Features of the Garmin ASTRO 430 + T5X Combo
High Visibility Design -- Orange handheld casing gives added visibility making the Astro 430 harder to lose in the field.
LED Beacon Lights -- Beacon lights are built into the T5X Astro collar for low light conditions or night use. Visible up to 100 yards.
Cross Compatibility -- The T5X tracking collar is compatible both with the Astro 430 AND Alpha handhelds. Note that the T5X will only have tracking capability when used with the Alpha. You can also track Alpha TT15X, TT15, TT15 MINI, and TT10 GPS collars with your Astro 430 handheld, although you won't be able to activate the remote training functions.
GPS and GLONASS Tracking -- The Astro 430 and the T5X collar utilize both GPS and GLONASS satellites for increased sensitivity. The T5X's top-mounted antenna gives you improved signal reception, and the antenna's orange color makes it easy to distinguish during competitions that don't allow stimulation, tone, or vibration.
AKC Competition Approved -- The AKC Performance Events Department has approved the Garmin T5X collar for use in pointing breed field trials and hunting tests.
Regular AND Long-Range Antennas Included -- You get both regular and long range antennas both for your Astro 430 handheld AND your T5X GPS collar. That's 4 antennas altogether! Configure your system to meet your specific needs.
Hunt Metrics -- Hunt Metrics dog performance data shows distance traveled, time afield and more so you can train your dog more effectively.
Rescue Mode -- When the battery on a tracking collar dies, finding a missing a dog gets a lot more difficult. When the collar battery drops to 25% life, RESCUE MODE changes the update rate to a 2-minute ping to extend battery life which gives you the maximum amount of hours to find a lost dog. Rescue mode is not the default setting. You have to turn it on under SETTINGS. I can't think of a good reason NOT to run your collar in rescue mode because there's no downside to using it.
Multi-Dog Tracking -- Track up to 20 dogs with additional Garmin T5X collars. Tracking range is up to 9 miles, delivering location data as often as every 2.5 seconds.
Preloaded Mapping -- The Astro 430 comes preloaded with TOPO U.S. 100K maps
MicroSD Slot -- You can use the MicroSD slot to add TOPO U.S. 24K, City Navigator, and more (each available separately), or add more memory by installing a blank MicroSD Card.
Live Laptop Tracking using BaseStation -- Using BaseStation, you can take your handheld while you're tracking dogs and plug it into your computer, letting you view your dogs on your laptop's screen. HOW TO: First download Garmin's Base Station Software. Then plug your handheld into your computer's USB port to see the Tracking screen on your computer. We've got guys that are working out of vehicles and they are tired of looking at a small screen all the time. They want to set up a computer in their vehicle and be able to view the tracking. You still use a handheld to track, but view your dogs on your laptop screen instead of a small handheld. Garmin says it'll track on the computer "real-time," but it's the same update rate that you have on your system -- 2.5, 5, 10, 30, or 120 seconds between updates.
Downloads -- Using the Waypoints and Tracks and the Dog Tracks feature from the Astro Handheld you can download your days hunt into your PC using either MapSource or Motionbased.com to see your hunt on a topo map or Google Earth. This allows you to see the ground that you and your dog actually cover in a day's hunt on a map.
Covey Counter -- The Garmin Astro also allows you to mark the exact location of your coveys using a special waypoint feature. This will allow you to place your coveys on a map and mark the time of day, elevation, number of birds in the covey and number of birds taken from a covey.
Icons -- Astro also comes with waypoint icons designed for hunting, letting you mark and identify additional waypoints such as your truck, hunting lodge, food plots, cover, ATVs and other outdoor-related features.
Additional Uses -- While the Garmin Astro is designed for the hunting dog, many of our customers that don't hunt but enjoy spending time outdoors with their dogs and allowing them to run off leash will find the Astro incredibly useful.
Garmin ASTRO 430 + T5X Combo Batteries
The Astro Handheld unit uses AA batteries (not included). Average run time is 20+ hours.
The Garmin Astro transmitter and receiver have a "line of sight" range of up to 9 miles using the included long-range antenna.
The Astro communicates using a VHF radio signal between the Dog GPS collar and the Handheld GPS unit, so to get the full range out of a system there should be nothing between the transmitter and the receiver.
Realistically, this isn't going to happen in most of the places that we spend time with our dogs, so the actual usable range will be MUCH less than 9 miles depending on hunting conditions, including weather, terrain, and the presence of cover.
The TT15X is a track and train collar while the T5X is tracking only. Both collars are compatible with the Astro 430, all four Alpha handhelds, and the PRO 550 Plus. They can be tracked from multiple handhelds at the same time and can be run at the same time as TT10, TT15, and T5 collars.
Please note that Garmin's "X" collars are NOT compatible with the Astro 320 or 220.
The "X" collars have the same physical design as Garmin's regular size collars, but with several upgraded features:
Longer Battery Life -- up to 80 hours of run time using the 2.5 second update rate
Garmin Express Update Option -- you can update your "X" collar's software with Garmin Express
Sleep Mode -- you can put your "X" collar into sleep mode using Alpha handhelds, extending battery life even longer
