Dog Training Collars Warranty Guide

All of the remote dog training collars that we sell come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Gun Dog Supply covers this period of the product. If you have a problem inside the first 30 days contact us, and we will get it straightened out.

After the first 30 days, the manufacturer's warranty picks up. Comparing warranties from one company to another can be tricky.

Tri-Tronics and SportDOG have very simple warranties that last for a set period of time (one to two years depending on the product). After that period is over, if your system needs out of warranty service it can be repaired for a fee.

DT Systems and Dogtra have a "Lifetime" warranty on many of their products. These products are completely covered (parts and labor) during the first year or two. After that, you will have parts covered, but not labor.

Petsafe products have a one-year parts and labor warranty but they require a service fee with warranty repair in the first year (costs are dependent on the processing time and the desired shipping options).

Many Petsafe products have a "Limited Lifetime Warranty." After one year from date of original retail purchase, they will repair, replace or upgrade your product at a fixed rate based on the component.

To me, the "Lifetime" concept isn't that different from what Tri-Tronics and SportDOG offer since you will be paying something for the service. The difference is in how much you are going to pay.

Which type of warranty is better?

Well, that depends on how you look at it. Repair prices will increase over the lifetime of your unit, but wholesale costs and service fees will also go up. Repairing electronic components will always be expensive and if you plan on using your unit for many years (5 to 10 years) you should plan on having to spend some money on it in the future no matter which warranty you go with.

Also, keep in mind that electronics will improve over time. If you have an older system that needs repair, you may be better to purchase newer technology for a few more dollars.

I look at warranties as a way to protect the consumer from faulty products and manufacturer defects (both uncommon problems in the remote collar industry)

We recommend that you register your collar with the manufacturer at the time of purchase. Some systems include warranty cards or you have the option of registering online at the respective company's website. Some of the warranty protections (such as the DT Systems "Lifetime" warranty) require that the product be registered within 30 days of purchase.

The following information was copied from the respective manufacturers' websites in 2013. We will update this information as warranty coverage will change from time to time. If you have questions on warranty comparisons we recommend that you check the company websites or call them directly at the numbers provided.

We have also removed warranty information about products that are no longer made by these companies to save space. If you have questions about older units, give us a call or check with the respective company.

Most warranty situations will require you to ship the unit to the manufacturer for repair or replacement. We recommend that you ship your collar via a carrier with tracking ability (FedEx, UPS, etc.) and that you insure your collar for replacement value.

One-Year Consumer Limited Warranty

Non-aviation products are warranted to be free from defects in materials or workmanship for one year from the date of purchase. Within this period, Garmin will, at its sole option, repair or replace any components that fail in normal use. Such repairs or replacement will be made at no charge to the customer for parts or labor, provided that the customer shall be responsible for any transportation cost. This Limited Warranty does not apply to: (i) cosmetic damage, such as scratches, nicks and dents; (ii) consumable parts, such as batteries, unless product damage has occurred due to a defect in materials or workmanship; (iii) damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, water, flood, fire, or other acts of nature or external causes; (iv) damage caused by service performed by anyone who is not an authorized service provider of Garmin; (v) damage to a product that has been modified or altered without the written permission of Garmin, (vi) damage to a product that has been connected to power and/or data cables that are not supplied by Garmin or damage to a product that has been connected to AC adapters and cables that are not certified by UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and are not labelled as Limited Power Source (LPS). In addition, Garmin reserves the right to refuse warranty claims against products or services that are obtained and/or used in contravention of the laws of any country. This product is intended to be used only as a travel aid and must not be used for any purpose requiring precise measurement of direction, distance, location or topography. Garmin makes no warranty as to the accuracy or completeness of map data.

Repairs have a 90-day warranty. If the unit sent in is still under its original warranty, then the new warranty is 90 days or to the end of the original 1-year warranty, depending upon which is longer.

This Limited Warranty also does not apply to, and Garmin is not responsible for, any degradation in the performance of any Garmin navigation product resulting from its use in proximity to any handset or other device that utilizes a terrestrial broadband network operating on frequencies that are close to the frequencies used by any Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) such as the Global Positioning Service (GPS). Use of such devices may impair reception of GNSS signals.

