The book gives good ideas for training scenarios, like bumper piles to teach dogs not to shop on blind retrieves. The force fetch methodology is a bit old school, using ear pinch pressure. I have used Bill Hillman's approach which doesn't use an ear pinch and have had good results. Overall the book gives good methods.

Smartwork is a very easy book to follow. It allows me, a novice in the world of dog training, to train my dog in a very easy way. It provides pictures as well as detailed instructions. A must have if you want to train your own dog.

I already have Smartwork II, but have a new dog who needs to step back a bit in training. I love his drills, and I love the fact it is so convenient to take to the field to set up your plan for work that day. One of my best training books.

Any amateur that is training a retreiver for either competition or just as a hunting companion should have this book....and they need to read it leisurely at first and then go back and read it closely. It's well worth the money. Nothing I've seen yet in this price range has everything...but Smartwork is written in a easy to read and understandable way. The book has a few extra pages after every chapter to take notes. I plan to use it as one of my training tools...
