Additional Uses
Although the Garmin Alpha was originally designed for hunting dogs, many of our non-hunting customers have found that the Alpha is perfect for spending time outdoors with their dogs and allowing them to run off-leash. Whether hiking, camping, biking, or horseback riding, the Garmin Alpha gives your dogs more freedom while letting you keep a close eye on them and find them if they get lost. Since the Garmin Alpha is also a full-featured GPS, it will help keep you from getting lost as well!
Garmin ALPHA 300 + TT25 Combo Batteries
Li-ion batteries in both handheld and collar
Less than 6-hour charge time
Handheld and collar batteries both user-replaceable
Snap-on charging clip for no exposed charging jacks
Handheld Battery Runtime: ~55 hours
Collar Battery Runtimes:
~68 hours with Dynamic Tracking
~25-84 hours with fixed update rates (depending on update interval)
Stimulation from the Garmin ALPHA 300 + TT25 Combo
18 levels of continuous STIM
18 levels of momentary STIM
Non-stimulating vibration and tone options
Choose from two stimulation configurations:
Traditional STIM -- 6 levels with each level having a low, medium, and high for a total of 18 levels, replicating the "classic" Tri-Tronics stimulation setup
Linear STIM -- 18 levels that exactly match the low, medium, and high levels used in Garmin / Tri-tronics PRO series collars for those who prefer a slightly faster way to raise and lower levels
Garmin ALPHA 300 + TT25 Combo Range
The Garmin Alpha handheld and collar have a "line of sight" range of up to 9 miles.
The Alpha handheld and dog GPS collar communicate using a VHF radio signal. To get the maximum range out of the system there needs to be nothing obstructing this signal.
Realistically, this won't happen in most places we spend time with our dogs, so the actual usable range will be MUCH less than 9 miles depending on hunting/training conditions, weather, terrain, presence of cover, etc.
Garmin Alpha GPS Maps
Includes free Garmin TopoActive map and downloadable satellite imagery with no annual subscription required
Supports optional map data including Garmin's Outdoor Maps+ subscription service, TOPO U.S. 24K, autorouting with City Navigator, and Garmin Custom Maps
The new Garmin Alpha 300 and Alpha 300i handhelds are the exact same unit except the 300i has inReach capability.
These new GPS dog-tracking handhelds are very similar in look and feel to the Alpha 200 models. It's the same case, size, and setup, but the 300 and 300i have new features to make them more user-friendly than the 200.
The Alpha 300 series have a better battery life, a better screen, and a better charging system.
The 300 series also has the ability to use WiFi to update both the handheld and collars, and the new menu interface is easier to use.
The Alpha 300 and 300i can track and train up to 20 dogs. The fastest fixed update rate is 2.5 seconds, but when using the new dynamic tracking, it'll automatically adjust the update rate based on your dog's activity. Less movement = longer update rate.
The Alpha 300 and 300i offer multiple map options including TOPO maps, downloadable satellite imagery, HuntView pre-programmed micro-SD cards, and Garmin Outdoor Maps+ (available by subscription).
They have 18 levels of continuous and momentary stimulation plus non-stimulating vibration and tone options. You can create custom setups for each dog, letting you set different stimulation levels based on each of your dog's needs.
New Features on the Alpha 300:
50-55 hours of run time on one full charge
USB-C charging port
Update handheld and collars using WiFi
Improved menu interface
Clearer, more detailed screen
Compatible with Garmin Outdoor Maps+ subscription service, which includes HuntView maps
Channel View allows you to see what collars are being used and what channel they're on
As far as collars go, we have two new tracking collars: the T20 and TT25. The T20 is a tracking-only collar, and the TT25 is a tracking and training collar.
New TT25 and T20 Collar Features:
Dynamic Tracking -- stretches battery life, giving up to 68 hours per charge
Multi-colored running lights with 7 color options
Replaceable flex band
Status indicator light changes to one of 4 colors depending on collar status
An orange-topped GPS antenna identifies the T20 collar as tracking only.
These collars are one size fits most -- it's not too big for your small dog, and not too small for your big dog.
The collars can now be updated using WiFi. When you plug them in to charge, they'll automatically check for updates and install them as needed using your WiFi network.
I haven't upgraded my collars for at least 12 years, so when it was decided to upgrade to the 300I had everything I needed. The battery longevity is outstanding, lasts several days without recharging. The In Reach feature makes all the difference in the world, I'm able to hunt alone without the fear of losing cell service. The location of my dogs and stimulation with the simple user friendly handheld is spectacular. I sure wish I would of bought it sooner.
Pros
Battery Life
User friendly handheld
Size of Collar
Tone, vibrate, light, stimulation, location all in one spot
Handheld durable, screen is bright

I use the 300 with my two GSPs. Works perfectly so far for training and tracking. Durable, nice weight when hooked to you, great battery life, quick connect time with satellites and TT25 collars. Would buy again if ever needed another and have suggested to others that have now changed over to the Garman 300.
Pros
Quick access time. Great battery life. Well made.
Cons
None.