Collar "About" Screen -- on Alpha 200i and 200 handhelds you can check your "X" collar's software version
Extended Battery Life
The biggest improvement on these collars is longer battery life.
Every time we talk with Garmin, battery life is a topic. With the "X" collars they have drastically increased battery life and added options to stretch it out even longer if needed.
We are seeing between 60 and 80 hours of run time off a single charge with a 2.5-second update rate. Setting your collar on a 5 or 10-second update rate will push it past 80 hours, and a 2-minute update rate will give you over 130 hours.
This will be especially helpful for folks with big running dogs or in lost dog situations. An "X" collar set in Rescue Mode drops down to a 2-minute update rate when the battery reaches less than 25% capacity, giving you the maximum possible time to locate a lost dog. More battery life = more time.
There are few things more useless than a tracking collar with a dead battery.
Keep in mind that this extended battery life option doesn't change my take on charging your collars.
I still recommend that you charge them after every use.
I want you to have the maximum battery life available if you need it. The only way to make that happen is to charge your system before each use. Also, keep in mind there has not been a change in the handheld batteries, so you will still need to charge them pretty much every night anyway.
Updating Your Collars with Garmin Express
With the "X" collars, you can now update both your collars and your handheld with Garmin Express.
This eliminates the need to have multiple programs installed to keep your system up-to-date. I prefer Garmin Express for several reasons, but not being able to update everything from one program has been a hassle. Now every new dog tracking product can be updated using Garmin Express.
Sleep Mode
The "X" collars have a Sleep Mode option just like the Garmin MINI collars.
Sleep Mode allows you the option of using your Alpha handheld to shut off both radios in the collar (GPS and handheld communication), significantly extending battery life. The collar searches every few seconds for a turn-on signal. Once you give the signal from your handheld, the radios turn back on and the collar returns to normal communication mode.
Note that you must be within range to activate the collar.
This is a specialized feature that really isn't going to be used by most of our customers. It's designed for situations where either you can't get to a dog in time to pick him up and are forced to leave him out overnight, or you are intentionally leaving him out and want to preserve battery life.
We have a few folks that like to leave their collars on their dogs all day while hunting, even when moving around in their vehicle, and Sleep Mode lets them conserve run time. I'm not sure if it's still necessary with the longer battery life, but the option is there.
Folks with livestock protection dogs will like the Sleep Mode feature. It will give you extra-long battery life while still keeping up with the location of your dogs.
"About" Screen
The "X" collars give you the ability to view your collar software data on your Alpha 200i or Alpha 200 handheld.
This means you can check the software version from your handheld without the use of a computer. Not a giant deal, but it's a feature that we had back in the Astro 320 / 220 days, and it's nice to see its return.
I'm extremely pleased with these new collars.
We always want more range, longer battery life, and more durability from our tracking collars.
While we only get one of the big three updated here, it's an important update -- perhaps the most important -- and it will make finding lost dogs easier.
Garmin ASTRO 430 Handheld
Garmin has updated the tracking only Garmin Astro with their latest and greatest software.
When Garmin first introduced dog tracking via GPS they used a 5 second update rate (how often the collar reports its location) and a maximum 10 dogs tracking per handheld.
While this was fine for most of us, many folks were looking for more dogs per unit and everybody wanted faster updates (even though some of us didn't know it at the time).
When Garmin introduced their combination ecollar GPS tracking system, the Alpha, they moved to a 20 dog option with a 2.5 second update rate.
The only issue with making this change was that the folks running Astro systems could not track the collars of the folks running Alpha systems.
While this wasn't the end of the world, it was a bit of a hassle for those of us that like to hunt with others and be able to keep up with their dogs along with our own. Folks had to buy new systems with a combo tracking / ecollar, even if they did not want or need the remote trainer.
All of this is now fixed with the Garmin Astro 430.
The new 430 works off the same 2.5 second update rate and 20 dog option that Garmin uses with the Alpha. This means you can now run a Garmin Astro and track collars running on an Alpha unit at the same time.
The Garmin Astro 430 will track T5X, T5, and DC50 collars (regular and mini). It will also track TT15X, TT15, and TT10 collars (regular and mini -- no training functions).
There are a couple of downsides, but that is to be expected with any major changes to technology.
The Astro 430 is NOT compatible with Astro 220 or Astro 320 handhelds
The Astro 430 will NOT be able to track DC20, DC30 or DC40 collars
I've owned birddogs for a long time and I lost a dog a couple of years ago. I should have purchased a tracking collar much sooner. I asked a friend who has been working and training birddogs for a long time and he recommended that I look at the Garmin ASTRO 430 and also recommended that I consider Gun Dog Supply. I did both and am glad I did. I'm still learning all of the features but it has worked great right out of the box.

