CUSTOMER REVIEWS SUMMARY
Pros:
Durability & Strength: Biothane is highly praised for its durability, ability to withstand rugged conditions, and long-lasting quality. It doesn’t fray, tangle, or absorb dirt or moisture, making it ideal for wet, muddy, or snowy conditions.
Italian Bronze hardware ensures a strong connection for corrections and control during training.
Ease of Use: Lightweight and comfortable to handle, even in wet conditions. It is easy to grip, and the flat shape prevents tangling in thick brush or grass. The smooth surface helps it glide through rough terrain without catching.
Visibility: The bright color (usually orange) is highlighted in reviews for its high visibility, making it easy to spot even when dirty or in dense fields.
Comfort: Gentle on your hands, preventing rope burns. The cord is also easy to grip even when wet, although some trainers recommend gloves in slippery conditions.
Versatility: It’s highly recommended for various dog training scenarios, including tracking, recall, obedience, and water training. The absence of a handle prevents snags in dense brush and allows free movement.
Cons:
Slippery When Wet: A common issue is that the cord becomes slippery when wet. Adjust your grip or use gloves.
Heavier Than Expected: Some users feel the check cord is a little heavier than expected, which can slow down smaller dogs or those not accustomed to dragging a heavier cord during training.
Conclusion:
The Flat Biothane Check Cord is highly regarded for its durability, ease of use, and visibility. While there are minor concerns about it being slippery when wet, its weight, and the lack of a loop on the end, it remains a highly recommended product due to its overall performance for dog training.
I purchased the 30' Tufflex check cord so that I could practice long line work with my Clumber Spaniel Wil, who I don't yet trust off lead in the field. It's very sturdy but also lighter than other long lines I've owned. It's hard to see in the photo because the grass is tall but the cord is bright and easily visible. I'm planning on purchasing more of these check cords as gifts for my training buddies!

Durable but heavy
November 29, 2024
We were looking for a bright orange check cord to use for training. This check cord is bright, easy to clean, it doesn't hold moisture it wet conditions which is nice and the hardware is durable. Unfortunately there is no loop on the end of the end cord, so it can easily slip through your hands when it is fully extended. It is also very HEAVY, we were surprised at how heavy it is. Maybe it won't be such a big deal for some users, but after the heaviness is anyone after your using it for a while. If this check cord had a loop on the end and it was less heavy it would be perfect.

Solid tool for training
July 15, 2024
I got a new pup this year and was in need of a new check cord. I talked to my breeder friend, and he recommended this style. 30' length. The hand feel of the material is very nice, almost like bridle leather. It handles well when wet. Snag can be bothersome if it zips through your hand. I've put it away wet, and it's been fine. I actually left it outside in the rain to clean it off one day. The brass is robust and smooth functioning. I like to loop it over my hand in a self arresting knot so the dog can't slip away unless I let her. We sometimes use this while dog walking the neighborhood, I was worried about it showing wear on the gravel & pavement, but it's still solid miles and miles later. Sometimes I wish it was 5' longer, but 50' would be a lot to wrangle. We even did shallow water training with it and it worked exceptionally well. I train with others and sharpied my name on it, it's still steadfastly there. Having no handle or hardware allows it to slide through the brush really well, but it's easier to train in grass than brush fields so you can focus on your dog not the check cord.

Very smooth, flexible, lightweight check cord for a young dog < 30#.

Exactly what I wanted and arrived quickly. I would let a young dog 'nibble' on it though, especially with baby shark teeth!
Pros
Flexible, lightweight, easily cleaned
Cons
Can easily slide through your hands if you don

Amazing check cord!
March 1, 2024
This is a great invest for anyone! Very well made cord that you will not have to spend a day pulling briars out of after you've been in the field. Strong material and well stitched gives you confidence when giving corrections on a hard headed dog towards the end of range if needed to get the point across of who is in charge. It does get slick in moisture though making it a little difficult to keep a hold of.
Pros
Very sturdy allowing for firm corrections if needed
You never have to worry about picking briars out of it
Cons
Not the easiest to grip in wet conditions however cheap rubber grip gloves improve the grip

Best Check Cord / Long-line
February 23, 2024
When we got our first dog, we cheaped out and got the cotton/nylon long lines. As a bird dog, she drug that through everything under the sun and it began to deteriorate quickly. This long line is incredibly good quality and lasts. The rivets and brass definitely make it stand out from others. Our dogs love it!
Pros
- Great quality
- Ultra durable
- Weather proof
- Scratch resistant
Cons
Always get the longer than you expect. 30ft is a great length.

