I am gone for up to 16 hours at work, often overnight, and have indoor/outdoor runs. I live in a subdivision, so must keep the dogs from barking while I am gone. I won’t use or recommend any other electronic collar. Tri-Tronics’ service is also excellent.

Our next door neighbors have screamed at our dogs while we are not home until the dogs can't stand to even hear them in their yard and would bark like crazy. We got that stopped with about 95% of the barking stopped. Sometimes they will still bark but they know what is coming but they just have to let it out. We are blessed now to be able to leave them out in their covered kennels during the day without worry that the cops will be called on us.

The first day I had it on level "1" and she had 75 corrections. After two days on level "1", I increased it to level "2", with moderate success. When I increased it to level "3" she stopped barking. The second day on level "3" she only had five corrections. I left it on "3" for a week, and then dropped it back to "2". The barking is still at a minimal - and very acceptable - level.

I posted to a list and received advice from all over the country, show and hunting people alike and they were quick to tell me what didn't work/ was a waste of my money. The majority who found a collar they would recommend , pointed me to the Tri-tronics BL G3. In their emails to me they advised it was the most user friendly, sturdy, "beagle-proof" and weather resistant. I also read a lot of reviews and found the biggest complaints with bark collars seemed to be that the battery life was pitiful and cost-prohibitive, or the device was poorly built and simply quite working after a short period of time. The BL G3 didn't have these drawbacks in other reviews although I did not have 100% faith in the reviews that said the dogs could learn not to bark in one day. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes on my own dogs. This has been the best purchase of the year. Out of the box and on the first dog and 2 barks later she was through with the nuisance barking. The collar has a stand-by mode that saves battery life and I've still not had to change it out. The dogs were curious about the collar the first day or two but now ignore it's existence all together and I don't think I'd even have to have it turned on now. I do keep a second collar on each of the dogs so they aren't sure which collar is the correction collar. I am sold. I will recommend this collar to any of my clients with a bark issue. Oh, and yes, I did try it on myself first. It is absolutely humane, but I don't bark anymore either.5 1008 TRI-TRONICS BARK LIMITER G3

By using the bark counter I was able to increase the stimulation level to the point the dogs QUIT barking. I then backed it down one level where it stays. Most days we get 1 or 0 barks out of each dog over a 10 hour day. This collar is also sensitive enough to trigger on loud whining, so it stops that too. What a great product. Also, she always used to bark at the ducks she was chasing while swimming, so swimming became her barking refuge... not anymore! Also, the collar is make from a rubbery type of material so it doesn't get stinky like her old bark collar would. The different settings on the collar are great. My favorite feature, though, is the ability to never have to turn it on or off. I just always leave it on and I can tell when its on because the little red light will flash when it detects motion (which is also kind of neat when I see my dog running around in the back yard at night). As the product description notes, it cuts off the power when no motion has been detected for a period of time. This helps to keep the battery life. I bought a second battery from Frys recently to replace the 1st one. The first one lasted well over a year. Love this product! His barking so much was causing breathing problems, endangering his health As long as he has the collar on (doesn't have to be turned on) he's fine. Upon reviewing my records, I note that TT will repair for $60.
I have sent as many as 5 in at a time to TT for repair. I like TT product, but I have found the TT Bark Limiter collars, as well as all bark collars, invariably break down, and have a working life of less than a year. As a result, I generally keep 2 new collars in reserve.
Amongst the dog owners that I know that use the TT Bark Limiter, this is a common view.