Great collar with super fast tracking capabilities. You MUST have rechargeable batteries for the handheld controller and ALWAYS carry and extra set when doing long all day hunts. It will burn through them. Small price to pay for the most accurate/fastest tracking collar manufactured. Highly recommend

Great GPS Tracker
April 2, 2022
Both the handheld and the tracking collar work great and are easy to use. Easily keep track of my dog. I would recommend considering getting the rechargeable batteries for it. Otherwise you might be going through a lot of AA batteries if you’re using it on daily basis. If you use only occasionally that might not be an issue.
Works really well, easy to use, and robust.
No real cons I've experienced.

A homer in for Garmin
January 11, 2021
I bought the Astro 430/t5 for my German Shorthair and it has worked great for upland hunting. We went to South Dakota with several friends and it was great to be able to see my dog working in front of all of us. In many of the convenience stores, bars, and hotels were posters of lost dogs. With up to a 9 mile range, I was never concerned about where my dog was.
Alerts when dog was on point. Todo map was great for looking over new hunting area. Compass gave instant direction and distance to dog.
The only reason for 4 stars is because the receiver is not rechargeable but uses AA batteries unlike my other Garmin products that are rechargeable. Better carry extra batteries.

Love this product
September 3, 2020
This is great product if you have a big running dog or hunt/ train with thick cover around. Fast updates on dog location and lots of great features most I’ll never probably use but they are available. Extremely long battery life on the collar have used it for 1 month+ and haven’t had to recharge it yet. Use good AA batteries in the controller though or you will end up changing them every couple of weeks.
Fast updates
Long range
Ease of use
Sturdy clip
Collar has great battery life
Nice mapping features
Uses cheap AA up fast
Even though you can choose the type of dog ( pointer in my case ) it will still say your dog has treed an animal sometimes.
Compass can be a little finicky and you will need to recalibrate it from time to time.

