Steve Says: ALFA 209 Primer Pistol

Using a .209 blank pistol is a great way to save a few bucks:
  • 209 shotgun primers are very inexpensive compared to other blanks.
  • 209 shotgun primers are pretty easy to find locally.

We DO NOT sell the 209 primers since they are VERY expensive to ship because of additional handling fees. Make sure you can get them locally. Any good gun shop will have them for folks that reload shotgun shells.

Double Action means that you can "cock" the starter pistol and fire it or you can pull the trigger without cocking the hammer. It will fire either way - that's Double Action.

This blank pistol is our highest-quality primer pistol. This is what I use for my dog training.

  • Alfa Blank Pistols: Which One Is Right for Your Dog?

If you're serious about training a hunting dog, a quality blank pistol isn't optional — it's one of the most important tools you'll buy. I've been doing gun introductions for a long time, and I can tell you that gun shyness is preventable. Almost always. Most of the dogs I've seen develop gun shyness problems got there the same way: somebody rushed gun introduction, or they did it wrong.

Blank pistols are part of how you do your dog’s introduction to gunfire the right way.

The advantages of blanks over live ammunition are significant. You can fire a lot of shots.. You can work in areas where you'd never be comfortable with a real gun. And it's a lot safer — for you, for the dog, and for anybody else around. You can gun condition a dog with live rounds, but why add extra risk and all those limitations when you don't have to?

    The Three Calibers

We sell the Alfa Blank Pistol in three calibers: the .22, the .209, and the .32. Let me save you some time — for the vast majority of you, the Alfa .32 isn't even worth considering. It's primarily for a small number of field trial participants and track and field folks. .32 blanks are expensive, and it is loud. Cross it off the list.

That leaves you choosing between the .22 and the .209.

The Alfa .22: My Personal Recommendation

The Alfa .22 is our most popular pistol, and if someone asks me to just pick one, this is it.

The advantage of a .22 is that you have options with blanks. My favorites are acorn crimp blanks — they're small, they look like little acorns, and they're quiet for a .22 blank. When you're introducing a young dog to gunfire, you want to start low on the volume scale and work up gradually. Acorn crimps let you do that.

From there you can step up to CCI short blanks, which are a nice, solid, loud blank when you need more volume.

The ability to control volume based on where your dog is in the process is what I like most about the .22.

    The .209: The High-Volume Option

The Alfa .209 uses shotgun primers, which are extremely inexpensive and easy to find locally at most gun stores that carry reloading supplies. If you're doing a lot of training and firing a huge number of shots, the economics of the .209 make sense.

The trade-off is that there's only one volume setting: loud. That means with young dogs doing early gun introduction, you don’t have as much control over the volume. You have to start out further away from the dog and move in very gradually to avoid any issues.

One other thing to know: while the primers are cheap to buy locally, they're expensive to ship and regulated differently than blanks. You can't just order a small quantity online,so you’ll have to purchase them in higher quantities.

Most professional trainers I know have both a .22 and a Alfa .209. They use the .22 for puppies and early work, then move to the .209 for regular training once dogs are conditioned. If you're at that level, you'll probably end up there too. For the average bird dog or retriever guy who's going through a couple of dogs over the next five to ten years, the .22 is a solid choice.

    Safety

A blank pistol looks like a firearm, and therefore should be treated like one. "It's just a blank" is not a reason to get careless. There's residue, there's gas, there's a flash, and they are loud — point it away from people and dogs. I shoot down behind me or up in the air, always away from everybody. Wear ear protection. Wear eye protection. Wear gloves.

A Few Other Things Worth Having

Get a holster. Sticking a pistol in your pocket works until it doesn't — a good leather pistol holster on your belt keeps your blank pistol where it belongs and means you're not digging around for it when you need it.

Alfa pistols also have a ring on the handle for a lanyard if you want to tie it to your belt loop.

The orange grips are intentional too. They help identify it as a blank pistol at a glance, but more practically: if you drop it in the field, orange is a lot easier to find than black.

Every Alfa comes with a hard shell case and a cleaning brush. Be sure to keep it clean. A lot of these blanks are black powder blanks, and residue builds up. Clean your pistol on a semi-regular basis, keep a little oil on it, and it will last you a lifetime. Most of the problems we see with blank pistols trace back to one thing: people not cleaning them.

    Why Alfa Blank Pistols?

There's a big gap in the blank pistol market between cheap and quality, and that gap matters. The inexpensive pistols are inconsistent and they don't hold up. The Alfas are built on an actual pistol frame, they have a swing-out cylinder that makes reloading fast and simple, and they come with a limited lifetime warranty covering parts and manufacturer defects. We’ve sold Alfas since 2010, and have thousands in the field. They're reliable, and reliability is what you need in a training tool.

Alfa’s aren’t cheap. But this is a piece of gear you buy once, take care of, and have for the rest of your training career. That's the right way to look at it.

Not sure about your training situation? Any questions, give us a call: 1-800-624-6378. We're happy to help you find the right setup for your dogs.

