Summary: |
Steve Says: Sport Dog Field Trainer SD400 -- In a short range system, the Sport Dog Field Trainer SD 400 is hands
down the best thing we have ever seen. It has everything you are
going to need. It has a wide choice of stimulation levels and a
tactile dial. You can do pretty much anything as far as training
applications and it is incredibly versatile. It is a great collar.
It has a very small transmitter, which for most of folks is good. I
am a big guy with big hands and the SD 400 transmitter is a little on
the small side for me, but not too bad. It is smaller than your
average cell phone. You can put it in your pocket or wear it on a
lanyard. You can also just carry it in your hand and it is real
comfortable.
There are not a lot of hunting situations where I say, "Hey you ought
to go with this." In most hunting situations I am going to want folks
to step up a little bit and get a longer range system. We have a lot
of folks using the SD 400 in close range hunting situations and it
works out fine.
If you are dealing with issues in your yard and you are dealing with
off leash stuff in the dog park and you just want to take your dog out
and not worry, this system works great.
This neat little system normally comes with an orange collar strap,
but since so many of our customers request a black collar strap we now
provide it at no charge. So, you'll get an orange strap and an
additional black collar strap for free.

By: Mark GGreat Product and well made! I have owned Dobermans since 1986 and wished this product was available back then. I rescued this 1-year-old male that had been obedient trained before I rescued him. He knew the commands but was stubborn on some.
Also, while walking next to fences with other large dogs on the other side of the fence he would not listen to commands and would not respond to no. heel. One short 2-second continuous use corrected this problem on level 2 and he responded to me! We even went back to the same area that day and he obeyed w/o the use of stimulation and responded to no heel. He also responds to come now with out stimulation and sometimes with out the collar on at all. I think this great progress in just a few days use. The nick feature will come in handy for advanced obedient training. Also, the price is right!5 170 Just a note to tell you how pleased I am with the sport dog 400. Reviewed: November 8, 2009

After just three weeks of careful introduction my 4 yr male Std poodle has gone from mildly annoying to a please to be with regarding commands. He is somewhat strong willed and although he new all the commands, as soon as he was off leash he was gone until he decided to return.
Now it is a pleasure to take him anywhere, he is not perfect and sometimes I have to increase the level if he decides that there is a stronger incentive. Overall there has been a dramatic change in a short period of time.
The unit seems very well made and I thought I would let you know my story.

5 115 SD-400 for my Vizsla Reviewed: March 5, 2010
By: AdamI recently purchased the SD-400 from Steve for training, Callie, my Vizsla. She is a good dog. She sits, comes, heals, lays on command. At the same time she does struggle with digging, taking food off the counter and standing on top of things in the house.
Strait out of the box I knew I had a solid product. Not only did the package include the SD-400 but also a color manual, a to the point training guide, replacement parts, extra accessories and a solid training video on DVD. Within the 24 hour initial charge time, the DVD and literature had me well on my way in getting the most out of my money.
Being the person I am, I tested the e-collar on my forearm prior to using it on my dog. The setting (1) Nick was noticeable and the setting (1) Continuous was an eight second pulsing stimulation that did not hurt but did get my attention. I continued this to setting (3). At that point I decided that I would not go over this level while training Callie.
Callie immediately responded to the lowest stimulation setting (1) by looking up and my and walking to me. I am confident the SD-400 with help my good dog reach her full potential. Thanks Steve!

By: KarenUsing this on our 1 year old Akita/Border Collie cross. She needs a LOT of exercise - taking her for long walks off leash in open fields works best but her recall was terrible. After about 3 "nick" corrections on #1 setting she is now coming instantly on command. Collar works fine in snow/cold too. I just returned from a mile walk with no lead on him and he walked to heel all the way without any correction. He is so much more attentive and wanting to please.all this with very little use of simulation, just a few times to get his attention back.(not on the just finished walk)

By: Shauneen HI recently purchased the Field Trainer 400. I have a chow/akita x rescue. She is a wonderful dog but...when she is off leash listening was not an option. I was terrified that one day she was going to get into trouble or get hurt. We have been through obedience classes but not until reading the taining manual that comes with the Field Trainer did I realize the signs that she wasn't going to be listening to me. After using the collar on one off leash walk I truly am a believer in it as a training tool, not just for retreivers or hunting dogs. I have peace of mind when we are on our walks now because I know that when I call her back she is going to come. Yesterday on our walk one of the dogs had flushed out a deer and all of them took off chasing it, Maggie took off on the run and I callled her back, it took the continous stimulation but she did return! A huge success.
I want to thank you for your website, you have done the research for us, instead of letting us fumble around wondering which item would be best all of the information is right there.