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE WARRANTIES AND REMEDIES CONTAINED IN THIS LIMITED WARRANTY ARE EXCLUSIVE AND IN LIEU OF, AND GARMIN EXPRESSLY DISCLAIMS, ALL OTHER WARRANTIES AND REMEDIES, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, STATUTORY, OR OTHERWISE, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, STATUTORY REMEDY OR OTHERWISE. Garmin retains the exclusive right to repair or replace (with a new or newly-overhauled replacement product) the device or software or offer a full refund of the purchase price at its sole discretion. SUCH REMEDY SHALL BE YOUR SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY FOR ANY BREACH OF WARRANTY.

To obtain warranty service, contact your local Garmin-authorized dealer or call Garmin Product Support for shipping instructions and an RMA tracking number. Securely pack the device and a copy of the original sales receipt, which is required as the proof of purchase for warranty repairs. Write the tracking number clearly on the outside of the package. Send the device, freight charges prepaid, to any Garmin warranty service station.

Radio Systems and its authorized resellers (who display the appropriate sanctioned logos) only sell new products in original packaging. Products purchased from unauthorized sellers, including unauthorized Internet sites, as well as used, refurbished or “as-is” products, or products not in their original packaging, will not be covered by our warranty, or receive any consumer support.

WHAT IS COVERED: Radio Systems Corporation (“Radio Systems”), owner of the PetSafe Brand (“PetSafe”) warrants to the original retail consumer purchaser who purchased a PetSafe product from an authorized reseller of PetSafe products, and not to any other purchaser or subsequent owner, that its PetSafe product, when subject to normal and proper residential use, will be free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of one (1) year from the purchase date. An “original retail consumer purchaser” is a person or entity who is the original purchaser of the product, or is a gift recipient of a new product that is unopened and in its original packaging. When serviced by PetSafe Customer Service, PetSafe covers labor and parts for the first year of ownership commencing on the purchase date; after the first year, a service or upgrade charge will apply with regard to replacement of the product with new or refurbished items at PetSafe’s sole discretion. Under no circumstances will PetSafe be liable for any non-PetSafe labor charges or any expenses whatsoever in connection with the removal, repair or installation of either the original or replacement component(s) relative to in-ground fence installation, kennel installation, pet door installation and other permanent, semi-permanent, or fixture type installations on the original retail consumer purchaser’s property.

DISCLAIMERS: This non-transferable limited warranty is in lieu of all other express warranties. PetSafe expressly disclaims and excludes all other warranties, express or implied, except as follows. PetSafe does not authorize any other person or agent to make any other express or implied warranties. The implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose are limited in duration to one year from the purchase date. Some States do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitation may not apply to you. MAKING A WARRANTY CLAIM: To obtain warranty service, call the PetSafe Customer Care Center. In the United States or Canada, 1-800-732-2677; in Australia, 1800 786 608; in New Zealand, 0800 543 054. Pursuant to this non-transferable limited warranty, PetSafe will replace the part with a new or refurbished part. This non-transferable limited warranty will then apply to either the new or refurbished part for the remainder of the original non-transferable limited warranty period. Replacement as provided under this non-transferable limited warranty is the exclusive remedy of the consumer. Neither labor to remove the part nor labor to install the refurbished or replaced part is covered.

GOVERNING LAW: This non-transferable limited warranty shall be governed by the laws of the State of Tennessee, U.S.A., and by the laws of the United States of America, without application of conflicts of laws principles. Furthermore, the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods is hereby excluded in its entirety from application to this non-transferable limited warranty. Jurisdiction and venue shall be exclusive to the courts of Knox County, Tennessee.

This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights that vary from State to State. PUMP WARRANTY: Fountain replacement pumps when purchased individually have a 90-day warranty.

NYLON PRODUCT WARRANTY: All nylon products can be replaced as a one-time courtesy for a $7.95 chew fee. Contact Customer Care to ask about a replacement.

