Steve Says: .22 Blank Pistol Starter Kit

    Transcript from Steve's Video:

We're looking at the Alpha blank pistols. Alpha is a large-frame blank pistol. It's built on an actual gun frame, so it's got a lot of weight to it, a lot of feel. One of my favorite things about all the Alphas is that they come with orange handles, which makes them easy to find when you drop them in the field. They've also got the orange plug, which is required on a blank pistol.

Alpha is a swing-out cylinder. What that means is you have a button to press. And when you open it up it stays in the cylinder. It has an ejector so that when your blanks are out you can fire them out. Comes with a lanyard ring, which I highly recommend that you strap it to yourself once it's in your holster. This is a large frame pistol. It will fit any of our large frame holsters.

The Alpha comes in three different calibers. This is the .22 caliber. This is the .209 primer. And this is the .32 caliber.

I prefer the .22 because you have three different volumes of blanks that you can use. You can use the small crimp blanks. You can use a medium crimp. And then you can use the loud Winchester .22 short blanks. So that gives you an increase in volume, which is great when you are working with a puppy.

The .209 is probably the most popular we sell, and that's got to do with the price of the blanks. .22 caliber blanks are a little on the expensive side as far as per shot, where .209 primers are a good bit cheaper. The downside of .209 primers is that they are harder to come by because they cannot easily be shipped. So if you are getting a .209 pistol, you need to make sure that you can buy the primers locally. It's just a standard shotgun primer. I prefer CCI's. Most gun stores are going to have them, places that specialize in reloading.

.32 is the least used of the ones that we sell, and a lot of that has to do with the blanks. They are for track and field and for field trials. Certain pointing dog field trials require a .32 caliber blank. I generally do not recommend them for folks that are dog training. The blanks are incredibly expensive.

All three of the Alpha pistols are what are called double action pistols. What double action means is that you can either cock the pistol and then fire it or you can fire it without cocking it.

All of the Alphas come with a hard-shell case. They also come with a cleaning rod. Highly recommend that you keep your blank pistols clean. Typically, if we see problems with them it's folks that just fire them all the time and never bother to clean them off. Any standard gun solvent is going to take care of them. It also depends on the blanks that you fire. The .22 shots are a very dirty blank and they require that you clean it on a more regular basis.

I switch back and forth. With young puppies I use a .22 caliber because I can get that quiet. With older dogs I use a .209. Most people are not going to want that. So a lot of it depends on what you are doing. If you are using a .209 with puppies you just want to back off from them a good bit more and gradually introduce them to the gunfire. I would not take a .209 primer. A .209 primer is almost as loud as a .22 short. It might be as loud as a .22 short. For most people, the .22 is really the way to go. It just depends on how many blanks you are firing.

These pistols cover all of our upland and retriever folks. And really good for rabbit hunters, coon hunters. Anybody that's going to be shooting around a dog, they need to gradually introduce the sound of gunfire to them. And blank pistols are the best way to do that. They're much safer than using an actual load. So you want to gradually introduce gunfire. We've got a couple articles on the website about that.

Premium starter pistol with perfect fit holster
    July 23, 2023
Worked great for my Vizsla during his first Hunt Test. I continue to train with it and will use with confidence during our next events.
    Pros
    • Quality piece.

    Alpha pistol starter kit.
    May 10, 2023
The Alpha pistol performs very well with both .22 short blanks and the small "acorn" blanks I am currently using with my lab pup. I'm glad I got the starter kit with the holster because at 1.5lbs the pistol is heavier than I would ever wear on a lanyard around my neck. The strap on the holster was too short to fit over the back of the hammer of the pistol and snap in place. But by rubbing water into the strap I was able to stretch it so it would snap in place. Once dried I rubbed in a good coat of mink oil on the strap and the and the rest of the holster..
    Pros
    • Works great with different size blanks and always fires regardless of the direction I'm holding the pistol (up, down or to the side).
    Cons
    • A little heavy but the holster addresses this issue.

Very nice, well made pistol. Wish it could've been an 8 shot due to its size, but other than that, I'm very pleased.

Training my golden for senior hunt trials and after I hit the order send remembered I needed to replace my training pistol. I emailed them, they added it immediately to my order so I did not have to pay additional shipping and it arrived quick. I love the ability of reaching Gun Dog Supply via email if I need to add anything that I forgot. You can't do that anywhere else. They were right on it and shipped it immediately and I didn't have any interruption in my training.

    High quality blank pistol
    June 13, 2022
Read Steve's comments and other's reviews before I made the purchase.

They were spot on. The Alpha 22 is a well made blank pistol. Feels real solid in your hand. The sheath was also a good move. I keep the pistol on my belt when training the dog.

I bought the 22 shorts which is all that was in stock for the blanks. Since I've never used the long blanks I don't have a comparison. But the shorts get the job done. Plenty loud enough to freeze the dog.

This is not a budget pistol. But cry once and you'll be happy for a long time.

    Nice Field Trial/Training blank pistol.
    January 28, 2022
Everything is great except the case does not close properly when the pistol is in the holster. Had to remove some of the foam padding and it is still not closing properly. The plastic is also a little to light weight (cheap). Will have to go purchase a more rugged case.
    Pros
    • Nice heavy pistol. Not cheap.
    Cons
    • Case is lightweight and doesn't close properly when pistol is in holster.

    Solid starter pistol kit
    May 5, 2021
Sturdy construction, perhaps more than needed for a starter pistol. Large grips make it easy to handle. Kit is a good buy as it includes a well-made holster.
    Pros
    • Solid construction
    • Good rubber grips
    Cons
    • A bit heavy and bulky
    • Given the size, should be an 8-shot cylinder

Review for Alfa .22 Blank Pistol Starter Kit
    September 29, 2016
The starter pistol itself is great. You can tell it's a quality pistol that will last a lifetime the second you first hold it. But the holster that came with the kit is garbage. The snap on the inside of the holster is in a place that scratches the side of the gun, then the first time I was able to force the gun all the way into the holster to be able to snap the strap closed securing the gun, the snap broke. I had to order the nylon holster Gun Dog Supply offers as a suitable replacement.

Great deal on the whole package including holster. I would recommend this to friends. I especially like the orange grip as a safety feature. A big plus for me is it can fire full-size blanks which I can pick up very inexpensively at Home Depot or Lowe's.

Review for Alfa .22 Blank Pistol Starter Kit
    February 11, 2016
Product was as described. Appears to be very well made using good materials resulting in a relatively heavy, but nicely balanced/easy to handle pistol. Easy to load and unload. Trigger pull is very good...similar to my Ruger .22 revolver when cocking/firing single action, and a pound or so more when pulling trigger for double action firing. No misfires, handles the short acorn blanks and longer .22 blanks with no problem. It is suggested to point the pistol down when firing the acorn blanks as they may displace out of the cylinder ...that is what I have done with no misfires...haven't tried firing in any other position. Holster is well made of thick leather (stiff but is breaking in OK with leather conditioner and use). There is an extra snap on the back of the belt loop side of the holster that I haven't figured out its use, but otherwise a very solid and useful holster. It was also nice that everything arrived sooner than expected. Gun Dog Supply is very easy to do business with, they follow up to insure all is OK and they have good price/value compared to other product sources.

First rate pistol, no different than a fine revolver. Ejector is a nice addition. Much louder than old pistol with same loads. Double action works smoothly. Lanyard ring is very handy. I lose pistols regularly even with the holster.