We walk the woods behind the farm and there is allot of him to sniff. While he is a good dog, getting to stay in about 30-40 yards was tough ( we hunt upland birds) I didn't want him to become the dog that is named-git back here you $%)(*&()* dog! Now with just a nick,he stays within the range and comes back with the tone ( I use the tone in conjunction with come) We are going to a pheasant hunt this weekend and I know with the excitement of other dogs, gun and birds he will be tested. But overall, the Sportdog has been a very valuable training tool.

He is now eighteen months old and never fails to come when called. I feel confident that he is safely under control now--even without his collar. He has out-grown his runaway tendencies with a little help from the collar, and has decided that being with me is more fun than being somewhere else anyhow. The collar gave me a great sense of security when I needed it.5 1587 poor receiver life Reviewed: July 4, 2010
By: TivaWhile the sportdog worked, it was reliable. After 10 months, the first receiver failed. The company was very good about sending a replacement (this time, the sportdog 800, for a low additional fee to cover the difference). But again, after 12 months, the second receiver has begun to fail. This next time, we'll go with a dogtra, because they have a reputation for greater reliability, and also because they offer a larger range of stim levels. The 8 steps with the sportdog is not enough for our purposes, because our dog finds level 2 at nick too low, and level 3 at nick too high. (We've never gone anywhere near the highest level: 8 on continuous, and this is for a pitbull with a high prey drive--level 4 can always call him off a deer chase). 3 254 SD400 Reviewed: June 28, 2011

By: Patricia Gallagher from AKHusky/German Shepherd/hound. Pet. Competition dog. Working dog. I really like this electric collar! Before I had an e-collar I couldn't get my dog to heel or come when called. The last straw was when my dog cornered an angry moose and ended up being charged several times. Now that we have the e-collar, I can call him off of moose, horses, other people, or anything. I also use it when I run in races, that way I can keep him right at my side - with or without a leash.
Another perk about this collar, is that it functions fine in water. I leave it on my dog when he goes swimming or retrieving. Also, this collar preforms well at very cold temperatures. I regularly use it at -30 to -40 degrees. It will frost up some, but I have not noticed a decreased battery life.
There is only one thing I DON'T like about this collar. I really wish that it had a "hold" switch - a button on the hand remote that would lock the buttons and prevent them from accidentally being pushed. Sometimes when it is really cold out, I need to be able to put the remote in my pocket or jacket and I would hate to have my dog corrected by accident.5 1536 SportDOG SD-400---- 02-08-2010 Reviewed: August 4, 2011