Great system but be aware….
July 23, 2023
I have lost dogs for many days (without usage of a gps collar) and am very aware and appreciative of the longer battery life of this new collar to allow for long search times if needed. This system has a mode called 'sleep mode' that allows you to put the collar to 'sleep' and consume far less battery power. It is meant to be used when you are not actively tracking your dog. When you want to begin tracking your dog again you enter the 'awake mode'. The issue that I confirmed with GARMIN helpline is that you must be in RF antenna sight line to wake the collar up. It is not commanded to wake via GPS. If you hunt in hilly country as I do it is likely that the dog will be out of RF range and therefore the collar will be stuck in sleep mode and useless to track your dog. The GARMIN product manual does not make it clear whether this mode is commanded via RF or GPS antenna. If it were via GPS then there would be very little limitation putting the collar into awake mode. As it stands I will not be using 'sleep/wake' mode. I want others to know this limitation as well.
Pros
This system is working very well
Cons
Sleep/Wake mode limitations as described in my comments

At last, I can track my dogs without losing sight of them. I paired by 300i with the TT25 collars. I no longer lose GPS, feedback to the dogs is reliable, the maps are awesome and I couldn't be happier! Strongly recommend, especially with multiple dogs in large areas while they are running or hunting off leash. Incredible!
Pros
Reliability
Trackability
Long battery life
Multiple map options - some free, some with membership
Videos are VERY helpful for set up and understanding the apps and what they do
Cons

I used to use a beeper collar and it was good but honestly couldn't hear it when my dog was too far away. I love how I can finally see where my GSP is at all times in particular in deep cover. Love the quality and function of the Garmin. Gun Dog Supply always has what I need to keep my dog going strong in the field .

The best out there, but still not good
December 18, 2025
This collar and hand held combo is hands down the best on the market, thus 3 stars, but dang is it still exasperating to use.The handheld has a user interface that resembles a Garmin handheld GPS from the early 2000s. It's simply awful. Not intuitive, it was clearly designed by engineers and not field tested by anyone. It is not easy to set up even basic functions. It is clear Garmin took their InReach/Montana system and reverse-engineered a quasi-dog training system into it, rather than starting with a dog trainer in mind to design the thing. If you're buying this to be an alternate communication pathway while you're hiking the AT or in the High Sierras, you'll be pleased; you can also track some dogs sometimes. Woohoo! If you're buying to train dogs, you'll be frustrated. The phone app has a great deal of promise, but you can't do anything from the app (set up geofence, send corrections to the dog, etc.) and most insanely, the handheld can only link to one phone at a time. This entire system would be significantly helped by moving to the phone app as the primary interface, and leaving the handheld for minimal/occasional use as the repeater.
Pros
--Wildly reliable
--Accurate location information
--solid construction, collars, etc.
--outstanding battery life, both handheld and collars
--Map display and manipulating track data in the phone app is one of the lone highlights of the user interface.
--Refresh rate is fantastic (to the handheld...NOT the phone app)
Cons
--User interface on handheld is beyond awful. Clunky, outdated, designed by engineers and not user-tested. It feels like awful military GPS technology that has taken 20 years to get through procurement channels and is already outdated when received by the operating forces (yep, that's some scar tissue).
--Handheld can only link to one phone, so only one member of a household can track the dogs without the handheld.
--Whip antennas are awkward and prone to chewing from other dogs; they are, however, how the system is able to refresh so quickly and accurately.
--Phone app display does not display as accurately or update as quickly as the handheld, so can provide a false sense of where the animals are.
--Establishing alerts, geofences, etc., can apparently only be done on the handheld, and map data and selecting maps are not good or easy on the handheld.
--Updating software/firmware is an exercise in frustration. Not at all intuitive, and screen selections don't work sometimes, etc. Poorly conceived, poorly implemented. Gross.