For purposes of this limited warranty, “PetSafe Certified Refurbished Products” means buy-back products, returned products, pre-owned products, and/or scratch & dent products that PetSafe has:

  • Fully tested
  • Refurbished by replacing any defective modules identified during testing
  • Thoroughly cleaned and inspected
  • Repackaged (including appropriate manuals, probes, wire, new boxes, etc.)
  • Re-inspected prior to being sold


  • PetSafe Certified Refurbished Products may have small cosmetic blemishes. PetSafe warrants to the original retail consumer purchaser who purchased a PetSafe product from an authorized reseller of PetSafe products, and not to any other purchaser or subsequent owner, that each PetSafe Certified Refurbished Product will be free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of ninety (90) calendar days from the original date of purchase. During the warranty period, PetSafe will, at its option, replace with new or refurbished products or parts, any products or parts determined to be defective. In the event of a product defect, these are your only remedies. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights, which vary from State to State.

    This limited warranty covers only product issues caused by defects in material or workmanship during ordinary consumer use and does not cover product issues caused by any other reason, including, but not limited to, product issues arising out of or related to commercial use, acts of God, misuse, limitations of technology, or customer modification of any part of the PetSafe Certified Refurbished Product. This limited warranty does not cover consumables, such as treats, batteries, or fuses.     This non-transferable limited warranty does not apply to products purchased from unauthorized sellers, including unauthorized Internet sites. All express and implied warranties, including without limitation any implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, are limited in time to the term of this limited warranty. No warranties, whether express or implied will apply after the expiration of the limited warranty period.     NOT COVERED UNDER DOGTRA WARRANTY The removal of serial numbers from any Dogtra products will void the warranty. The warranty is void if the unit has been altered or an unauthorized person has damaged the unit while attempting repair work. Issues of replacement and refunds on units purchased less than 30 days from an authorized dealer must be addressed to the dealer directly. If the products purchased from an authorized dealer are after 30 days from the date of purchase, please send the units to Dogtra for service and repair.

    Dogtra DOES NOT offer warranty for products that have been bought secondhand or as a resold product. Dogtra DOES NOT replace defective units or provide refunds for products purchased from us after 30 days from the date of purchase. Dogtra DOES NOT cover the cost of shipping outside of the Continental United States. Dogtra DOES NOT cover the cost of repairs and replacements due to misuse by the owner or dog, improper maintenance, and/or lost units. Any water damage on the Water Resistant Transmitters of the 175NCP, 180NCP, 200NCP Series, 1400NCP Series, 1500NCP Series, iQ Remote Trainer, and BALL TRAINER, and the Water Resistant Receivers of the RRS, RRD, RR DELUXE, and BALL TRAINER will not be covered. All replacement costs for either the transmitter or receiver will be the owner's responsibility.

    Battery replacement by the customer during the first two years of the Platinum Limited Lifetime Warranty, and the first year of the 2-Year Limited Lifetime Warranty and 1-Year Comprehensive Warranty, is not recommended. If the customer chooses to replace the batteries, any damage to the unit during the change-out by the owner will void the warranty.

    Dogtra reserves the right to retain and discard any parts or accessories that have been found damaged upon replacement and repair.

    REPAIRS

    If the unit is malfunctioning, please refer to the "Trouble Shooting Guide" in the Owner's Manual and call customer service at 1-888-811-9111, for technical support before sending it to Dogtra for Service. The cost of shipping products under warranty back to Dogtra is the customer's responsibility. Dogtra is not responsible for units damaged or lost in transition to Dogtra. Dogtra is not responsible for loss of training time or inconvenience while the unit is in for repair work. Dogtra does not provide loaner units or any form of compensation during the repair period. A copy of the sales receipt showing the purchase date may be required before warranty work is initiated.

    One Year Warranty

    D.T. Systems manufactures products designed and built to last, and we stand behind our workmanship. All D.T. electronic collars and launchers come with a full one year warranty from the date of purchase (with receipt proof of purchase information to be provided by the customer). This warranty covers any manufacturer's defects not caused by misuse, abuse, or normal wear and tear. Simply send in your defective unit and D.T. Systems will repair or replace it at no charge (please see below for further details).