By: Ginger GrimesPit bull mix. Pet. We adopted a puppy, Burleigh, that is now around 14 months old. He is very powerful and energetic. He went through 2 weeks of intensive training right after we got him. We tried to keep a leash on him at all times, to maintain control, but the leashes were quickly shredded. We feel that he was separated from his mother and siblings too early because he does not understand the strength of his playful biting and jumping. We tried water bottles, cans of coins and screaming to no avail. After enduring countless bruises, I decided to try an electronic collar. I have it set on level three and he immediately responded positively. Within two days he waited for us to go up and down the stairs, and waited to go out and in the door. He comes immediately with the just the beep. When he has his evil puppy bursts of energy, I am able to quickly deter him. I thought long and hard before purchasing this product, and when used correctly, it is extremely effective. We are very happy, and confident we can survive puppyhood! Our dog already knew the basic commands, however would tend to be a bit stubborn in listening to them when she found something else...ie.squirrel, bird etc. We rarely use the stimulation buttons after only 2 weeks of use, only the audible button. The dog has been swimming with it on and still works fine when wet. We will probably have no need for it in the near future. The product is worth the money and I think we will get half of it back on a private re-sale. By: Kari from CALab. Pet. The SportDog 400 works great with my very stubborn 3 year old rescue lab. I found out that she actually DID know the rules, but just chose not to follow them. I know this because she behaves while wearing the collar (so I never need to correct her)! Now, she only misbehaves (charges the fence and snarls at the neighbor dogs, barks, digs, etc) when she is NOT wearing the collar.
When she needs an occasional correction (usually away from home), I use level 2 or 3. I have never had to go above 4. Because I know her to be stubborn (The first dog trainer threw up her hands in disgust with her), I was surprised that she needed such a low level of stimulation for correction. (I tried the collar myself by touching the prongs before I used it on her to make sure I felt comfortable with it. I also make putting the collar on a very positive experience. She is so happy and excited when I put it on her, because she knows fun is ahead.)
However, remember to charge it fully before going on a trip! When we took her to Fallen Leaf Lake for the first time (lots of dogs there!), I didn't realize that it wasn't charged. My fault entirely, but you should note that when the batteries are low, it still beeps like it is working for quite a while, but does not deliver the correction.
I was hesitant to buy this collar due to the price, but now I wish that I had purchased it 8 months ago. It would have saved me a lot of stress!

By: Chrissy Juergens from ID3 dogs: Beagle; Golden; lab/pointer. Pet. We LOVE our sport dog collars (all 3 of them)! We bought 2 from gun dog 1 1/2 years ago. We haven't had any problems. They seem to stay charged for a few days and if you throw them on the charger at night they're good to go the next day! Our beagle kept sneaking out the front door when people came to visit. After training him with the collar we really started to enjoy him more as a pet!!! We can take him camping and down to the river and now he comes back just with verbal commands. The collar is great when he gets out of sight or too close to the food while camping...a simple "beep" brings him back! He actually loves his collar. When he sees us grab it he does his happy dance because he know he gets to go do something fun! (with a new 10 acre yard he doesn't even need to use it around the house) I really do reccomend these collars ONLY IF you take the time to learn how to train your dog before you even think about putting the collar on them! Our lab/pointer mix has a "sensitive" personality and doesn't really even wear his...if he's out of sight with our Golden puppy we just need to tone her and they both come running! We recently purchased a collar to add onto our SD 1800 remote. It's been nice to have two collars on one remote (only thing we don't like about the new collar is that the warning tone isn't very loud on this one...we'll be contcting the company that makes the collar with questions about that!) 2 of our friends have also purchased these collars and haven't had problems,
OH, and don't forget to make sure that the tabs that cover the charging port are in before going around water!

Our dog does not have \"collar shock\"- he looks forward to wearing the collar because he associates it with our morning 3 mile walk. I almost never have to correct him with the collar - a couple of times was all it took to convince hom that it was best to \"heel\" at my side.
I use the collar for my comfort since about half of the walk is completely off leash, I see the collar as an important control should we encounter something unusual when he is off-leash,
The batteries in the collar are fantastic and go for a long time without charging. Great product- glad we selected it.

This collar is probably overkill for diciplinary use unless I start training for hunting where the range is excellent or agility training where command obedience is critical. Feists tend to 'explore' like a pointer and this has come in handy for letting him know where his boundries are. Feists are very attentive, smart dogs. I've only had to 'shock' him a few times and it really got his attention to the point that now all I have to do is use the tone. In fact, now just putting the coller on him has an effect; He 'knows'. By: P. Echezuria2 dogs: Saluki. Pet. It is necessary to first work with a trainer to ensure that your dog understands commands well, before using the sportdog collar - under supervision for the first few times. You must ensure that your dog will run to you and not in the other direction, when correcting its behaviour with the "zapper". I also recommend that the human first uses the lowest level. I have had very good results and continue to work with my salukis who were accustomed to running free in the desert in Saudi Arabia and now must learn to not chase deer when we are out walking in Texas. The Sportdog SD-400 has been very helpful in Arlo's training. I've never managed to get a dog to heel without a leash before and this guy is doing it very well now, thanks to the device. Generally speaking, at this point the only correction he needs is a reminder (the audio signal) if he is wandering too far off or not paying attention. He does still get an occasional zap (we've found level 3 to be adequate) on those occasions when some stubborn behavior is getting the best of his normal obediance. In short, we love having the training device and thank you for providing it to us!

