"Catch me if you can!"

by Robin MacFarlane

Why it's important to be able to touch your dog's collar.

How frustrating is it when you go to take a hold of your dog and she darts just out of reach?

It is a common problem.

Lots of dogs learn early in life that if you get a hold of them unpleasant things will follow.

At least in the dog's mind the consequences are unpleasant.

Dogs learn that when we take a hold of them, it is time to go into a kennel, or they are going to get a bath, or we take them inside and the fun is over. Any number of things can become an unpleasant association when taking a hold of our dog's collar. Before we know it the dog learns to stay just out of reach with the old "catch me if you can" routine.

Our frustration grows as the game goes on, and we just might be a tempted to be even a bit more abrupt when we do get hold of Fido, which then reinforces their already negative opinion of being caught. It becomes a vicious cycle and the dog gets better and better at avoiding us as we get more and more irritated.

If you would like to break this cycle or better yet, never let it get started, let me show you a solution that teaches your dog it is a good thing to be caught. Practice this and it will make your dog much easier to catch.