Easy to use and it is awesome to know where my dog is at all times
October 12, 2016
I really love the peace of mind the Garmin Astro 430 gives me while hunting. I mainly hunt Grouse and Woodcock so we are usually in heavy cover. I have always hunted with a bell and would have the difficult task of finding my dog when she went on point. I have had her 5 yards away and could't find her. With the Astro I always know exactly where she is.
The on point notification is awesome. The dog direction and distance screen leads me right to my dog. I know when I am getting close so I can start looking for my dog and also try to look for possible openings for shooting The only draw back I see so far is that the battery system for the hand held could be better.
Over all it is easy to use and it is awesome to know where my dog is at all times no matter if she is on the move or on point. Thick cover doesn't seem to be a problem. I would recommend this to anyone who likes to hit the woods with a dog.

I buy all of pointing dog equipment from Gun Dog supply. They own and understand pointing dogs, have a good line of products, get the shipments out quickly and completely guarantee their products no questions asked. I particularly like the YouTube videos Steve puts out regarding features of products and how to set them up properly. It makes everything much easier rather than having to search through all the manuals. Overall, one of the best companies I deal with on any product line.

Great for an Aging Dog
October 1, 2022
My 12 year old English Springer Spaniel, losing his hearing, has lately not been able to hear my calls or whistles. When we became separated this summer while trout fishing, it became apparent that measures were necessary, especially with the upcoming pa’tridge season. I called Gun Dog Supply, spoke with Steve, explained the situation, and he recommended this product. It has surpassed my expectations, and I am well pleased.

Just what I was looking for
September 16, 2022
There are lots of options when looking for an electronic sporting dog collar. I always start an inquiry like this one at Gun Dog Supply. Excellent review of the capabilities of this combination which was exactly what I was thinking about. I needed a gps location collar for hunting grouse in hilly, heavy cover with a young, still too rangey shorthair. She has always responded to my whistle, but this will give me some peace of mind hunting new territory. Everything about the search, transaction, directions for use, and fulfillment of the order was top notch. A great product and process.
A great tool for single or multiple dog tracking. Intuitive, durable, does what I need
None really, the dog adapts to the new device and antenna quickly

Garmin Astro 430
April 5, 2021
Well i had problems locating my 10 month old english pointer so I purchased the Garmin Astro 430. When it came in the mail i got it out and went to my office to figure it out. I wanted to set it up on my computer first and became discouraged when i seen how technical it was. i packed to up to return that day. Then i decided to try it on the dog before i returned it. When i let the dog out of his box. he took off and i quickly realized how effective the garmin tracker really is. Within 20 minutes the handheld beeped and read that FESTUS was on point 40 yards away. Festus was on point and flused a covey of quail right over my head. IT WORKS. It would have been a mistake to return or exchange it because off it accuracy, quality and capability. Definitely worth $650 in my opinion. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! STEVE SNELL DEFINITLY KNOWS THE BEST DOG TRACKERS OUT THERE!!! THANKS STEVE!!

Incredible Product and the best site to purchase high dollar devices
October 9, 2020
Gun Dog Supply is the only place to purchase these high dollar, no discount/coupon items. When Garmin quoted a 5-8 week turnaround Gun Dog Supply literally shipped the same day. I find that astounding that the actual manufacturer does not keep their items in stock. Gun Dog Supply is the only place I will shop for my dog related items.
Fast shipping, great video descriptors that help to select the exact model and item I needed
Bark detect does not work. I've asked my 5 teammates who have this same device if they ever got it to work and the answer was no. Garmin adds a disclaimer that "it does not work in all areas" so I guess the end result is, it doesn't work anywhere.

The 430 works great if that is the only device you are using. I tried running both the 430 and 320 together and ran into some issues with it. If we just talk about the 430 then performance is great, but I'm sure there are a lot of hunters out there like myself that need to know about the issues when trying to run both handheld units together.