    What is covered:

  • D.T. Systems One Year Warranty covers all parts to be free from manufacturing defects for as long as the unit is held by the original owner.
  • Labor on all repairs will be covered.
  • Return ground shipping (inside the continental United States) to the customer is covered.

    What is not covered:

  • Lost parts or parts that malfunction due to misuse, abuse, improper maintenance, or incorrect handling are not covered. D.T. Systems has the right to determine what is and is not a warranty issue.
  • Damage from dogs chewing or wear and tear from excessive field use is not covered.
  • Our warranty does not cover the cost of shipping the unit to our repair center. Expedited or special return shipping is not covered, but available by request for an extra shipping fee. International shipping charges are not covered.

    Limited Lifetime Warranty

    In addition to the one year warranty, many DT electronics are also covered by the D.T. Systems Premium Limited Lifetime Warranty. This warranty is the best warranty offered in the industry and is free to participating U.S. customers (a completed warranty registration card accompanied with a copy of your receipt must be returned within 30 days of original purchase). This changes our normal one year parts and labor warranty to a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects on parts and a one year warranty on labor. Please see below for further details on the Limited Lifetime Warranty.

    How the Limited Lifetime Warranty works:
  • To quailify for the Warranty, you must fill out the warranty registration card which came with your system and mail it (with a copy of your sales receipt) to D.T. Systems within 30 days of purchase.
  • Your unit must be sent to D.T. Systems for all warranty issues. D.T. Systems has the right to determine what is and is not a warranty issue.
  • There is no charge for parts or labor for the first year on any of our lifetime warranty products.
  • When the product's one year labor warranty expires after the first year, there will be a normal labor charge for any repair under the lifetime warranty program should your system be in need of service. Labor charges will vary depending on: 1) the system model and 2) the severity of the repair needed.
  • When your unit is sent in for repairs, any defective part(s) that need replacement will be free during the lifetime warranty period.

    What is covered:
  • D.T. Systems Premium Lifetime Warranty covers all parts (except batteries) to be free from manufacturing defects for as long as the unit is held by the original owner.
  • Return ground shipping (inside the continental United States) to the customer is covered.

    What is not covered:
  • Rechargeable batteries have a one year warranty from the original purchase date and are not part of our lifetime warranty.
  • Lost parts or parts that malfunction due to misuse, abuse, improper maintenance, or incorrect handling are not covered.

  • Parts needed for repair that are no longer available (These parts can be unavailable due to extinct technology, laws, regulation, etc).

    WHAT IS COVERED: Radio Systems Corporation, hereinafter referred to as SportDOG, warrants to the original retail consumer purchaser who purchased a SportDOG product from an authorized reseller of SportDOG products, and not to any other purchaser or subsequent owner, that its SportDOG product, when subject to normal and proper use, will be free from defects in material or workmanship for the “Warranty Period” applicable to the particular product. The Warranty Period will vary based on the product purchased. The various SportDOG products and their respective Warranty Periods are listed below unless otherwise specified in the product manual. An “original retail consumer purchaser” is a person or entity who is the original purchaser of the product from an authorized reseller of SportDOG products or is a gift recipient of a new product that is unopened and in its original packaging. When serviced by SportDOG Customer Service, SportDOG covers labor and parts for the Warranty Period commencing on the purchase date; following the Warranty Period, a service or upgrade charge will apply with regard to replacement of the product with new or refurbished items at SportDOG’s sole discretion. The limited warranty is non-transferable and shall automatically terminate if the original retail consumer purchaser re-sells the SportDOG product or transfers the property on which the SportDOG product is installed. In the event of a product defect, these are your exclusive remedies.