Hunted multiple dogs on Alpha 100 for ten years- great product - easy to use and reliable- thought 300 would be a nice upgrade- big mistake- anything but easy to use and as noted by other purchasers who reported searching the internet for videos to figure out how to use this monstrosity Garmin's manual is wholly inadequate- the bigger brighter screen is nice and I suppose some folks relish the challenge of mastering this monster but I'd rather just hunt so I continue to use the 100 while I figure out the 300

Skeptic to Believer
November 6, 2025
I enjoy upland hunting as a way to escape technology (I work at a computer all day) and was hesitant to upgrade to the Garmin ALPHA 300i as I didn't want to spend my time outdoors looking at a screen all the time. After several hunts with it, I'm glad I bought this product. It's smart and easy to use and I can choose how much I want to engage with the data and don't let it interfere with enjoing my dog and the hunt.
Pros
The biggest pro for me is I know where my do is at all time when hunting switch grass and set aside acres. He's never far away but I feel it makes us a better hunting duo.
I'm personally not a fan of beeper collars, and love that the Garmin beeps on my controller when my dog goes on point and not beeping on him.
I can choose how much to engage with the tech and data.
Bravo Garmin and thank you Gun Dog Supply for all the videos you created that convinced me to buy.
Cons
I feel like I'm only using 1/8 of what this device is capable of. I will learn more and use more of the features as we go.

Poor documentation for new user
October 24, 2025
I think the collar will work well for tracking, but the set up instructions are not clear. Biggest problem was linking the system to my wifi. To access wifi, must enter password. My wifi password included the special character "^". Garmin's limited character set doesn't include ^. To use the wifi feature, I had to change my router password. Big mistake! Then I had to change the password settings on my phone, computers and garage door opener. Took hours.
Pros
Compact
clear screen
Cons
Not sure how touch screen will work in 10 below temps while wearing gloves.
Wifi connection limited by lack of special characters in character set. If your router password has a missing special character, you're screwed.

September 19, 2025
Straight forward to set up and use. Had it running in no time.
Pros
Use is intuitive. Easy to see graphics. Quick to ascertain bearing and direction of dog.
Cons
Little puzzled as to what to do with all the extra strap. Molly initially didn't like the antenna sticking out in front of her. Later figured out how to wrap it around better with the collar clips.
Not a con but a suggestion: The hand-held unit is a bit large. Would like a "band" or sleeve to attach around forearm to hold in place and so its quick and easy to access/view without having to dig around in pockets. Kinda like quarterbacks have for viewing their plays.

Great unit
January 11, 2025
I've owned all three versions of the Alpha trainer tracker. I'm usually hunting alone and often in new areas. For me, the biggest improvement in the 300i is the screen both in clarity and the ability to use it while wearing gloves. The handheld battery life is much greater than the 200i. The USB charging port is much more robust than the older style. The unit connects faster and updates faster to my Garmin Fenix watch.

Alpha 300 is a huge jump in technology and performance over Alpha 100!
October 28, 2024
My Alpha 100 two collar system was beginning to suffer from wear after 11 years so rather than refurbishing at the Collar Clinic I decided to upgrade t the Alpha 300. Wow, enormous increase in battery life, enormous in creast in range. I could never get a satellit connection from my Florida Romm with the Alpha 100 but can with the 300. Which means I don't have to go outside to handle my dog in rain, sleet, and snow. The unit can become too hot to charge if left on a table in the sun, so keep it in a covered area of your hunting jacket even when storing. Still working with the location indicator, which seems a bit off, but that's more of my learning how to set it up. Pheasand season begins in Ohio next week so we'll see how it handles in different elevations and terraine.
Pros
Seeks and connects with Satellite from indoors, Range, battery life.
Cons
Gets too hot to charge if left in the sun.

Nice generational upgrade to training and tracking
September 6, 2024
Bought the 300i as the successor to my 200i.
Pros
Battery life is greater than previous generations, as is the display. Uses the same rechargeable battery as the 200i, which means I can continue to use the spare battery I bought last year.
Collar has some really nice upgrades in terms of serviceability and battery life.
Cons
Handheld and collar charging adapters are now designed for USB C cabling. While that

I have been using this unit for a short time still learning it seems but here goes,I like the single collar system, I had two collars before.I like the directional indicator, it is much more accurate than the previous modelI like the larger screenI like the charge life on both hand held and collarThe only dislike is the distance to dog info is often very off, this is not a big problem so far, when I approach the dog that is on point it will often say he is lets say 60 yards away When he is three or four yards away, I have paused long enough that the unit had time to update more that once, then the situation with the dog takes up my interest again.
Pros
Single collar is a good thing
Direction indicator is much more accurate than previous unit
I like the larger screen
I like the charge life in the hand held and collar
Cons
The only thing that is a dislike is the distance reported on the screen, it seems to be in error sometimes, I notice it most when I walk up to my dog that is on point the hand held will say that my dog is much further away than he really is.

Enjoying our new handheld unit. We have had our other one for over 8 years. This one's screen is much easier to read and navigate.
