![]() ![]() Steve Says: Garmin ALPHA 300i + TT25 ComboThe new Garmin Alpha 300 and Alpha 300i handhelds are the exact same unit except the 300i has inReach capability. These new GPS dog-tracking handhelds are very similar in look and feel to the Alpha 200 models. It's the same case, size, and setup, but the 300 and 300i have new features to make them more user-friendly than the 200. The Alpha 300 series have a better battery life, a better screen, and a better charging system. The 300 series also has the ability to use WiFi to update both the handheld and collars, and the new menu interface is easier to use. The Alpha 300 and 300i can track and train up to 20 dogs. The fastest fixed update rate is 2.5 seconds, but when using the new dynamic tracking, it'll automatically adjust the update rate based on your dog's activity. Less movement = longer update rate. The Alpha 300 and 300i offer multiple map options including TOPO maps, downloadable satellite imagery, HuntView pre-programmed micro-SD cards, and Garmin Outdoor Maps+ (available by subscription). They have 18 levels of continuous and momentary stimulation plus non-stimulating vibration and tone options. You can create custom setups for each dog, letting you set different stimulation levels based on each of your dog's needs. New Features on the Alpha 300: As far as collars go, we have two new tracking collars: the T20 and TT25. The T20 is a tracking-only collar, and the TT25 is a tracking and training collar. New TT25 and T20 Collar Features: An orange-topped GPS antenna identifies the T20 collar as tracking only. These collars are one size fits most -- it's not too big for your small dog, and not too small for your big dog. The collars can now be updated using WiFi. When you plug them in to charge, they'll automatically check for updates and install them as needed using your WiFi network. Compatible Collars: Compatible Handhelds: Steve Snell Accessories for your Garmin ALPHA 300i + TT25 Combo

Game Changer
January 21, 2025
I haven't upgraded my collars for at least 12 years, so when it was decided to upgrade to the 300I had everything I needed. The battery longevity is outstanding, lasts several days without recharging. The In Reach feature makes all the difference in the world, I'm able to hunt alone without the fear of losing cell service. The location of my dogs and stimulation with the simple user friendly handheld is spectacular. I sure wish I would of bought it sooner.

I use the 300 with my two GSPs. Works perfectly so far for training and tracking. Durable, nice weight when hooked to you, great battery life, quick connect time with satellites and TT25 collars. Would buy again if ever needed another and have suggested to others that have now changed over to the Garman 300.

Great system but be aware….
July 23, 2023
I have lost dogs for many days (without usage of a gps collar) and am very aware and appreciative of the longer battery life of this new collar to allow for long search times if needed. This system has a mode called 'sleep mode' that allows you to put the collar to 'sleep' and consume far less battery power. It is meant to be used when you are not actively tracking your dog. When you want to begin tracking your dog again you enter the 'awake mode'. The issue that I confirmed with GARMIN helpline is that you must be in RF antenna sight line to wake the collar up. It is not commanded to wake via GPS. If you hunt in hilly country as I do it is likely that the dog will be out of RF range and therefore the collar will be stuck in sleep mode and useless to track your dog. The GARMIN product manual does not make it clear whether this mode is commanded via RF or GPS antenna. If it were via GPS then there would be very little limitation putting the collar into awake mode. As it stands I will not be using 'sleep/wake' mode. I want others to know this limitation as well.

Alpha 100 to Alpha 300
February 8, 2026
After having several Alpha 100's, I decided to upgrade. There is a bit of a learning curve, but I like the improvements in the Alpha 300. The off season is the time to get proficient. I use with the TT 25 collars. 3 upland dogs. I was able to trade in 2 Alpha 100's to ease some of the pain.

Peace of Mind!
January 12, 2026
At last, I can track my dogs without losing sight of them. I paired by 300i with the TT25 collars. I no longer lose GPS, feedback to the dogs is reliable, the maps are awesome and I couldn't be happier! Strongly recommend, especially with multiple dogs in large areas while they are running or hunting off leash. Incredible!

Finally Keeping Track
December 19, 2025
I used to use a beeper collar and it was good but honestly couldn't hear it when my dog was too far away. I love how I can finally see where my GSP is at all times in particular in deep cover. Love the quality and function of the Garmin. Gun Dog Supply always has what I need to keep my dog going strong in the field .

