Want a Standing Ovation? Teach Your Dog to "Take A Bow!"

by Robin MacFarlane

It is always beneficial to be teaching your dog something new.

Any time you see me working with my Duck Toller, Diva, you'll probably see me practicing a trick or two mixed into her work out. I just love teaching tricks and free style movements with my dogs or with my client's dogs.

I love tricks for a number of reasons.

1. It is always beneficial to be teaching your dog something new. Spending time together learning tricks is fun for you and the dog. Plus, mental challenges are as valuable as physical ones in terms of providing your dog an outlet for energy.

2. There are lots of tricks that involve movements that enhance coordination and muscle strength. Many are good for the mind AND the body!

3. Tricks make people smile. If for no other reason, brightening someone's day and making them chuckle is reason enough to spend some time learning a few new tricks.

So as you add to the repertoire of tricks your dog can perform, make sure you teach "take a bow" for your big finale piece!

Here's how to get started.
