SportDOG SD1800
The SportDOG SD 1800 is easy to use and versatile. It's designed for
anyone to use including pet owners, obedience trainers, bird hunters, rabbit
hunters, and waterfowl hunters (just be sure to look at the SportDOG SD 2000
before you pick the SportDOG SD 1800 if you REALLY like camo!)
The SportDOG SD1800 comes as a one-dog system, but you can add a second collar and a
third collar at any time in the future if you need to.
Customizing your Transmitter: The most amazing part of the SportDOG SD 1800 is the versatility in the transmitter. This unit is designed so that you can select the stimulation settings that fit your needs and you can change them if your needs change with
out having to purchase a new unit.
The SportDOG SD 1800 has 3 buttons on the transmitter and a dial to control the
stimulation settings.
The SD 1800 transmitter comes with a toggle switch built in to the
transmitter. This allows you to add a second dog at any time in the
future using the SportDOG Add-a-Dog collars.
USING THE TOGGLE SWITCH AS AN ON-OFF FOR 1-DOG SET-UP: The added bonus of the toggle switch for folks that only have one dog is that by changing the toggle switch from the Dog one position to dog two allows you to "cut off" the transmitter while leaving the collar active on your dog.
Unlike other systems that have a "0" setting on their transmitter, with the SportDOG SD 1800 + 2000 you can leave your stimulation dial set on the level you'll need, and instantly have access to that with the flick of the toggle switch. Click here to read my guide on using a multi dog collar
The SportDOG SD- 1800 comes preset to MODE-1 straight out of the box. Many
folks will like this set-up. (Lower Button: Momentary, Upper Button:Continuous, Side Button: Tone).
This gives you an 8-level continuous, 8-level momentary collar with a separate tone button
independent of stimulation for both Dog 1 and Dog 2.
I prefer MODE-5 which gives you 16 levels of continuous
stimulation. The Lower button is continuous stimulation with
intensity level set to low end of reading on Intensity Dial (1-8). The
upper button is Continuous Stimulation with intensity level set to
high end of reading on Intensity Dial. The side button is set to tone only.
This setting gives you a wide choice of stimulation levels that will
allow you to work with even the most sensitive dog. You can also use
this mode in a two dog set up using the toggle switch and the
Add-A-Dog extra collar.
If you prefer to use momentary stimulation than you would like MODE-6.
This gives you 16 levels of momentary (1-8 low and high) with a
separate tone button.
These features are perfect for bird hunters. I use my remote collars
to train. For training, I need a collar with a wide choice of low
level continuous stimulation. I also need high levels for stopping
the "unwanted chase"
The SportDOG SD 1800 transmitter is small enough that it isn't in my way, but
it fits in my hand and is durable. It has the "tactile" feel in the
transmitter dial that I want. I can change levels without looking at
the transmitter. I can also select which dog I want to correct using
the toggle switch and never take my eyes off the dog.
I can also operate it one-handed. Using my thumb, I can change levels
at the dial and I can operate the buttons. This makes life easy. No
need for two handed operation that you get in some many of the high-end collars on the market today. I always have something else in my hands when I train. I don't want to have to put down anything to operate my transmitter. Period.
I also need a multi-dog system. I use the collar on the neck and I use it on the belly for teaching "whoa." I also sometime like to run three bird dogs at the same time. There isn't another collar on the market that will do all of this.
Because of the customizable transmitter, you can use the SportDOG SD1800 as a
training collar AND as a hunting collar. I use the MODE-5 (16 levels
of continuous stimulation "two dog") set up to train.
When I get ready to run three dogs at the same time, I quickly switch
over to MODE-7 (8 levels of continuous, 8 levels of momentary with one
button for each dog)
SportDOG SD-1800 ONE-DOG MODES
- MODE-1: 8 levels continuous + 8 levels momentary + separate tone button
- MODE-2: 8 levels continuous + a level 8 instant "hot" button for dangerous situations + separate tone button
- MODE-3: 8 levels continuous + a "plus 2" button that allows you to increase the stimulation level by 2 levels without changing the dial + separate tone button
- MODE-4: 8 levels of continous stimulation with tone + 8 levels continuous no tone + a tone only button
- MODE-5: 16 levels of continous stimulation + a tone only button.
- MODE-6: 16 levels of momentary stimulation + a tone only button.
SportDOG SD-1800 TWO-DOG MODES
- MODES 1-6: from above using toggle switch to move between the ADD-A-DOG collars.
SportDOG SD-1800 THREE-DOG MODE
- You can add 2 ADD-A-DOG collars and use the SD-1800 as a 3-dog collar.
- MODE-7: 8 levels continuous + 8 levels momentary using toggle switch to choose momentary or continuous, the dial to select level, and the 3 buttons to choose between 3 dogs.
