We live in very remote and hilly terrain and, on our alpha 100 system, normally don't have very long range communications with our dogs. One day two dogs escaped and we lost communication with them after about 1/2 mile. About 5 hours later we were driving around looking for them with two Alpha units; one with the regular antenna and one with the extended range antenna. About 5 miles away, the unit with the extended range antenna detected them first and we recovered them. A very worthwhile investment.

The only reason I did not give this a top rating is my limited opportunity to test it in the field. A simple distance check from my home showed clearly that I was getting at least a third, possibly more, distance coverage when this item was fully extended. That coverage was in heavy cover and from a moving vehicle so I'd expect more effective results in the field hunting.Far as it goes, the item is well made, installs quickly and is easy to manage. Like all extendable antenna's tho, it is obviously somewhat fragile and would not stand up to the casual handling that the rubber duck style does......but on the plus side, the more wire you have in the air the better you are usually going to hear...this item does provide that. I think it's a great value.