I purchased to give my dog more leeway other than a retractable leash. I find it easier on him, less tugging. I purchased the 30 foot lead. The only thing I may have done differently was order the 40 foot one.

Easy to see, not easy to handle in the cold
January 25, 2023
After an old, flexible poly/nylon lead succumbed to my dog biting through it, I ordered this one as a replacement. I was quite comfortable handling the old lead and letting it in and out on walks, but it was easily knotted and could deliver a killer rope burn/cut, if my dog caught me off-guard and bolted. This replacement lead is a great bright color, is not likely to get knotted or caught if you drop it entirely. However, living in Anchorage, it is stiff in cold weather and not as easy to loop in and out in my hands as I adjust my dog's distance from me. I am also disappointed that if I step on it to anchor my dog, it is stiff enough that it can slip from under even my studded boot. Something about it being stiffer also has me accidentally getting my foot through it n a dangerous situation more often than the older, poly/nylon lead I had. I suspect it will be better to handle when the weather warms, but not sure I'd buy this one again.
Pros
Choice of great bright colors
Choice of lengths
Heavy duty clip
Material doesn
Cons
Stiff in cold weather
Hard to stop/anchor with foot to hold dog short while using hands
Hard to loop neatly in hands and handle smoothly without tripping myself somewhat regularly

TufFlex Check Cord
September 7, 2022
Would give 4.5 stars. Was told it was indestructible, my dog got it caught under the bucket of the tractor and the outside split. The inner core is holding strong. The outer material sometimes snags but it is really a great cord. Will definitely be ordering another!
Pros
Inner material strength
Stays clean
Does not tangle or knot
Cons
If it tears it may snag on softer foliage

July 20, 2022
I like the hi vis color and cleanability. Suprised about no hand loop but its solved a long term problem which is the loops catching on something while the dog is running leash on in an area where he could get snagged. Now I can make my own loop in knot form as needed or tack to form my own permenant

Slippery when wet!
April 30, 2022
I am pleased with this line. It has great visibility, runs smoothly through grass and brush without tangling up and is light weight yet durable. My favorite part is how easy it is to clean and keep odors from taking over the storage area. My shorter woven line requires a sudsy soak and some hang time after a wet training day but this TufFlex line just wipes clean. The only downside is that it is very slippery when wet! Nearly lost control after a solid tug from my hard running boy. An adjustment in my grip solved the problem but it caught me off guard on the first use.

Light weight
High Visibility
Smooth
Easy to Clean

Great for Training and Hunting!
February 27, 2022
We purchased this 30 ft. line from Gun Dog Supply, and we've been very happy with our purchase thus far! Our dog is just a little over a year and this cord works wonders in keeping her within a safe range of us.
Pros
Easy to clean, durable material, no more rope burns on my ankles, easy to see in dark forests, keeps dog at a safe distance and helps as a training aid.
Cons

Exactly as described
January 20, 2022
This check cord is durable, seemingly non-staining, and doesn't seem to get caught up on a lot when the dog is running around. Great check cord! The only issue is its cost. It's justifiable as I don't believe you'll have to replace this check cord over multiple dogs.
Pros
Durable and non-staining.
Cons
Price point. Hard to justify over buying some rope and making your own.

Great check cord
December 28, 2021
I got the 10' cord on closeout and I liked it. It does not get nearly as wet as the cotton cord that I had, and it slides thru the grass and over deadfalls much better than the cotton cord. It has a good feel in your hand and does not burn like a nylon cord might. I would buy it again.
Pros
Stays dry
Slides through grass and thickets easily
Feels good in your hand
Cons
None really that I have found

Excellent check cord
December 28, 2021
This check cord is nice quality and does what it's supposed to do. I live in the desert, so any type of rope material picks up cactus spines and other pointy stuff. The TuffFlex check cord hasn't picked up any cactus spines thus far!The TuffFlex check cord does a pretty good job of not getting hung up on all of the brush in the areas I hunt. It is a cord, so it will get hung up on really thick nasty brush, especially when the dog is an over zealous 1.5 year old. I bought the 30 foot, but will probably get the 50 ft and the 10 ft as well. Shipping was top notch and fast as always. Thanks GDS.

Bright but soft grippy covering.
December 6, 2021
Might work for a 45+ lb dog. My dogs are 20 lbs give or take a few. Outer covering is soft rubber. Hard to pull through brush once they zigzag through a few trees/bushes the dog is stuck. Guess I'll buy some rivets and make some cool leashes.
Pros
Bright easy to see
Strong
Cons
Soft covering creates a lot of drag through brush.