The best out there, but still not good
December 18, 2025
This collar and hand held combo is hands down the best on the market, thus 3 stars, but dang is it still exasperating to use.The handheld has a user interface that resembles a Garmin handheld GPS from the early 2000s. It's simply awful. Not intuitive, it was clearly designed by engineers and not field tested by anyone. It is not easy to set up even basic functions. It is clear Garmin took their InReach/Montana system and reverse-engineered a quasi-dog training system into it, rather than starting with a dog trainer in mind to design the thing. If you're buying this to be an alternate communication pathway while you're hiking the AT or in the High Sierras, you'll be pleased; you can also track some dogs sometimes. Woohoo! If you're buying to train dogs, you'll be frustrated. The phone app has a great deal of promise, but you can't do anything from the app (set up geofence, send corrections to the dog, etc.) and most insanely, the handheld can only link to one phone at a time. This entire system would be significantly helped by moving to the phone app as the primary interface, and leaving the handheld for minimal/occasional use as the repeater.

Hunted multiple dogs on Alpha 100 for ten years- great product - easy to use and reliable- thought 300 would be a nice upgrade- big mistake- anything but easy to use and as noted by other purchasers who reported searching the internet for videos to figure out how to use this monstrosity Garmin's manual is wholly inadequate- the bigger brighter screen is nice and I suppose some folks relish the challenge of mastering this monster but I'd rather just hunt so I continue to use the 100 while I figure out the 300

Skeptic to Believer

I enjoy upland hunting as a way to escape technology (I work at a computer all day) and was hesitant to upgrade to the Garmin ALPHA 300i as I didn't want to spend my time outdoors looking at a screen all the time. After several hunts with it, I'm glad I bought this product. It's smart and easy to use and I can choose how much I want to engage with the data and don't let it interfere with enjoing my dog and the hunt.

Poor documentation for new user
October 24, 2025
I think the collar will work well for tracking, but the set up instructions are not clear. Biggest problem was linking the system to my wifi. To access wifi, must enter password. My wifi password included the special character "^". Garmin's limited character set doesn't include ^. To use the wifi feature, I had to change my router password. Big mistake! Then I had to change the password settings on my phone, computers and garage door opener. Took hours.

I bought this collar to use on my English Springer Spaniel to keep track her in heavy cover. That way I can see her distance from me before she flushes a rooster that's out range. Enjoy the many features of this unit, the tracking of the hunt, the map features & where I parked the truck showing directions & distance.

I finally got a bird dog that is constantly moving. To keep track of him in thick cover, I had to resort to a Garmin Alpha 300i and a TT25 combo to use on him.I'm still learning the system, but I think it will do the job for me?Thanks, Steve and team!

Great unit
January 11, 2025
I've owned all three versions of the Alpha trainer tracker. I'm usually hunting alone and often in new areas. For me, the biggest improvement in the 300i is the screen both in clarity and the ability to use it while wearing gloves. The handheld battery life is much greater than the 200i. The USB charging port is much more robust than the older style. The unit connects faster and updates faster to my Garmin Fenix watch.

Well worth the investment. This product is easy to use and has so much more available that we may never use ( just like our phones). Our dog is a runner and the peace of mind that comes with having this is priceless.Easy access buttons. Collar fit well. I can see why hunters want this for their dogs.

Alpha 300 is a huge jump in technology and performance over Alpha 100!
October 28, 2024
My Alpha 100 two collar system was beginning to suffer from wear after 11 years so rather than refurbishing at the Collar Clinic I decided to upgrade t the Alpha 300. Wow, enormous increase in battery life, enormous in creast in range. I could never get a satellit connection from my Florida Romm with the Alpha 100 but can with the 300. Which means I don't have to go outside to handle my dog in rain, sleet, and snow. The unit can become too hot to charge if left on a table in the sun, so keep it in a covered area of your hunting jacket even when storing. Still working with the location indicator, which seems a bit off, but that's more of my learning how to set it up. Pheasand season begins in Ohio next week so we'll see how it handles in different elevations and terraine.
