Dog Training Collars Buyer's Guidepad

Dog Training Collar Buyer's Guide

At Gun Dog Supply, you can choose from around 100 different kinds of remote dog training collars from 6 different manufacturers: Tritronics, Innotek, Sport Dog, DT Systems, Dogtra, & Unleashed Technology.

Picking the right training collar for you and your dog can be a very daunting task.

I have written this guide to give you some insight into how I help folks choose the right collar without blowing their budget. Much of this guide is what you would get if you called me on the phone. This information comes from my experience using the products that we sell.

I prefer equipment that holds up over time under heavy use, and I don't mind paying a little more for it. Some dog training collars are sturdier and will last longer than others. I look at a training collar over its expected lifespan and divide the cost over that time.

Some folks are looking for the least expensive way to fix a one-time problem, and they want the most efficient way to do this. We sell these types of dog collars, too.

There are certain features I like in dog training collars, and you will get a feel for that as you read this dog training collars buyers' guide. Thanks! -- Steve Snell

Positive clicks vs. Rheostat or "free spinning" stimulation dials Dials I prefer a training collar that has easy to use dials that have clicks as you move up and down in the levels. All Tri-Tronics and Innotek systems come with both long probes and short probes. With the other brands it depends on the unit. We list all units that come with both. How much range do you need in a remote training collar?

We sell collars that have maximum stimulation ranges from 250 yards up to 2 miles. Range is something that too much will never hurt, but too little is a problem. Keep in mind that maximum range is based on "line of sight." This means that to get the full range out of a system there should be nothing between the transmitter and the receiver and t...

Of the collars that we sell the lowest number of stimulation levels selectable at the transmitter is 2 and the highest number is 127.
