One hour of BASIC OBEDIENCE training
from Pro Trainer Robin MacFarlane.
I got a final version of the SD 425 right around the beginning of hunting season in 2012. While I had been looking forward to this collar coming out, it really was not something that I planned to use for myself and I figured after a short few tests I would be done with it. I am still using it several months later and it is now one of my favorite collars. It's in my truck right now and I use it almost every day. I have used it on Roxy for every duck hunt this year and I expect to keep using it around the house for some time.
The 425 is the replacement for the extremely popular SD 400. This version fixes several things that the 400 was missing and brings it in line with the new generation SportDOG collars.
The new features of the 425 include:
Rapid 2 hour charge
Mode selection collar choices for sensitive and regular dogs
Tone and Vibration options
Multi dog modes that include Tone or Vibration on the dial, allowing you to use tone or vibration when in a two or three dog set up
The 425 is a great collar for obedience work, retrievers and flushers. It's going to quickly become one of our best sellers in its category.
While the 400 has been our best selling collar under $200 for the last 8 or 9 years, I never really found a use for it. The 425 has changed that for me. It is an awesome system for folks that don't need a lot of range but want a full featured system for working close to medium range dogs.
Family pet. Our two young Labs (11 and 9 months) obeyed, but inconsistently. At times they would just ignore voice command. After just one day of re-training with the 425 2 Dog system, they both are under control consistently with just TONE. Our only regret is we didn't start this 3 months ago and avoided a lot of frustration. Worth every penny.

Family pet. Confused at first about setup. Got great support from company. Collars work wonderfully. My Schnoodle had gotten deaf, and with the collar he comes running eagerly to me. I love it. Love the lights that tell me if on or off, love being able to feel the vibration myself and be sure collars are working.

Lab,Brittany. Hunts. Family pet. Arrived as promised and was exactly what we needed. The Lab loves to just roam off, so the collar was a great deterrent to his walk-about tendencies. The Brittany is still young and just loves to run. She could be out of sight in mere seconds, so the collar works for her too. Thanks, Steve for a great product

"I also like that in each generation the receiver seems to get a little smaller and lighter."
By: Ann B. From MA
mongrel. Family pet. As Steve said in his review, this collar system addresses the problems of the previous model, the 400. I had a 400 system that I use on two dogs that I bought in 2011 and used continuously until the batteries started to give out. I was happy with it except for the inability to use the vibe or tone function when set up for two dogs. Now that I have that option I am very happy.
I have only had this a short time so I can't speak to its durability, but the 400 system went through some pretty awful stuff with zero problems so I am hoping for the same from the 425. I also like that in each generation the receiver seems to get a little smaller and lighter.

Lab mixes. Family pet. Our family was very disappointed and worried to see that the new addition to the family and our existing dog seemed not to be getting along. Our trainer recommended the product. At first, I was very hesitant, the use of the product sounded cruel and negative to me. As I spoke to my trainer, tried it on my own arm and he demonstrated the proper way of using the collars, we purchased our own set. After using the collars 2 days, the results were clear. The dogs both learned what was appropriate and inappropriate behavior and our problems were solved. Great product.....problem solved!!!!! Our family is very happy!

Family pet. The first unit I received unfortunately had a problem, and although it charged, it did not work, but the replacement works just fine. Steve was very pleasant and easy to work with.
I have a former military working dog (Belgian Malinois) that we recently adopted. She is very energetic and goal oriented. She does not like getting NO for an answer if she want to do something or go someplace. Since I have been using the collar, she is much better at coming when she is called or stopping undesirable behavior, such as chasing our cats and peacocks. I do not have to use it very much now, but when I do, it is VERY effective. I definitely recommend this product.

Family pet. I can't comment because I haven't put them on my dogs yet. After watching your training video it was obvious I had jumped the gun in buying the trainers. My dogs still needed some basic training. Well, I am now getting them some training, and we are working on leash walking and other commands. My plan is to switch to the trainers after they have a good understanding of what "heel" means! I also bought the no-bark collars. It's worked well with one of them, but the other has had a rough time. He scratches it so much that he has scratch off almost all of hair on his neck. He will still stop barking after a few times, but I'm not convinced this was the right way to go with him -- although I don't know any other way.

I can now silently get the dogs to return to me while I am using my predator call. The properties I hunt are free range for cattle and horses and the dogs used to bark at and chase both. One outing with the collars cured the problem. The collars work excellent.

Family pet. Beagles are notorious for when their noses hit the ground their ears shut down. These collars are wonderful. We normally can use vibrate, and once and a while have to use level 1 or 2. This also enables us to use a boat whistle to begin with, which never used to work. So whistle first, then vibrate, and last resort level 1 or 2. Pretty awesome.

Before training, dogs would bolt into the woods/street and not come back when called. Both dogs are 50lbs. Product arrived promptly in good condition with easy enough instructions, Informational DVD and manuals helpful and knowledgeable. Make sure you read the booklets to get familiar with the devices, and watch the DVD before starting. Dogs are very responsive and get excited when they see their collars. Family pet. A little difficult to set up for two dogs. Works well and holds a charge. The on light is convenient, and the collar has held up well in the water so far. The downsides for me are that you must choose between vibrate OR tone on setup, and cannot change without going through the whole setup process. Also, you must have both dogs stimulated the same unless you can quickly turn the dial in between choosing one collar over the other. One of my dogs is sensitive to vibrate while the other is not, so they must either get a low level stim or only one will really be affected.

Family pet. I like this trainer for one dog. The remote is hand friendly and easy to use. I bought an additional collar to use as a multi dog control, but the stimulation is limited and there is no beeping option for dual dog, not enough buttons. In dual dog option one of my dogs was mildly amused when the stimulation was given for correction. I have each dog on their own singular trainer, and I am happy with the performance. Your options for correction is greater in singular use, either a beep warming or stimulation, as well as your choice of stimulation intensity. This is a great product for what I am using it for.

Family pet. These collars are definitely a lot different than the older models. The Sportdog collars I had before were great, but seems like the collar and controller stopped talking to each other (but not before I had them put through salt water every weekend for like a year). Not sure what happened, but I decided to stay with Sportdog and get the newer model. The new model feels lighter (almost cheap feeling), and the buttons to turn them on are on the inside where the dogs neck is, whereas the older models had the buttons on the side. That being said, it's nice to be able to control both dogs on a single remote AND still have the tone/vibrate function. The only real difference I've really noticed performance-wise is the fact I have to turn the collar up pretty high to get a reaction (like 5 or higher, collar only goes up to 7) out of my staffie. On the old model I would go up to maybe 4; 5 would cause him to yelp. I've checked the collar tightness and made sure everything was in working order. That being said, the collars seem to be ok for I need.

Family pet. I purposely held off giving review until I had this product for a while. At first it worked well. Now that I have had it a little over a year I am starting to have trouble. The transmitter won't hold a charge. I have also received feedback from my Trainer that the jump in intensity is a bit much. I tested it on myself quite a few times. I don't feel stimulation at 1. I feel a tingle at 2. It sends a jolt at 3. Four and above is quite a jolt. I don't have much experience, so I am relying heavily on feedback from the military dog handler/Trainer I take lessons from. I am hoping I might be able to find a replacement transmitter that has a larger variety of incremental intensity settings and will last longer than a year.