Didn\\\'t take long at all, he knows the drill and checks in with me and doesn\\\'t chase my horses. He knows we are going to play and do fun things when his collar goes on. I was very leary about using this on my highly-sensitive young dog. I carefully followed the instructions and she has suffered no negative effects at all. She never tries to back away when I put it on. I do, however, have to put up with all the compliments on what a finely trained dog I have :)
My only comment for improvement is that I wish it was smaller. I probably could have gotten one made for a toy poodle since I've never had to turn it up past 2. If I ever replace it, I'll try to find a smaller one. As for the "hand held" device--I think the size is perfect. It it were much smaller I wouldn't be able to quickly correct.

The only thing I don't like is it seems to take a long time to recharge the battery.5 1808 SportDOG SD-400---- 12-24-2009 Reviewed: August 26, 2011

By: Laure Molitor from CODutch Shepherd. Pet. Working dog. This collar CHANGED my dog! She used to be a neurotic bundle of uncontrollable dog around cats or tennis balls. Although I was able to get her to the point where she could ignore them on leash, she was never 100% trustworthy off-leash, no matter what food I tried to entice her. Now I put a leash on her maybe once a week. With the collar, I have no fear of her running in front of cars or injuring someone's pet when I'm in urban areas. We also go up in the mountains often and she's able to run free on the trails or accompany me mountain biking without concerns of her chasing wildlife. This collar has given my dog freedom she would never have felt otherwise and allows her to visit family and friends and even go in stores instead of sitting in her kennel at home, building up energy, so THANK YOU for helping my dog get to be a dog! The fact that it's waterproof is also necessary since I have a waterdog! My only negative comment about the SD400 is there doesn't appear to be a small dog collar option with the same distance, and with my other dog topping out at 9lbs, the regular collars don't work on his tiny neck.5 2823 Field Trainer SD 400 Reviewed: October 6, 2011
By: Sampug/terrier mix. Pet. We've had the Field Trainer SD 400 about a week now ~ love it! The very moment we put it on her (our 2 yr old pug/terrier mix) we noticed an immediate change in behavior. Likely due to the product itself being on her (takes some getting used to I'd imagine). But the fact that she had calmed down immediatly was relieving to us as pet owners. It showed us she's responding to SOMETHING, it gave us hope! Whereas our commands and training alone just wasn't cutting it. We were afraid we'd have to get rid of her, we were at the end of our rope. She's a very hyper dog, no one can come over without her jumping and barking and nipping (playfully, but still it's annoying as a guest) and it's not just a little while, it will go on till our guests leave. She barks at absolutely everything she hears outside, she gets on the table, she chews my kids toys, you can't open the door without her trying to get out - just everything about her was chaos, the fun of having a pet was gone... So my last resort was a training collar... Boy oh boy am I glad I gave this a shot! It works wonders! I'm not saying our dog is "perfect" in a week, but she is soooo much calmer! She still barks a bit, she's a dog they do that.. But when her barking gets a bit much I say No, if she does it more I "beep" the remote and voila, she calms right down. I've only "zapped" her a few times, I have it set at 2, just enough to get her attention and help her understand what she's doing needs to stop. Needless to say she's quickly learning No means No. And I'm quickly learning to enjoy my dog again... Oh and would you believe at this very moment I have roofers working on our house (lots of noise!) and not a peep from my Buggy :D5 2860 Sportdog SD-400 Reviewed: August 4, 2011

What I don't like is the fact that it takes much longer to charge the battery, as opposed to the Dogtra IQ series. That's a 2 hour charge...this is an overnight charge. Dogtra also has a wider range of settings, but the audible beep is very important to me.4 1554 SportDOG SD-400---- 03-18-2010 Reviewed: August 5, 2011

Cons:
The battery on the collar seems to not last all that long, I'm an electronics engineer and I'm pretty certain it could be improved. Also I wish it could be programmed to beep when you shock so that the dog would better associate the warning beep with a shock, my dog is a half-wit and can't put the two together.