Not to annoying to me, but my neighbors are the complaining type. I had to do something so I purchased this collar. I liked the fact that there were multiple settings as opposed to just one strong shock. I had it on the lowest setting and the ol' girl got the point pretty quick. Now all I have to do is just put the collar on her, not even turn it on, and it is still effective. The only down side is the battery doesn't last very long, and to replace them is kind of pricey due to the odd battery size. Her collar quit working in April 2011 - a replacment battery would not make it work, called Tri-tronics and they replaced the collar free of charge because it was still under the 1 year warranty. I use the collars mostly on weekends. I know my neighbors appreciate the no barking of my dogs as they walk by. Although the collar has multiple stimulation levels, it wasn't effective on my dog unless it was set fairly high. My female would bark, get stimulated, squeal, and continue to bark, get stimulated again, and squeal again to the point where the neighbors were coming outside to see what terrible thing was happening. On lower levels, she simply barked and wasn't effected. At higher levels, she was stimulated and ran in circles like a wild dog not knowing how to turn it off. It was a vicious cycle: bark, shock, bark shock without her ever learning to stop barking to stop the stimulation. I started with the lowest stimulation and slowly increased it over days and weeks, but it just didn't work. Now, I put a regular collar on her and stimulate her manually when she barks, but it's a nick stimulation and works every time. Of course this collar only works when I'm home and can stimulate her when I hear her bark. I do leave the collar on her when I'm gone, and the neighbors tell me she is much better when she is wearing the collar, even if it's not turned on or I'm not home. However, if I leave and do not put the collar on her, she knows it's not on and will bark. So, she has a collar on almost every day. Even though many times we put them on the dogs they were quiet for awhile until they realized the units did not work. So, psychologically it worked for awhile but not anymore. We only used them in our backyard since we backed up to a school and had unusual noises during many hours of the day and sometimes at night. I think what damaged the units was the water from our pool since one of the dogs liked to swim and during the summer would be in there quite a bit. Once the seal was separated for a battery change I think it was a matter of time until the water and chlorine seeped in a damaged it. They worked very well until the unit battery change occurred. Thank you for your followup on products you sell. Hopefully you can find a way to improve these items.

Of all that I have tried theirs does work the best but for a $99.00 I think they should last longer than a year, or have a longer warranty. I have 2 that don't work at all. I have 3 that I put away, cleaned with no battery inside working fine. I pulled them back out after 6 months+ put new batteries in and they don't work at all!!! Now they want $60. to refurbish them!

- Be sure to check for the long probes in the triangular space at the base of the package before disposal.
- The strap can be trimmed but be sure to leave some room to grow if you have a young dog.
- When changing the battery, make sure the gasket is in proper position for a good seal when replacing the cover.
- Proper placement of the unit is over the voicebox or larynx. The collar MUST be tight to function properly. It should not rotate and there should be constant contact between the dog’s skin and the probes. If the dog can breathe, drink and eat normally, the collar is not too tight.
- The long probes are for dogs with thicker coats. It may be necessary to trim the hair of a dog with an extra thick coat for the probes to make good contact. Shaving is not recommended. Irritation can result from the probes pressing against the shaved skin.
- The Bark Limiter should not be worn more than 12 hours of a 24 hour period. Irritation where the probes touch the skin can result if the collar is worn too long. Wear time for dogs with sensitive skin may be shorter. Check the dog’s neck regularly when first using the collar for signs of irritation.
Desire to Bark -- Many customers are curious about the collars effect on the dog’s desire to bark. There is not a definitive answer to that question that covers every dog. It depends on the dog’s temperament and breeding. These factors will dictate the correction level required to stop nuisance barking, how often they will challenge the collar and if / how much they will continue to bark once the collar is removed.
Sensitivity -- The Bark Limiter is activated by vibration from the dog’s vocal cords when they bark. The key word here is vibration. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a bark to activate the collar. Other vocal noises produced by the dog such as whining or yawning have the potential to trigger the sensor. Inversely, the dog may be able to produce noise at a pitch that doesn’t create enough vibration set it off.

Product Safety. Clinical animal safety studies have been designed and conducted for Tri-Tronics by veterinarians and physiologists at a major
university. The scientific studies tested for possible cardiopulmonary
and epidermal effects of Tri-Tronics electrical stimulation applied to the
