Dogs don't dive, but mine loves it when I come home.

I'm a scuba diver and went with GunDog because of an earlier experience that went well. This device is ideal for serious outdoor safety. There are better units for casual hiking and even communication. What this device brings is size. It's miniature, tiny... smaller than a pager. It has full two-way communication abilities, like a SAT phone, just no voice. Texts, and a 24/7 two-way SOS button that puts you in direct contact with a rescue representative in case of emergency. It's Garmin. There is also an additional waterproof case (rated to 100m) that makes it ideal for divers. It does require a satellite subscription, mine cost about $150/year. Call in your own rescue, anywhere in the world as long as you can see the sky. There is nothing that compares at 5 times the price. Highly recommend if your adventures are on the edge.

Chukar hunting in Idaho's high desert leads to getting out in some pretty big, remote places and traversing some occasionally challenging terrain. The InReach Mini offers one the ability to freely check out remote places with a little bit of assurance that if things go from good to bad, at least the family will know where to find the dog. Doesn't get much better than that!