    A rock-solid blank pistol
    May 27, 2025
This blank pistol is very well built, smooth operating, and should last a very long time. After using other blank pistols for retriever training -- and discovering that some have various flaws in design and manufacturing -- this one is rock-solid overall, and I expect it to endure well beyond the rest of my lifetime.
    Pros
    • All-around smoothness of operation: cylinder release and rotation, casing extraction, cocking and trigger pull. The lanyard ring is an important but often overlooked feature. The manufacturing tolerances and quality are commendable.
    Cons
    • I've not experienced any negative qualities.

Great for Track & Field Officials
    April 20, 2025
I recently purchased this gun to use as a track and field official. The ammo is inexpensive. The gun has been very effective for the three meets I've used it for this season.
    Pros
    • Easy to handle and load.
    Cons
    • One issue - the Fiocchi primers do not always fit into the revolver's chamber, so I had to go to another brand.

Simply wore out the primer pistol I bought somewhere else. This was recommended to me by a highly respected trainer, so I tracked it down. Built extremely well, made to hold up. Very pleased.
    Pros
    • I LIKE that it's got some weight to it. It feels like you're holding a real pistol, not a dime store cap gun. This thing will last until my training days end.
    Cons
    • I have none.

    Just what I needed
    March 12, 2023
Needed a new pistol for field trialing and training. Thought it might be a bit louder than my old 209 primer pistol but my dog is used to hunting and it was perfect and functional. No problems or misfires. Arrived in a few days with regular shipping so could use it that weekend. Thanks for great service and timely delivery! Completely satisfied.

    First impressions are excellent
    November 17, 2022
I'm a pro trainer and have used several brands of primer and blank pistols over the years and none have held up, some malfunctioning almost from the get go. These were all much less expensive and several people told me to bite the bullet and get the Alfa. Well built. Functions smoothly and flawlessly so far. Get the holster. To much gun for a pocket. You get what you pay for and so far I'm happy with the product. Would have given 5 stars but I haven't used it long enough yet.
    Pros
    • Seems like a very well made product.

    Great blank gun
    June 9, 2022
We use this blank gun in our training program and it holds up much better than other models we have tried. The primers can matter though as we found clarinex primers gummed the gun up a lot but other primers did not.

    Alfa 209 Starter Pistol
    June 5, 2022
Needed a starter pistol for dog training and hunt tests. You will be able to find cheaper models than the Alfa but they will not match the quality, and reliability of it. I purchased the 209 primer model. Have used it for about a month now and am very happy with it.

    • Ease of use, reliability.

Solid and well built. Nice holster.
    April 19, 2022
Probably the best built training pistol I have ever owned. Now if we could just get some 209 primers from GDS, that would be even better.
    Pros
    • Solid construction. Good grip. Nice holster.
    Cons
    • Not a con, per say, but I wish GDS would get some 209 primers back in inventory.

Great dog training pistol for the shotshell reloader
    February 11, 2022
Good quality, Very happy with the purchase. If you already reload shotshells, you should have 209 primers available and not have to worry about getting a separate supply of blanks for dog training. Plenty loud for the application.
    Pros
    • Compact and fits in a jacket pocket. Nicely made, quality manufacturing.
    Cons
    • If you don't reload, you'd need to find a source of 209 primers locally. Perhaps one of your hunting buddies reloads and can help you out.

I have an Alfa that I used for probably three seasons. It has stopped revolving to the next blank. I am really disappointed as I thought this brand and model costing over $200 would be durable. It lasted only a little longer than the last THREE cheap pistols I owned. I want one to last!

A professional tool for your dog training needs
    September 28, 2021
Revolver arrived quickly and had obviously been cared for before delivery, coming with preservative oil all over the parts.Cleaned oil off, dry fired, and several days later actually used the revolver.Worked flawlessly. Revolver is very well made and is a high quality arm. Double action fire is smooth and "lock-up" is perfect. Single action fire is equally flawless. To be frank, it has a better trigger pull than my Colt Detective Special.
    Pros
    • Well made, a professional tool. Smooth double action trigger pull. Smooth single action lock-up and trigger pull. I would anticipate this arm will last a lifetime for the average hunter-trainer.
    Cons
    • Heavy to carry, but, that's what you get with a quality tool such as this. A good belt for your holster will help support this weight, just as when carrying a handgun.

    Great starter pistol
    September 24, 2021
This 209 starter pistol is perfect! This is the first I have owned, but I have borrowed many different models. The Alfa 209 surpasses them all. Easy to clean, great feel in the hand, smooth action, perfect weight. It is the first starter pistol that didn't make me feel like I was fumbling with a kid's cap gun. ( I am 6'4, 250lbs)I used it recently for 2 Junior hunt tests, to great effect. I familiarized myself with it and did some steady training with my dog before the tests. I went in with total confidence in the Alfa 209. Zero fear that it would fail or hang me up.
    Pros
    • -Feels like a standard pistol in the hand
    • - Double action
    • -Easy to clean
    • -comfortable textured rubberized grip
    • -ejector makes unloading a snap
    • -swing out cylinder makes loading easy
    Cons
    • -full frame, so a holster would be better than a pocket.