    WHAT IS NOT COVERED: This non-transferrable limited warranty does not apply to products purchased from unauthorized sellers, including unauthorized Internet sites. In addition, this non-transferable limited warranty does not provide protection against, and SportDOG will have no liability under this non-transferable limited warranty for, any damage to or defects in the products caused by any animal, loss of product(s), failure, defect or damage caused by events and situations beyond normal exposure conditions, including, but not limited to: commercial use misuse, abuse, neglect, improper installation or installation not in accordance with SportDOG’s instructions, use of non-SportDOG accessories, impacts of foreign objects, acts of God, abnormal or improper use, improper storage, attempted repair or service by anyone other than SportDOG Customer Service, accident, alteration, defects in or failure of the surface the SportDOG product is installed in or upon, discoloration or other damage caused by pollution, sunlight, other environmental conditions, mold, dirt, mildew, or exposure to harmful chemicals and any other cause not involving defects in material or workmanship in the SportDOG product.

    DISCLAIMERS: This non-transferable limited warranty is in lieu of all other express warranties. SportDOG expressly disclaims and excludes all other warranties, express or implied, except as follows: SportDOG does not authorize any other person or agent to make any other express or implied warranties. The implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose are limited in duration to the Warranty Period for the particular product. Some States do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitation may not apply to you. SportDOG also disclaims and excludes all liability for incidental, consequential, punitive, direct, indirect, special or any other damages arising out of or connected with the purchase, use or misuse of this product or for the breach of any express or implied warranties or breach of contract or otherwise. Some States do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you.

    Purchaser assumes all risks and liabilities from the use or misuse of this product.

    Furthermore, SportDOG will not be liable for any loss, damage or injury resulting from delay in delivery of replacement parts or for any failure by SportDOG to perform covered repair work due to circumstances beyond SportDOG’s control.

    REGISTERING THE PRODUCT:

    Within thirty (30) days of purchase, please go to www.SportDOG.com to register your purchase. A sales receipt from an authorized reseller of SportDOG products shall be required to obtain warranty coverage. Please keep this information in a safe place.

    Sit Means Sit remote trainer systems and Sit Means Sit additional receiver collars have a Warranty Period defined as the lifetime of the product, with the exception that batteries provided with these products have a warranty limited to one (1) year from the date of purchase. For Sit Means Sit remote trainer systems and Sit Means Sit additional receiver collars, within the first year from the original date of purchase, there is no cost to replace malfunctioning equipment. After one year from the original date of purchase, there is a non-refundable service charge to replace equipment.

    Lion Country Supply Bird Dog Trainer 800 remote trainer systems have a Warranty Period of two (2) years from the date of purchase.

    Within the Warranty Period, there is no cost to replace malfunctioning equipment. After the Warranty Period has ended, there is a product replacement fee to replace equipment.

    Replacement equipment comes with a 90-day warranty from the date that the replacement equipment is shipped by SportDOG to you.

    MAKING A WARRANTY CLAIM: To obtain warranty service, call the SportDOG Customer Care Center. In the United States or Canada, please call 1-800-732-0144.

    Pursuant to this non-transferable limited warranty, SportDOG will replace the part with a new or refurbished part. This non-transferrable limited warranty will then apply to either the new or refurbished part for the remainder of the original non-transferable limited warranty Warranty Period. Replacement as provided under this non-transferrable limited warranty is the exclusive remedy of the consumer. Neither labor to remove the part nor labor to install the refurbished or replaced part is covered.

    PROPER PRODUCT USE:

    This product is designed only for use with domesticated animals; do not use this product for any other purpose. However, the specific temperament of your animal may not work with this product. We recommend that you do not use this product if your animal is aggressive. If you are unsure whether this product is appropriate for your animal, please consult with your veterinarian or certified trainer before you use this product. Please see the instruction manual for additional important information.

    GOVERNING LAW:

    This non-transferable limited warranty shall be governed by the law of the State of Tennessee, U.S.A., and by the laws of the United States of America, without application of conflicts of laws principles. Furthermore, the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods is hereby excluded in its entirety from application to this non-transferable limited warranty. Jurisdiction and venue shall be exclusive to the courts of Knox County, Tennessee. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights that vary from State to State.
