#1 BEST-SELLER: The "Wonder Lead" by Delmar SmithLength: approx. 7 1/2' | Diameter: 5/16" The Wonder Lead is the simplest, fastest way to teach a dog to heel. Using the included illustrated instructions, you can encourage boldness in a shy dog or decrease boldness in a bold dog. Great for pointing breeds, retrievers, show, obedience, or family dogs. Made of durable, flexible plastic. (Charles Jurney calls the Wonder Lead an "EZ Lead" in his book, Finished Dog.) We recommend wearing gloves when using the Wonder Lead. Over time, the rubber stopper will turn the rope black as it rubs against it. This is normal. Using the included "Red Head" with your Wonder Lead:The rubber stopper on the Delmar Smith Wonder Lead will wear out over time. When this happens, the stopper will not allow you to set the distance that the lead will open up. To keep the stopper functional, we have included a plastic bushing called a "Red Head."Installation: Simply place the Read Head onto the lead and slip the stopper over it, where the flange of the Red Head is flush with one side of the stopper (see photos). Remove the small "flag" tab on the Red Head to prevent snagging on the Wonder Lead. Note: You do not necessarily have to wait for the stopper to wear down to utilize the Red Head. Upon receiving the Wonder Lead you can slide the stopper up and down on the lead enough to create space for it to fit over the Red Head. Using the Wonder Lead:![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Steve Says: Delmar Smith Wonder Lead![]() Steve with Mr. Delmar in Kansas City, MO. Transcript from Steve's Video: This is the Delmar Smith Wonder Lead. It's the best money you are ever going to spend for training a dog. It's made out of what's called piggin' string, which is a cowboy thing. It's a real stiff rope. It's used to teach a dog mainly to heel. The idea behind it is that you've got this rubber stopper, and that when the dog is where he's supposed to be it's going to loosen up on him. It gives a really fast response. When you are trying to teach your dog heeling and he moves out too far or backs up too much, it responds really quickly. You don't have to have the right reaction time. It's going to do the work for you. Just one of the simplest ways to teach a dog to heel. I've been using them for about 10 years now. When I first heard about them I clearly remember saying, "I don't know if that's the right thing for me. Not really sure." But I saw Rick use one once at one of his seminars. And it was just sort of like a light turned on for me. ![]() Steve training with the WONDER LEAD. Just a really neat device. It's a major part of Rick and Ronnie's Silent Command System. It's a key part to it. If you are using that system to train your dog, I highly recommend that you get a Wonder Lead. We include what they call these little red tops. What's eventually going to happen is that over time this little stopper is going to wear down. So we include this. It's a little device that you slide up into here once it gets worn down. That's going to increase the life of it. This is just something we throw in for folks. I just absolutely love my Wonder Leads. I carry them with me wherever I go. It takes the place of a leash for me. One thing I like to point out is that because it is stiff, I typically like to be wearing gloves when I'm using it. You can use it without gloves, but you are going to regret it at a certain point. It's one of those things that when I'm working a dog with it, gloves are a major factor. But the Delmar Smith Wonder Lead is a neat tool. Highly recommend it. We use them in our training and I recommend that you try it out in yours. Steve Snell

Great training tool

This lead really gets my pup's attention. After using several times, she responds quickly to the sound it makes when pulled, even before pressure is applied. One suggestion: how about just a collar of the same material so a normal lead can be used? The stiffness of the material as a full lead is a bit cumbersome.

Luke would never go up or down the ramp being used to get in and out of the truck so after about ten minutes he now walk up and down and will stand still on the middle with no problem thanks to wonder lead and it is a wonder lead. He also now heals great and a joy to go walking with him

Better Than I Expected

This is an amazing product. Prior to having it I was getting pulled along by my Curly Coated Retriever whenever he was on-leash. The Wonder Lead got his attention immediately and without having to keep him under tension. A quick, short snap with the lead and he was right back to heel. I'd highly recommend it to anyone working on heeling their dog or getting pulled on while walking their dog on a leash.

Immediate Attention!

I was skeptical when my wife showed me our new training leash. But after the second time I put it on our 6 month old golden retriever, I could tell there was something special going on with this. Every time we get the leash out he sits and anticipates the leash going on and is immediately in training mode. This lead has truly made healing and sit/stay commands easy and fun to train.

I have trained dogs for 40 years and never used this lead for training to heel. Much easier to control than the traditional choke collar or pinch collar. Wish I bought one years ago. Wear gloves if you have office hands. :-)

Our trainer recommended this lead . It has helped greatly in management of my headstrong Britany. I have been trained to use it with her and now we have great walks and are learning more every session. Year and a half old alpha had me buffaloed. Now we are partners.

Glorified slip lead
February 24, 2025
This is a product of the horse world. Made out of lariat material for roping cows and training horses. Never breaks. Very stiff. Good idea to wear gloves. If one is looking for a slip lead then Mendota slip leads work just as well if not better.

The lead is nice and well made and works great. The rubber stopper should just be removed as it doesn't last but a week or two, the red stopper that is intended to help the rubber stop last longer is great intent but will also not last a week or two if your working a puppy. A couples more round leather tabs like what is on the end would be nice so when they get chewed off you could just slide one down and be ready to go. Otherwise you can still use them without it.

Suggested by my dog's trainer
August 20, 2024
Interesting lead that was suggested (and used by) my dog's trainer. The slip collar releases reliably so that I can "check correct" my pup's behavior on walks and training sessions. I always wear gloves of some sort to protect my hands and give me a better grip. I like that it maintains its "curl" which allows me to hold the "extra" length while my dog is at heel. A bit tricky keeping the collar section high on my pup's head.I haven't tried the "over the ear" position as I'm afraid he'd slip out of the collar. But I will try it in the house today and see how it goes. Not easy to keep the slip/collar area high on my pup's head. It keeps sliding to an "around the neck" position and I have to re-adjust during walks. However, that's true of any collar that I've tried. My dog likes to lead me - and that's what we're working on.

This slip lead works as advertised. It releases tension far better than any of the other 4 slip leads I have tried. It also stays in position behind the dog's ears better than the other leads.

Delmar Smith Wonder Lead - not for small dogs
March 15, 2024
I didn't realize the wonder leash was made out of stiff braided plastic rope. Tried it a few times and just gave up, will use a choke collar and an appropriate leash. Fine for larger dogs but not for small dogs. Maybe a vet leash is more appropriate for training small dogs.

Immediate feedback and easy to use. Eliminates pulling and almost self teaches the dog with the pressure. A must have tool!
